if you watched this game you could see the difference. our defense got cut up when Brunson was on the floor and even compared to his usual standard of being just “small guard bad” he was pretty awful. but Trae was another level holy crap. and once he’s taken out of the play by a screen or missed calls its literally over, he’ll never ever recover

He was actually really good on defense last night so my guess is he got tilted with the loss and with the contract situation I think his heads just gone
I’ve seen trae put in effort and play passable defense before, I know it’s possible. He’ll never be a good or even average defender, but if he’s communicating with his teammates, following the scheme, and putting in effort he can at least be okay-ish.
If he’s not gonna do any of that stuff, it’s ugly to watch. and if you combine that with a poor offensive game, he looks like he doesn’t belong in the NBA

He has all that but he left his effort in 2024 so he’s been shit at defense since then. It’s been so bad that the hawks sub will say he’s been worse than Trae and the crazy thing is there’s merit to it taking into account their builds & the effort they put in.

He’s not a guard, he’s a 6-8 forward, and he’s already the hawks franchise leader in triple doubles, calling him Trae 2.0 is pretty unfair. He needs to be way better on defense, but at least in 2024 he was good there. Jalen has 2-way potential where Trae could never realistically be that much better than he is now

I’m one of the few people who’s still generally a Trae believer but it’s probably time for him to leave
The Hawks are on their 5th straight year of being mid and he’s never going to be able to coexist defensively with Johnson so it’s probably best for both of them to move on and try something different
The Hawks have tried several coaches with Trae and several roster iterations. They’ve put all sorts of players around him and have genuinely tried hard to surround him with a good supporting cast that complements him. Some players haven’t panned out, but they haven’t been afraid to change anything around Trae. Despite it all, they have had just one good season with Trae and that was now 5 years ago. At this point, the only thing left to change is Trae himself.
I’m no Trae fan but this is somewhat of an exaggeration
Trae’s never been on an elite team. It’s obvious he needs to be the 2nd or 3rd best player next to a dominant defensive center or wing (think Wemby or Tatum) he’s been miscast as the best player on the team when he’s not that level of player
Now there’s no doubt he has massive flaws but we still haven’t seen him in an ideal situation

Trae has gotten a lot of mileage out of one playoff series 5 years ago. Since then, he has not been in the same zipcode of relevancy as the Knicks nor has he done anything against them.
In the moment it was a big deal but Haliburton totally eclipsed it.

Remember when Trae used to be an elite scorer? He was at 28-29 ppg a couple of years ago.
Idk if he is still dealing with an injury but his shot selection is horrid. I guess he use to make those crazy shots a few years back but if he isnt scoring he is a no show on the court. His assist numbers are still good but its not enough
Yeah, a couple of years ago, he was a scoring machine and would have a solid amount of 40 and 50 balls. He used to be one of my favorite players to watch. He just doesn’t score like that anymore. His three-point shooting has regressed, and he doesn’t hit those insane deep threes as often. Every time he drives it looks like a struggle, and he bricks. Feel like it’s just a lot of 4⁄15 and 3⁄12 nights for him nowadays. He looked terrible in this game.
The problem is not his 3. He’s always been a shaky shooter. It’s the drives. Pretty sure he’s never really recovered from the injury. He had way better acceleration the years back. Also he used to have prime Capela who complemented him so well on offense. The Hawks have been lacking that character for years.
