They wouldn’t even need to give up any young players in a deal. The Tobias contract is the perfect thing to offload and go after someone like JJJ, Trey Murphy, or Herb Jones. It’s crazy to me that anyone would put Thompson or Duren in trade rumors.

Detroit is not a championship contending team unless they add a top 20 player which isnt likely without dumping way too much young talent, just isnt worth it. This is the right approach see how the next year or two play out and accumulate assets.

The east is wide open with all the injuries. Now is the time to go for it, might not get a better opportunity

MPJ or Lauri would be perfect fits for them. But I understand not wanting to rush their timeline

I could see them going either way, stay the course or make win now move. The East will never be easier to get through than this year in the playoffs.

No need for them to do anything drastic. See what you have and reassess in the offseason. Don’t need to get attached to this unit being “the team”, but see what they are first.

Detroit, like the Spurs, are not winning the title this year. It is just unheard of for a young team to be successful in their first playoff run. Let them make the playoffs, hopefully win a series or two. But they will lose to a more experienced team at some point - and they will learn from that both as individuals and as an organisation to see what holds up, what they can improve, and what they might need to chase for an outside answer. No need to waste all your trade assets before that point and ruin your chance to make changes in future (unless you can get someone really cheap).

Corey Kispert is the right level of risk/reward imo; cheap but potentially pretty impactful.

Celtics will have Tatum back next year and make moves to fix their center rotation. Pacers will have Haliburton back, a high lottery pick and fix their center rotation too. Cavs are going to retool, 76ers and Hornets will have their star rookies progress even further. Magic will have their big 3 together for another year. Raptors will also likely make a move to fix their problems. Heat or Knicks could end up with Giannis.

This is the most open the East might be for years, with the leaders of the 2 previous conference winners out for the year. Pistons should strike while the iron is hot and go all in when they can and stake their claim on the East. This “we’ll wait and see what we have” mindset in response to a good regular season instead of making a needed move is what had Rockets get upset as a 2 seed last year and then make a move to fix what their glaringly obvious problem was - a reliable playoffs scorer and a first option - a year later, and by then the only true point guard in the rotation is out for the season.

Duren has had an awesome regular season but with him as their 2nd option I wouldn’t be shocked to see them get bounced in the first round as a 2 seed if Knicks catch up and take 1st. Cavs, Magic, 76ers would all fancy themselves beating Pistons as constructed imo.

Just because they’re 24-6 that doesn’t mean they have the smartest organization
