Wemby is #1, everyone is super high on Harper and it’s likely he’s the #2 long term considering there are less shooting concerns and he projects as the long term point guard who will likely have the ball in his hands more than Castle, then Fox is better than both Harper and Castle right now and is more important near term.

In terms of importance Castle is probably #3 behind Wemby and Harper.

Everyone else is kind of dwarfed by Wemby though. He’s by far the most important part of the equation and ranking everyone else is realistically just splitting hairs

The vast majority of it is based off luck. 3 of your best players came from very good lottery luck (Wemby, Fox, Harper). Castle and the bench are good moves by the FO, but just those players leaves you as a borderline play-in team at best. It would be a solid start to a rebuild, but nothing amazing.

Getting lucky with Wemby and Harper on top of the rest of it takes you from a Wizards level rebuild (solid but not amazing) a to a potential Thunder level one. That’s a gigantic difference. Acting like lottery luck isn’t the driving force of the rebuild going this well is being disingenuous.

There’s KD, but he’s older so he’s not going to do it that often and he’s prone to turnovers when he does do that. KD fan here… but the answer is probably KD tbh… I’ve come to the conclusion that KD is a guy who understands basketball really well while not understanding basketball at all. He continues to seek out rosters that don’t work. His play in each season since he left the Warriors has still been All-NBA level but he has nothing to show for it. Certainly, the foot on the line thing vs the Bucks was really unfortunate as his legacy would be wildly different had they won that series and probably went on to beat the Suns. And beyond that, with the Nets you can genuinely blame injuries. But with the Suns? Even healthy they weren’t legitimate contenders. The Nuggets series in the playoffs both Book and KD averaged like 30 on 50/40/90 and they got smoked.

Edit: they lost in 6 to the Nuggets in 2023 and KD didn’t shoot well that series, but Book was unreal. I remembered that differently. I think I was partially mixing that up with 2024 vs the Wolves. Book averaged 27.5 on 49/35/95 and KD 26.8 on 55/42/82. And they got swept.

They were beating on a lot of pretty bad teams. while they’ve been beating good teams as well, losing to a team like the spurs isn’t that shocking.

Rockets are the biggest pretenders in the West. It’s sad because talent wise, they don’t even beat the Spurs and OKC because they never got a #1 overall pick when tanking. If Rockets were able to get Cade or Wemby, the franchise would be completely different. Now they’re stuck trying to figure out how they’ll play for 2nd place in the west.

I think on paper the rockets have one of the most talented teams in the league, with one glaring hole at PG. But the real problem imo is the complete lack of offensive coaching; Udoka runs a freestyle iso-heavy offense which just doesn’t work without a solid floor general. I think even without a PG this team could be successful but they need a much more inventive motion style offense, which Udoka has no idea how to implement.

The Houston Rockets have lost to the Western Conference’s 13th seed, 14th seed and 15th seed in the last week.
