[Highlight] Wemby with a fake and gets open for a 3, but decides to pass it to Keldon Johnson for an easy layup
I know you should never trust a young team in their first playoff rodeo, but…
Most young teams don’t have a 7 foot 5 alien on their team.
Honestly this is far from a one-man carry Wemby’s just the only one getting highlights posted lol
Spurs went like 9-3 when he missed time this isn’t the 2007 Cavs we’re talking about here
Yeah, Spurs have 8 guys averaging double digits so it’s not as difficult for them to make up points when one guy is struggling offensively from night to night.
Thats my favorite part about this team. Everybody eats and they’re so cohesive and flexible. We’re a problem this year, my guy
Luke Kornet has lowkey been our best player. Or at least most consistent. This team is deeper than a lot think
I’m so happy Kornet is killing it with y’all. Dude is a gem.
He has an unreal ability of being in the right place at the right time. Speaks of a high basketball IQ. I’m a Vanderbilt fan, so I’m stoked
He’s so great at getting loose ball fouls too man
i know book smarts and bball smarts aren’t often that correlated, but i think kornet got like a 32 act score or something nuts. the dude is legit smart as hell.
I miss Luke Vibes.
Likewise with Derrick White o7
Spurs have always been my western conference team so I’m thrilled we can help each other out like this.
As a Spurs fan that lives near Boston, very happy I my two favorite teams are bros
Y’all are grossss
My best friend is from Boston though so same
I’m pissed the Celtics let go of so many key pieces of their championship team, and I’m not even a fan of them lol
He was a meme on the Celtics but he really was one of our best players. Very few fans nowadays look at dry impact on the floor, it’s all about salaries and contracts and tradability and how the league thinks of them and what not.
Plenty games Mazzulla would take Kornet out in the final stretch because he’s slow or whatever, but in reality Kornet was the huge reason for us to stay in the game or get back into it or what not. Also many times he’d get in for Tatum or Brown and just score at the rim while vacuuming offensive rebounds
Yep. As someone who really watches games and plays, I knew he was going to be a great pickup for the Spurs
I am still a little bit salty about taking him out for KP in one of those Knicks games and watching our lead being melted in a quarter. One of the few things I am still critical towards Mazulla is him doing this two times in that series. I still believe the series could go very differently if he didn’t do that. (I don’t believe that would change the whole course of playoffs though, just that series.) Kornet’s on/off stats was unreal in some of the games in that series thanks to both his chemistry with Tatum and his replacement, KP, being fully negative.
Yup… Multiple sports do that and one of my teams is doing that right now. I hate it. If someone’s overpaid, it’s not the coach’s responsibility to deal with that
That game winning block last week sealed this for me. Luke is the goat
best player a stretch lol
He just seems to do all the right things. Nothing flashy or highlight worthy but just a guy you can trust
Sure, but come playoff time he will be the difference maker (if healthy).
The difference is the defensive presence he would bring. Without him they aren’t any different than any other team in the league defensively.
Yup, I think we’re easily the 2nd deepest team in the league. And this team discovered a whole lot about itself after Wemby went down, but also props to Wemby for coming back and playing within the flow they’ve had, he’s been egoless as our offense has shifted to be more egalitarian.
this is what makes me think its sustainable and there could be a run this year - they arent forcing anything
We need to give Coach Mitch props here too. He kept them motivated and gameplanned to put them in positions to succeed. I remember a ton of spurs fans pissed he got the job bc so many more experienced coaches were out there but i think its being shown they made the right choice
Oh absolutely. If you go through my comment history you’ll find I’ve given Mitch his flowers multiple times. He’s done a phenomenal job with this group.
Oh it’s not but his presence along around the rim drastically changes the game on both ends. Spurs are definitely cooking, Wemby adds that spice that takes it to a different level.
For pure information.
The 2007 cavs played 4 games without Lebron.
They blewout the other team 3 times and lots just 96-98 against Boston at the end of the season.
Too little sample size, but overall i’d say they were strong enough without him. At least against weaker teams. Can’t say against better opposition as they didn’t play without him.
That team is overly maligned by people who didn’t actually study them. Every game in the Finals was close and in fact it was James’ poor play at the end of a number of them that blew the opportunity to win.
07 celtics ended 24-58
the cavs were a great defensive team but lacked creation outside of Lebron, you just dropped back on defense and let him brick into a sweep
This is what I’m thinking is going to happen in the playoffs. The team is young enough they don’t know any better and are going to fight every.single.game.
Fox is not even activated, because he does not have to
That may be so but he makes such a massive difference, im going with the eye test on this one
Most teams also don’t play Party in the USA before games, a key part of our success (and Keldon’s idea)
The other day or was 1000 Miles by Vanessa Carlton.. Apparently KJ has varied taste in music.
I’m gonna need him to bust out the classics. Mr Saxobeat and Please Don’t Stop the Music next
Whatever he’s playing, it’s working!
All their guards are oversized too. Fox is the only normal sized guard. Harper is 6’5”.
Most of their guards are athletic and big enough to be small forwards.
An alien with high BBIQ and that is as mobile as a wing.
Great BBIQ in San Antonio with great BBQ
Yeah I believe in needing playoff experience but having a guy with genuine GOAT potential feels like you can circumvent the norms
Why are you talking about Wemby crouching?
Time to rename the team to San Antonio Alien & Spurs?
San Antonio has plenty of experience with rodeos
What if I told you we take a 3 week road trip every year because the rodeo is at our arena?
If the new arena is built, will they still do the Rodeo Road Trip?
Nope. One of the things I’m looking forward to when our new arena is built. Hopefully we get an All-Star game as well.
Oh no.
It’s kinda a fun tradition but it’s also a drag, I won’t be sorry to see it go
I will. Tim’s Spurs used it as prep for the playoffs. That’s when they solidify rotations and roles.
Same. I always felt like the Spurs season really started with the RRT
Not to mention the insane travelling we have already done to start the season.
The thing is their defense will almost never be a problem. Their biggest weakness is opponent 3 point percentage but that’s volatile and usually drops in the playoffs. The playoffs is when you need that consistent and reliable inside scoring. That’s going to be tough to come by against them for a while
Either way, young teams time and time again continues to not go all the way in their first years. In that playoff atmosphere, close game, it must be difficult to make shots you normally do. Could miss about a million 3s
Our guys are all stone cold in playoff atmosphere … except for Harrison Barnes. NBA cup semi and finals were brutal from him. Meanwhile rookie Harper and sophomore Castle are killers.
This was OKC in the bubble with CP3
this is the start of something coming but they’re probably going to win in 3 years
Young team but a good mix veterans in there.
I mean, they do have fox and this won’t be his first playoffs. I could see them being alright
The big thing for the Spurs right now is being able to consistently run these half court sets come April. Pace slows down a lot in the playoffs, and you won’t be able to so easily catch teams off guard by pushing the tempo. They’ve done well but have some places to improve on when attacking a fully set defense. Their half court defense on the other hand showed flashes of dominance here. I haven’t seen a team get as hyped for a shot-clock violation as I did yesterday in a while. Once February-March hits and teams are starting to gear up for the post-season the goal should definitely be to get more of these kind of reps on both ends. Playoff basketball is already a grind, so being able to acclimate quickly for a team without real experience is a massive boon.
We here for the wemby playmaking leap
This kills the League.
Or makes it more entertaining than ever
If somebody is dominating off of play making and team chemistry then it doesn’t matter who it is or what team they’re on, that shit is entertaining to watch.
I also love the spectacle of a one man force carrying a team to contention, but on a play by play level it gets very repetitive to watch.
nba is die
no
Very wisdom
Even going back to his rookie days Wemby has had the playmaking vision. Just his team could never connect and Wemby need to practice his 3’s. But now with the Spurs hot and every player doing well I guess he feels comfortable to start passing it around again.
It helps that we’re kicking out to these guys not polish Rodman
just realized Sochan fell completely out of the rotation, wasn’t even out there in garbage time
Yeah I’m a big Jeremy fan, but I think he gone. And I’m completely fine with it
Tank Commander Jeremy Sochan served honorably, and now it’s time for his honorable discharge.
Yeah, KO took his spot pretty much..worse at D but better at everything else
Yeah I always felt like he does his best to make the right play
Remember when Wemby was our best lob passer for like a year and a half lmao
I love it because it’s such a classic Spurs thing to do. You are open, but there is someone with a better shot than you, make the extra pass.
Honestly I imagine mental plays like this mean a lot more to you when you have infinite physical gifts. Wemby being such a student and living in an era where Jokic has fundamentally reworked the passing potential for big men, I wouldnt be surprised if he has some really cool playmaking gains in his career.
“I turned down a shot I could make with my eyes closed but that was to get one of my teammates a shot he could make in his sleep.”
This is super effective.
I just hope his body survives
Even when he jumped for the celebration, I kind of gasped for a fraction of a second. Any celebration should be a very slow and deliberate thumbs up with no contact
He does it all the time with Devin haha, they both land well no worries !
Oh I know… Its just like you want him to save every single movement he makes for when it “matters”. “No Wemby! Save that tiny hop and landing for a more important use!”
I want him to be the omni threat. Good to great at all skills.
Them boys own OKC
Okay-see ya later 👋
Wemby is OKC father
Them young boys
Makes me so happy
I believe, them boys are me
It’s blows my mind that the spurs ever went to black and grey when the pink and teal is the best unique color combo in professional sports.
They got mad hate for the colors in the early aughts, now the originality is appreciated more.
Yup, I remember when the SBC Center was being built and the team announced that they would be changing their logo. I want to say the newspaper had asked many folks around town what is something they would change about the logo. The common answer was “Get rid of the pink.” Granted many teams were dropping their 90s “fun logos” in favor of a more serious look at the time. By serious, they mostly meant start incorporating black or darker colors. The Sixers, Wizards, Jazz, Mets, Blue Jays, Bills to name a few started using darker colors. Not my favorite era in terms of sports logos/jerseys.
I reluctantly admit i used to hate those 90s colors. Now, i fucking love them
It’s about the context. Back then you are basically the Dixie cup pattern with those colors. Now it’s cool. Just like the logos being super 90s (pistons, nets) bubbly and overtly colorful. Aesthetically it was a 1999 bubble Ford focus and looked childish, since later on the children’s marketing en masse became very busy 3D bubbly and busy logos.
This is why they went to the bubbles in the first place: 70s and 80s had flat 2d classic logos that they were trying to move away from (culturally speaking).
The Tennessee Titans logo hasn’t really changed since 1999 and lemme tell ya, it’s obvious
This is a perfect explanation, my dude. Times were definitely different back then
Same with the Raptors old logo and purple. We were the “Barney team” for years.
Nostalgia and the rise of corporate minimalism has us craving those bright crazy retro color-ways.
We should have never abandoned the Fiesta scheme
Absolutely love these colors. Wish they would keep them as their regular. It’s just more fun.
Its originality. Everyone morphed to a more modern look but it all just feels so souless and the same. Its the same thing imo that happened to phones. Those used to be fun and come in all shapes and colors now we all have the same 6 in rectangle with different logos on the back
Yup. It’s like this gentrification/conformity push that has honestly affect so much of th sports world when teams redesign logos or jerseys. Zero fun and almost this sort of self-important smugness to how plain and generic it is. There’s just no fun in it. It’s part of the reason I wish we would rebrand to our Dunkstronaut logo full time. It has character, and I actually feel something when I see it.
I remember a few years back when they first did the alternative jerseys and courts for the first time, a bunch of people loved the Celtics jerseys, which were nearly identical to their regular jerseys, and people just kept saying they looked “clean.” I was like, it’s just a green jersey with white block letter font. That’s not clean that’s boring.
They’ve only really had black and grey jerseys
Oh I know, beyond jerseys, I just meant utilizing the pink and teal, whether on their court, logo etc
Oh agreed. I was shocked when I found out they never had that Spurs logo on jerseys. I could’ve sworn they did but Mandela effect in action.
The pink and teal was on the warm ups in the 90s so that may be part of the cause
Plus the 96 All Star unis. Probably the best All Star uniform they’ve ever done.
I genuinely love this court. At the very least make this the cup court instead of the monstrosities we get around the league
Black and silver, they are not like the rest black and white teams
Thunder aren’t sophisticated enough for these cats
the Wembanllama connection
Omg. We have another one!!!!!!!
Most duo names in NBA history
Quick, someone put wemby’s face in a llama’s body
Current llama, future GOAT
Ah yes, our 7’ 5” bench point guard/center hybrid passing it to Keldon Johnson in the paint, just your standard every day Spurs basketball.
Every night before I go to sleep, I pray for my family, my dog, and for Wemby’s health. And I’m not even a Spurs fan. Or a religious person.
Ethical Basketball.
Victor Immanuel Kant Wembanyama.
Damn ethical play right there, son
Wemby has always been a very good passer even as a rookie
Outstanding vision and creativity. His touch has always been the issue
Yea he’s just a little reckless at times but he’s young and its part of his game to be a little chaotic
Height’s always a cheatcode for vision, and he’s got it in spades. Plus he’s 7’6 with handles like a guard, never needing to look down or focus on the dribble
Those Spurs uniforms are gorgeous
Looks like the warriors record will be safe (and so will Bulls)
Safe from the Thunder maybe 😎
75-7 is still on the table!
Give up a good shot for a great shot. The Beautiful Game is back!
I thought the same thing. Great game the other day btw 🫡
My goat really hates the Thunder lmfao
Dude’s just unfair
and you gotta bite on the fake cause if you don’t it’s open gym for him
Bruh
Why did Wemby jump for the chest bump?
He wants his teammates to jump higher and higher and higher.
Reminds me of the quote he had when he said “I’ll pass up a shot I can make with my eyes closed to get it to my teammate for a shot he can make in his sleep”
Also - great Spurs jersey - as well as that aqua warmup shirt 🔥
The court itself. Design was definitely a beautiful reminiscence
I love to see this. His shot selection was one of his big areas for improvement last year and he just stayed so calm and went for the high % option.
Wemby and Keldon did the exact same thing to seal a win in Denver last year too.
This is the same dread I felt when Jokic started shooting half court threes.
Ethical hoops wins
Ethical basketball.
This feels like the 2014 spurs…and I hated it when they’re passing so much.
It’s like they have an open look but will do an extra pass.
You get mad when they pass but then it just results in a bucket so you turn happy.
Really makes you tense when it’s a close game.
Still, it looks so beautiful when they play like that, especially when you’re only watching highlights (you know the end result is good).
Man this reminds me of the gif where Rafiki just yeets Simba off of Pride Rock.
This feels like the moment in Happy Gilmore when he hits the putt after training with Chubbs.
Just wow.
This is cinema
Ethics
Defender (I think Kenrich Wlliams?) totally fell asleep on that play. Even if he assumed Wemby was taking the shot he needs to get in position to box out, which would have stopped Johnson from being wide open.
This play made me so happy. That Spurs basketball . That’s coaching and a high level IQ play.🔥
That’s Wemby Ball baby! The new era is begun! LFG
Ethical basketball
Fkn trebuchet arms firing that one in there
I love Sean Elliot commentating
lmao keldon is so goofy
Very ethical!
Spurs should make this jersey/court combo their main uniforms. Looks so good.
Just put the spurs up against the thunder round 1, then literally any team in the playoffs can win the championship.
It’s crazy that him shooting is just as bad as passing it. Hard to beat.
OKC is going to need to get a anti-wemby defender because wemby kills OKC.
So only his body can hold this team back?
Bang
Taco bell ahh court lol I like it though
Isn’t this old?
Dude…
Alrighty, it’s time for all those “bubble team” and “they might win a series in the playoffs” talks to stop. This team is here
Every 3 is an open 3 for wemby
If Wemby can develop to anywhere close to Giannis’s physic the league is in trouble fr.
So he is straight diming now. Okay
Court and color way are elite
So ethical!
That’s a travel.
[removed]
Waaaaaaaaa.
Are you salty ? Can a few free throws help you feel better ?
Allow me to quote a great poet, from this video.
“FUCK EM” - Keldon “Big Body” Johnson
No post about the spurs whistle this game?
Tend to get more FTs when you get in the paint. The Spurs outscored the thunder by 20+ points in the paint and OKC spent half the game avoiding it because Wemby was in there
[deleted]
You’re too early as a hater.
Give us 2 to 3 years man. Come on.
It helps to mute your TV when the Disney channel is on
There are dozen of you
I mean it’s not surprising. Most basketball players his height can’t do the things he does.
I think we should appreciate it as much as we can while he’s still around, cus I don’t think we’ll be seeing a player like him for a long time once he’s retired.
yes
