The idea came from soccer right? I dont ever see teams calling in season champions losers or make it seem worthless like NBA but then again I dont really keep up with soccer much

They’re also games that are separate from the regular season domestic league, and could feature match-ups with teams from different leagues.
The NBA Cup is just a set of regular season games that have been designated to the NBA Cup tournament.
They’re quite a bit different.
The fa cup,and the pokal are domestic cup competitions. It will mostly be playing teams you play all season in the deep stages of the tournament. So the only real difference is the games not counting towards the league and the history behind the competitions.
They even labelled it an appetiser — acknowledging that it’s minor but still something to be proud of

Yeah I dont get it. College basketball has the same thing where fans shit on teams for celebrating mid season tourney wins and conference championships. Makes no sense. They won a competition. Why should they not be allowed to celebrate? Just because a bigger competition also exists doesn’t mean that all others are meaningless.
Teams caring about the in season tourney and celebrating it is objectively good for the sport and adds excitement to the otherwise long and mundane regular season.

This is less about celebrating an achievement and more about marketing from Knicks. From a marketing perspective, NBA Cup winning = more marketing content. Whatever attracts the eyes of New Yorkers.
