[Charania] The NBA has Cameron Indoor Stadium, the home of Duke University’s basketball teams, as among “strong options” for hosting the NBA Cup finals should they move from Las Vegas, with the switch coming as soon as 2026
Better then most nba cup courts
isnt the appeal to “go to vegas with your team?” otherwise its just another road trip.
Exactly, like, the competition is cool and all, but the “going to Vegas” part was a big deal for the players and why they were cool with this.
Doesn’t hold the same appeal if you advance and get to go to Charlotte Durham lol.
Durham
So as of now at least 38 people think Cameron is in Charlotte
Getting to play a nba game at Cameron indoor would be pretty damn cool too lol also the appeal is 500k
It really wouldn’t be cool
Like a zero percent chance they go from a 20,000 person luxury stadium on the Vegas Strip to an old 9,000 person stadium on a college campus in suburban Raleigh anyway
Good thing it’s not in Raleigh. But also yeah I agree, this would not be worth the squeeze.
People don’t understand the Triangle at all smh
suburban Raleigh lmao
Cool in a unique/different way.. also you seem like fun at parties
night life would blow for these players before and after game
Dang and there would be no way for these millionaire basketball players to hop on a plane right after the game!
Yeah, I’m sure they’re hype to take a 3 hour flight to party for one night
Alright man I’ll go fuck myself what would you like me to say Jesus fucking Christ touch grass
Vegas has become just another place brother lol
Called it last night, lol. Can’t wait.
Feel like people are just kinda assuming that there will be this wild crazy electric crowd at college arenas just because. who is gonna fly out to North Carolina to watch their team play? it’s not gonna be student sections they won’t be able to afford it unless the school set aside tickets for them expressly to create that kinda atmosphere, which would be pretty cool.
Edit: crazy idea, make it a fucking home game for whatever team that has the highest net rating.
Wouldn’t that also be during finals and everyone getting ready to go home for winter break?
I’m not sure what schedule most schools are on these days
Gonzaga student here, basketball fans will absolutely show up in droves even if it’s during finals
Give it to Nebrasketball, the closest pro team in anything for Nebraskans are the Chiefs/Royals, Wolves/Vikings/Twins, Wild, and Nuggets/Broncos/Rockies/Avalanche lol
I’d bet PBA would be sold out
If it’s in Cameron it will be packed
No. NBA needs to have more gimmicks to mask the actual issue, the style of play, frequency of injured NBA stars along with load management.
Last year was one of the best NBA seasons in a long while but you guys want to act like everything is broken.
That is a blanket statement. What made it one of the best? Many beg to differ
Lots of good games, quality of talent is the highest it has ever been with some of the greatest players ever to play the game still playing at a high level even as veterans near the end of their career, the new tier of MVP quality players like Jokic and SGA, amazing new rookies bringing excitement, great playoffs. I don’t know what else you want.
It’s mainly the people who do not actually watch the games that complain about the quality because the quality of the actual basketball being played is as high as it has ever been and I’ve been following the nba for 40 years.
The style of play is the best it’s been in a long time right now
Hilarious
Yeah they’ve clearly never been to Cameron Indoor
The NBA will want to sell 3-4x as many tickets as are available in Cameron. And why exactly are they choosing Durham, North Carolina during the college finals week as the backdrop? I can tell you with personal guarantee that the place is not prepared for a weekend of NBA who’s whos.
You don’t think the NBA has looked at the amount of seats when thinking of this? You think they simply overlooked that?
I think it’s only a story because Silver is an alum
Nah, I just think they’re greedy and thinking “We can charge stupid money because Cameron only holds 9k”
Cameron is just about the worst arena you could pick because it is tiny. UNC and NCSU have arenas that hold ~20k.
I don’t think they’ll pick it eventually either for the same reason, but the comment I responded to, insinuating that the NBA simply had “never been to Camron Indoor” is so absurd on its face. Is this just a PR move? Maybe, but they know what the arena is lmao.
The thing is, if you have been to Cameron the idea is so patently absurd on its face that it kinda forces the question out of you, because nobody that has been would propose it
The idea that the nba commissioner who is a Duke alum has never been into Cameron Indoor is a much more absurd idea than the idea of hosting an NBA game there
Bro the idea of an NBA cup game at Duke is absurd. Its in NC, in a small arena that is on a Duke’s college campus. Imagine having the whose who of NBA stars showing up to collegetown NC along with 9k fans to be on a college campus with 18-22 years old during finals week. That just screams unfucking serious.
It would certainly make for a more intimate experience, for what it’s worth I don’t think it will happen either but my point is….you don’t think the NBA knows Cameron Indoor is small? Of course they know. If they make this decision its to try and replicate the experience of a big college basketball game, which, plainly, the NBA doesn’t have.
The triangle is a basketball mecca and they could go 5mins down the street to the UNC arena if that was their marketing tactic. Could have duke unc play the game before.
I guess silver just saw that the unc at duke games start at 2k and thought he could get that money.
I don’t think you can overstate how small Cameron is. It’s a glorified high school stadium.
100%. Anyone who has lived in Durham or the Triangle knows better.
This would be awesome.
Do you guys think the NBA could ever do an outdoor stadium series like NHL does? Like put a court on famous outdoor courts in America? Or would it just be way too difficult?
Like Nebraska volleyball did when they played on the football field?
Yeah, that was awesome. It would never happen but a game in Rucker Park would be cool. Like how the MLB did the Field Of Dreams game.
Shit agree, not sure about Rucker tho logistically. But yea, field of dreams or winter classic that nhl does would be awesome.
Only problem would be the cold, but it would be really cool if they played on some famous street courts around the country
They talked about Rucker Park a few years ago when the Field of Dreams games happened in MLB.
Just thinking about blacktop burn from diving for loose balls…yeesh. Probably won’t happen because they’ll want to play in a setting that won’t have players second guessing about making hustle plays
I think for one night they could lay down a floor and play it on wood. The issue would be space. The price for entrance would be exorbitant. NBA should improve its product and not just nostalgia/aura farm.
That would be incredible. Not sure how it would work but imagine the Knicks vs someone. The atmosphere would be insane.
I don’t see how they could keep the atmosphere.
You could only accommodate a few hundred fans while keeping the vibe right, and the NBA would never be able or willing to sell those few hundred tickets to the right folks to keep the vibe to what it should be.
They should put a wood court on Lambeau. Can’t strain your calf if it is too icy to get grip
I’m sure there’s video to remind me this was kind of awkward, but whenever this comes up the first thing that comes to mind is when they played that North Carolina game on the deck of an aircraft carrier.
They already did this bubba
They have but only four preseason games, and last time was back in 2010 I think. Suns vs Mavs preseason game.
Do you even remember how that turned out?
Not gonna happen anytime soon.
The Suns vs Mavs outdoor preseason game went fine. From Googling real quick the court surface was 90 degrees but the weather was fine, no wind. Suns ended up winning. Highlight are fun to watch on YouTube.
Then why hasn’t it happened again?
Idk, but the NBA has thought about it.
“We’ve explored [the idea], and we’ll continue to talk about it.” – Evan Wasch, NBA Executive Vice President of Basketball Strategy and Analytics.
Well when it happens we can discuss it.
Back to reality
We never left reality lol
If they charge the high ticket prices that are seen in Vegas for the current in-season tournament, I doubt the league will have any more success in these college towns, either. The attendance for the school’s teams is due to student and alumni loyalty, as well as cheaper student tickets.
Why would someone at Duke give a damn if OKC is playing versus the 76ers at their school’s arena and the NBA is charging ridiculous prices?
Edit: Might as well go all-in on the money and hold it at the United Arab Emirates University
I actually think it will eventually go to the UAE. Especially since they sponsor it already
Slow your roll champ, Riyadh Season NBA Tournament doesn’t even sound far fetched with how they’re getting involved in all sports.
Just let a team have homecourt. Decide based on group play or margin of victory or whatever.
Imagine that final game between the knicks and spurs was at msg instead? Would’ve been electric
You have no idea what you’re talking about if you think a game at Cameron wouldn’t sell out.
I find it incredibly hard to believe that would ever happen. Cameron Indoor has less than 10k capacity
They probably want crazy ticket prices in a small but prestigious venue to add to the hype.
College arenas have an amazing atmosphere because of the student section. If you eliminated the students and have crazy high prices, it’s going to he old rich people and corporate buyers. The crowd would be small and horrible.
They are selling TV rights. The game looks better with a packed crowd
That’s exactly the reason they’re doing it. Nobody wanted to come to the NBA Cup in a normal sized NBA arena, so just hold it in a much smaller arena. Problem solved!
NC cmon and raise up Take your shirt off Spin it round your head like a helicopter
Maybe they could get Petey Pablo to perform at halftime
I think its spelled Dubai.
Also the NBA Cup may happen after the pre season and during that point of the regular season called Riyadh Season.
This is lame man. Just my opinion 🤷🏻♂️
Dukebai
That would be the most dull game at Cameron ever played after they fill it with corporate sponsors and fake fans
The change in venue isn’t going to get fans traveling to the game. Or people to go to a game if their team isn’t in it.
My understanding is the NBA wants to move this due to attendance issues (which are in turn making the games seem less exciting for television).
Which makes me wonder (with no skin in the game); if Vegas can’t keep the NBA Cup due to attendance issues, are they even a legitimate expansion city?
The problem with vegas as a neutral site for the cup games is that the teams that end up going won’t know till a week or two before. If its a team like us that’s on the east coast, getting tickets to Vegas at the last minute is fucking expensive. It was $700 when I checked. Most knicks fans weren’t going to drop that plus hotel and food expenses to watch a game or two, no matter how cheap the game tickets were. It only works for knicks fans living on the west coast.
I’m sure the same thing applied to Spurs fans also. It might not be as expensive from NY, but it most likely was costly to go to Vegas from Texas at the last minute. The team literally flew a plane full of fans up just to fill seats.
So if the NBA wants to continue using Vegas as a neutral site then they need to find a way or work a deal with the airlines and others to make it not cost prohibitive for fans who want to travel a very long way to see their teams on a moments notice.
???
Vegas is routinely one of these cheapest destinations.
I think nyc is probably cheaper but rdu wont be better for last minute. They were probably expensive because the knicks were in it lol. Theyre richer than thunder fans in okc. Airplanes can only ship like 500 people. Imagine 10000 new yorkers flying in on mon-tues then flying out Wednesday. Its always going to be expensive af unless you prebook and pay the insurance to let you cancel. You have to outbid thousands of new yorkers for a seat
So, after it bombs, next year, they propose having it in the Emirate Arab States.
I see the game going to potential new expansion cities. Seattle, Vancouver, St Louis , Kansas City, San Diego, Mexico City, London
Who cares?
Prefer to get rid of the neutral court since the crowd sounds dead during the game.
So stupid lol
It is genuinely very small in there. This won’t get past the cool article title phase.
They should have it at Snoop Dogg’s mansion he bought in the meta verse
Yea… what could go wrong bringing NBA players around college students. I wonder?
Idk about the others but the Suns vs Mavs outdoor preseason game in 2010 went fine.
That would go crazy
Feels like LV isn’t gonna get a team in the expansion which is a good thing
more coverage about a potential cup at Duke than Coop breaking brons record. seems fishy
The Palestra. Considered the cathedral of college basketball. And it’s in Philly- which would go bonkers for it.
Why take it out of Vegas? I like having basketball where I live lol. Who tf is going to fly to NC to watch their team play? Tickets will be expensive as hell in that small gymnasium
What about Allen Fieldhouse at KU? Its capacity is over 15k and within 45 minutes of Kansas City.
Or even T Mobile Center in Kansas City wouldn’t be a bad option
It won’t have the same energy, going to be lame
Why is this in the nba sub? I see nfl highlights…
I am ALL for this- but with a couple caveats.
Every NBA team should get to play at a college and it should be the students that get to go there first and foremost. None of this corporate nonsense. Get the students in there packing the place.
I cannot imagine how insane Gallagher Iba Arena in Stillwater, Oklahoma would be if the thunder came to town.
Kibbie Dome robbed again, when will they learn
Coincidence this news is coming out the same time Silver says NBA is deciding on NBA expansion in the next year? Vegas is going to get a team so they don’t want to host it there anymore.
I don’t caaaaare
Fuck it, might as well make the cup games college pit stops
Sweet.
Lol parents went to Cameron for a game but it was a decade ago.
Its super small and it isnt lets just say been updated in awhile. Would be interesting how that would transfer
Team could go for a walk through Duke Gardens together after the game 🥺
No chance
Way too small of a venue
During academics finals
The stadium is right in the middle of campus.
Sorry, it needs to be in TURKEY.
Cheapest ticket will be $1000
“nobody wants to come to our stupid NBA Cup final in Vegas, so let’s just move it to a really small venue”
Adam silver went to duke
Why move it? It’s currently in the home town of their gambling overlords
rupp arena holds like 20k and half the good guards in the league went to UK. feels like a snub
this feels like a massive fumble, no? having to go from a pro sports size arena in vegas w all the glitz that comes w a trip to vegas on the nba’s dome to playing at college arenas that tend to be in the middle of nowhere comparatively like durham or like storrs for uconn or bloomington for indiana is a huge downgrade for player and fan experiences. (just a couple of similar examples, not heard these mentioned but figure they would be if you’ll talking historic college basketball locations). Maybe if they are like ya let’s play at MSG like a st. john’s does or philly’s arena w villanova as the “host” you can get away w it but otherwise it just feels like playing at a worse venue where traveling to see the game is less enjoyable
is the Palestra still standing?
Fail
