To see how he behaves makes me wonder how he was in Portland and the end of his tenure w the suns… He seems very joyful and charismatic like his mother from the thanksgiving vid that was shared. Congrats to him on this feat! Glad these folks still give back to their community.

Expectations are everything. When a team uses the #1 overall pick on a guy and gives him a max, they’re expecting a hell of a lot out of that guy, and it’s tough to measure up to what those expectations are. But if you signed him for half the MLE and all you gave up was a roster spot for him, you feel like anything you get is gravy. That’s an easy bar to step over.

That is right. But also PHX FO, coach, and then fans made him a scapegoat of failure. After Ayton they couldnt even make the playoffs eventually. He was not the problem.

Similar stuff with scapegoating Dillon Brooks with Memphis. Team suffers since he left.

Didnt this dude just lay down during a playoff game and let his team play 4on5. He may have grown up since then and hes been great for the lakers at the price they got him for, but im not blaming the suns here.

In the four games the Suns lost (straight) to lose those Finals, CP3 was -37 and had a negative +/- in every game (and a worse one than Ayton in each individual game).

Ayton was -15 across those four games, and despite losing G5 by 4 points, they won Ayton’s minutes by +6 (he played almost every single minute of that game, coming in at a team high 45 minutes).

The Suns somewhat collapsed + the Bucks played the best ball of their lives during that stretch, but it’s absolute horseshit to lay that at Ayton’s feet just because that’s been the easy narrative.

He missed a game because he lived in an area that was genuinely unreachable because of a weather event that Portland wasn’t ready for, which is why the people that the Blazers sent to try and get Ayton for the game weren’t able to reach him. It’s not like he was being lazy.

Only dude on earth who would catch flack from fans for missing a game due to insane and unexpected weather conditions, I swear to god.

I think the Suns front office and coaching failed the team. Ayton sacrificed personal numbers and become a defensive anchor in the finals run and when it was time to pay the Suns cheapest out. Then the team gets whooped by the Mavs too to bottom and is scapegoated. Then he tries to go to Indy and the Suns retain him.

I think a lot of players would have been malcontent after all that bullshit. Also the Suns got worse and Montys out of the league so it’s not like getting rid of Ayton was any kind of positive.

He didn’t get along with his coach who got absolutely laughed out of the league after being away from that Sun’s roster for a single season.

Idk what kind of locker room presence Ayton had, I wasn’t inside that room and neither was any other fan. He probably isn’t blameless. But based on reporting and what we saw from Monty in Detroit I think Ayton’s issues were more complex than just “locker room cancer.” Also that was happening during contract disputes which heightens emotions.

Is it really his fault, or more the Suns org just didn’t care to help him out/inspire him?
