Despite the loss, Cooper Flagg’s 42 points is the most points in a game by an 18 year old in NBA history.
Surpasses Bron’s 37 points against the Celtics on December 13, 2003. Youngest ever to score 40 in a game.
He turns 19 in like 6 days too so that was a pretty clutch performance to take that achievement lol
Just noticed that lol, he was motivated for sure
My Clutch King is clutch in every situation
Bro really had to squeeze that record in before his birthday expired lmao. Imagine if he dropped like 39 and then turned 19 the next day, would’ve been devastating
He technically had a little extra time because multiple other players had scored it at 19 Lebron was just the youngest at 19.1 years old.
Man it’s crazy how quickly he caught up to Tatum in age
As crazy as that is, I can’t get over the fact that LeBron scored 37 in a game 22 years ago and then scored 26 last night including the game winning points. Fucking madness.
The game is also completely different, rookie Bron would without a doubt have a 40 point game at some point this season in 2025. Not even a question. I mean the top 3 scorers that season, TMac 28, AI 26, KG 24. AI also only played 48 games.
He did have a 40 point game in his rookie season. It just happened after his 19th birthday. I think the more fun fact is that Cooper is 4 games behind bron at “20 point games before turning 19” but Coopers birthday is before brons in the calendar year.
I’m not a LeBron guy, but scoring 37 points in 2003-2004 is quite a feat.
It was literally the lowest scoring year since the 1950s. The 80s and the today saw teams scoring 17-23ppg more than that season. While I’m definitely not a Kobe guy, I think that him putting up 35.4ppg in that era with decent efficiency is the most impressive scoring season since Wilt.
The Maine Event is the real deal
To not just break a LeBron record, but to do it while having the weight of the entire franchise on his shoulders at 18, is absurd. We talked about him being ‘The Maine Event’ for years, but to see it translate this quickly to the NBA game is special. We are watching a generational talent in real time.
It is definitely impressive, no doubt, but I think its also worth mentioning that Bron did it in a completely different era where the top 3 scorers had 28, 26, 24, some guys consistently get 20 in the first half these days.
The 50th highest scoring game by a player in 2004 was 38 points, this season it’s already 40 and it’s only December lol
Lol exactly
You mean we’ve already had 50+ 40 burgers this year in the first not even 2 months?
This guy doing this at age 18 might be pretty good
Damn 20 free throws
This is the era to be setting single-game or single-season offensive records…
He’s learning how to become an unethical hooper.
Unlikely, but he has 2 more games to past that before turning 19 to make it even harder for someone else to pass him.
18th (@home) vs. Pistons, 20th (away) vs. 76ers.
Come on coop! No bias
He has 2 of the top 5 points games with the other 3 being lebron. Could take majority with a 35 point game or higher.
He’s 60 points below kobe for second most points by an 18yo total. Could have two monster games and beat that. Lebron is too far ahead with 625. Kobe has 539. Flag has 479. Lebron did it in 31 games, kobe 71. Flagg has 26 right now.
If he scores 40 x 2 he wont surpass lebron for most ppg (20.2). Hes currently 18.4 and 2 40 games would put him at 20.0 (barely 19.96).
Good to know. But points during 18 years of age is not a good metric as those who played more games at 18 years of age has such a big advantage that it’s just not possible to beat if you only played a few games or none at all as in most cases. Average is a better metric.
I laid out everything in my first reply lol. Theyre just fun stats.
For another fun stat, booker is 3rd in ppg with 14.
He played 1 game as an 18yo.
Amazing stats u beautiful boy
Dang 2 days off from being the 22 Year anniversary
All my fellow Flaggots rise!
A Dirk game to give mans a little hope, as a treat
Maybe Nico was smart taking Adam Silvers deal…
And he’s only one year younger than Tatum
Haters are gonna say he needed overtime and it was to the Jazz
He still got to 40 in regulation. 4 seconds to spare.
im sure Lebron also played some version of todays Jazz in 2003. Im a huge Lebron homer, but records will be broken
those celtics were 36-46 so not jazz-level bad
im not saying the celtics were bad, im saying Lebron played some bad teams that year
This sub had some people flaming him a few weeks ago for saying he was below expectations. Glad he’s really coming into his own and showing out
Don’t know if it was this sub but there was a post 6 games into the season calling him a bust lol. Nice to see Flagg balling out.
Is there a high-scoring mark for every age?
Of course there is. I don’t have a list, but I know Devin Booker has the record for 20 year olds with his 70 point game
The greatest stat padding game of all time
yea; highest for 19 yrs old is 45 (cliff robinson) so flagg almost broke that too. only 19 yr olds with 42+ points: ant, bron, gg jackson, cliff robinson
The Maine Event is a terrific nickname
He’s gonna have a 50 piece this year. We are incredibly fortunate to have this guy after that idiot gave away our last generational guy
Individual scoring is inflated, and doesn’t matter as much in this era
Genuinely sit him in the second half and the Mavs win by 20. Glaze the big scoring # all you want, he had a bad game. He created more jazz points off turnovers than he had in made field goals. Defensive cone at best, and 1 creater mostly. Give any NBA player 27 shots and every possesion with the green light and they will score 40 and lose, it’s why Russel Westbrook never won anything. It’s not winning basketball, and wasn’t a good game objectively.
Ignore the bot, people.
attacking the commenter not the argument because it’s objectively correct. That second half was genuinely the most losing basketball by a single player of any team all season. -23 on the court in second half lol. The team had to work hard to compensate when he sat.
idk abt win by 20 but his second half was obv a negative for the team, he’s still a rookie tho and has shown he can carry the team in other games
Coop is not a defensive cone lol
As someone who thinks the refs genuinely were trying to rig the game, and give him an insane whistle, this is stupid as shit, lmao.
Bro was the only Mav that struck fear in my heart. Even without 20 free throw attemtps, he was taking advantage of our lack of defense, and attacking the rim really well.
