I don’t know what this proves. DV over Hali/Maxey made sense considering we needed a wing not a guard. All I’m saying is that DV is still a solid pick. The others I won’t argue.
I just included all first round picks since they started the rebuild. Never said Vassell is bad but Haliburton was available at his pick position and was widely considered the superior pick at the time
i see. Vassell was billed and has played for us as a 3. We had Dejounte Murray and Derrick White at the time so there was no reason to draft a guard. we also needed wing help so DV fit.
If you draft a good player who contributes to winning, that essentially always counts as a good draft pick, even if someone better was picked later. The most obvious example is probably how Rockets picking Hakeem at 1 is still considered a good pick and not a mistake at all even though Jordan went at 3 after him.

Mock drafts are a bit tough to look at in hindsight because the closer to the draft you look at them it’s when teams have already basically signaled who they’re taking (especially in the top 5). For your first link look at the date, it’s updated super close to the draft. Here’s the archived version (a month or so before the draft).
Same thing for your second link. All in all the Topic injury affected quite a bit but i dont think it was as clear cut as you’re making it seem.
The first link is big board. It has nothing to do with teams. And even after the draft it still reflects how those rookies was seen. Hence why Dalton Knecht was 7th and Edey at 17th despite their actual draft position. Castle at 4th tells you how he was viewed around the time of the draft
and yet the point stands for the second link. which means it really wasn’t consensus that Castle was going 4 until news came out the Spurs really liked him. i mean the days leading up to the draft people thought we’d go Rob Dillingham at 4. Buzelis being 5th on that big board yet being picked 6 picks later shows how bad that draft class really was.

But that’s the point I’m making, as a basketball player that is what makes him one of the best, but it’s not what makes you the most popular amongst fans. Shai plays in an extremely efficient way that works perfectly for the system OKC has built, and he is super polished around media, but most fans are not analysts or serious basketball players, so that’s not what they are looking for. The average fan tends to like players who may play more inefficient, but does flashy stuff and is an entertaining personality. I’m not saying that should matter to SGA, winning should be his priority of course, but basketball is entertainment for people at the end of the day. It wasn’t Haliburton’s super efficient passing and handles that made him the star of the playoffs last season, it was those game winners and taunts, and his more outgoing personality off the court.
I do agree with you to an extent, but I would argue that it’s a helluva lot easier to appreciate the 2014 Spurs over the 2025 Thunder. Tim’s accomplishments are his team’s accomplishments so you kind of need to appreciate his teams when talking about him a lot more than other all time greats.
