100% agree in that case. I understand what he’s going for but the wording definitely did give me pause until I remembered who I was listening to. “Those” was just a really unfortunate word to use even though I think the joke itself was fine.
I think it was intentional. It was intended to offend sensibilities and provoke thought on whether it made more sense to be offended by the phrasing or political reality. Sometimes you just have to say the odious thing in order for people to see it for what it is.
Listen to Zach Lowe’s podcast a week or two ago with SVG. He hates what is going on with the current fascist administration.
His comment, “they deport those” is absolutely an insult to those that want to deport, “them”.
If you take things out of context and within a vacuum, sure.
No question that the current political climate is very hostile towards immigrants (despite them building the country), but actively looking for a reason to be pissed off about someone who has historically never shown any indication of being a bigot is a huge stretch.
Nuance is required in these situations.
I don’t think SVG said it with malice (and indeed was probably exasperatedly highlighting the inhumanity of it all), but I think he fell victim to a poor choice of words there. It happens, but it’s also important to not allow the normalization of treating other human beings as objects (“those”) and instead as other people (“them”) at a bare minimum.
We do so much to demonize and label immigrants anyway, and refusing to treat people with dignity through language as a basic initial courtesy just doesn’t sit right with me (and historically has led down some really dark paths in the worst-case scenario)
In context its wild, too. Its very dehumanizing. Its also obvious he wasn’t saying its good- if anything it’s poking fun at the ridiculousness. But still dehumanizing to speak of people that way
That’s the point. He’s pointing out how dehumanizing the deportations are right now and how especially dehumanizing the current administration is.
I disagree. There are different ways of coping, and addressing, bigotry and racism. Especially when you’re providing national commentary for a game involving a ball, that even children are watching.
I appreciate that you guys are trying to be mindful of how the media discusses a topic as serious as immigration policy, but I genuinely think SVG deserves some slack regarding this.
He misspoke. It happens. It’s clear what he meant, and trying to nitpick at a slip-up is dumb.
The problem nowadays is that we hold good people to the perfect standards; one slip up or imperfect wording is treated as a bad thing.
This in contrast to people who are outwardly nasty to other people who have such long leashes because it’s already what we expect from them.
Of all the issues the world is facing, nitpicking this should be at the very bottom of everyone’s list.
It’s in poor taste, and not really the type of thing to joke about. How do we expect people to take the issue seriously when it’s a punchline in a basketball game?
I don’t think SVG is a bad guy or a bigot or should get fired or anything like that, but this was a bad look. It’s OK to call it out.
