They did that shit with the NFL playoffs too, putting a game exclusively on peacock instead of airing it on NBC.

Yeah I think that was the idea from the start. Opening night might’ve had both games on NBC, but since then (I think) you get one of the games and the other is on Peacock. I was confused the 2nd time the Warriors were part of the doubleheader and kept seeing NBC listed as TV for the game but then it wasn’t on NBC. Then I learned how it works.

The strategy is clear but then why launch NBCSN back again only to show lot of what is on Peacock. On top of NBA, done this with Premier League & college hoops.

NBC intentionally did this on opening night, scheduling the Lakers game at 7pm local after the OKC game at 5pm local. This guaranteed overlap and compelled Lakers fans (because NBC must contractually show their 1st game in full before moving onto the 2nd game) to sign up for a ‘free trial’ Peacock subscription. And as planned, by the time the OKC game ended in 2OT, the Lakers game was nearly at halftime.

Get some Lakers fans to sign up for a week trial to see the 2nd game on NBC that night, and have them hopefully forget so that they pay the $18/month subscription.

Is it really their greed to try and recoup SOME of the insane rights fees they had to pay? Pretty sure they’re likely to lose money on that deal in the end.

I watch the other game because it’s frictionless. If I have to switch services, I’m as likely to turn on pluribus as I am the next game

It’s partly that but more to do with local affiliates not wanting local news to either be significantly delayed or pre-empted entirely one night a week nearly every week of the regular season. Local news is how local stations earn money more so than airing network NBC programming.

I thought a couple of affiliates showed both (El Paso, I believe?)

My big “what’s up with NBA ratings” belief for years is that the east coast teams being so bad compared to the west has been a huge problem. I live in central time and trying to watch a nuggets or OKC national game during the week sucks. I’m 39 with a 4 year old… I just can’t stay up that late to watch all the best players.

Western conference after dark

Just to put it in perspective - as of 2020, 49% of the US’s population lived in Eastern time, and 27% lived in Central time. Put together, that’s over 3/4ths of the country’s population that overwhelmingly will look to be in bed by 12a eastern on weekdays. Anything that makes that segment of the population even slightly more likely to tune in for a meaningful amount of time is going to have an outsized effect on total viewership just by virtue of that alone.

Yeah, I’ve tried, and by halftime I’m ready for bed. The western conference usually has the better matchups, so I want to watch their games, but I’m not staying up until 2 in the morning.

I will at least stay up till 12 to see the game until halftime and maybe if its interesting enough ill stay a bit more, 11pm 11:10 start is just brutal tho even as a pretty die hard 26 year old.

You’re missing the point. The 11pm ET game is designed for West Coast viewers in the same way the 8pm ET game is targeted for East Coast viewers.

Why come they don’t play the games in secret and then just kinda give us the rundown of what happened until OKC eventually wins.

How about 7PM and 9:30PM? At least the people on the west coast will be awake when the east coast game is playing…

Past my bedtime

Diabolical if the NBA schedules a Tuesday Lakers game at 10:30pm local in which it would finish around 1:00-1:30am (if it doesn’t go to overtime), and you have kids and parents needing to get up for work and school in like four or five hours.

They don’t like 7pm est games cause that means they miss out on a lot of west coast people still at work at 4pm.

yeah…well now think about starting to watch the game at 10:30pm or 11PM to finish at 1 or 1:30 or even 2 AM.

East Coast is getting shafted worse

its cause starting at 11 means that at 12 midnight, you’re maybe somewhere in the 2nd quarter. When if it starts at 10:30, 12 midnight you’re past halftime and in the 3rd…you think to yourself, “I can tough it out to finish this game”.

Oh and start the game on time lol. It’s not hard. I’m so tired of “game starts 13 minutes after it said it was going to”
