As someone who tore my achilles exactly how Tyrese Haliburton did, I can say that calf issues are certainly the precursor.

I’d played 3 days in a row, I was dehydrated af and when I got to the gym I got called in to play right away without stretching. My calves had been suuuper tight all day, I didn’t even have a strain just dehydration and didn’t stretch and overuse.

I took what I thought was a very low intensity zero step and I guess my calf didn’t engage fully so my achilles bore the brunt and popped.

You make so many movements in basketball that subconsciously rely on your calf engaging, it’s almost impossible to avoid/prevent making those moves or even intentionally proactively engage your calf in those situations. Especially in the flow of a competitive game.

Players shouldn’t push this at all, as we’ve seen over the years and even more so recently. Almost every single one has been preceded by a calf strain that they came back too soon from.

As it should. Plenty of evidence showing prior calf strains and playing thru it leads to a tear in the Achilles. Yea you can play thru a calf strain but it sure as hell ain’t worth missing a full season and your future. Just take the L and miss a month and come back healthy

It does make sense when you look at every 7’3” or taller NBA player ever and how injury prone they always are

In fact I can’t think of a single NBA player over 7’3” that didn’t have injury problems. From Embiid to Sampson to Yao. 

I mean based on his career so far he literally is lmao

Take a look at every NBA player above 7’3” and their injury history… you’ll see that pretty much every one had some bad injury problems throughout their career. Some managed to still be great despite it though, like Kareem.

I think there was a stat where less than 5 people have won all nba or a major award in the history of the league. If they take it out now flood gates probably would be open.

It has a good amount to do with our record, but if you are seeing the games, the effort has just not been there. They’ve been genuinely painful to watch at times because 60% of the shots are from 3. No ball movement, nothing. No getting back on defense. The vibes have been rancid

The Cavs are done, man. Garland isn’t coming back right this season. Their leadership is terrible. They’ve flamed out of the playoffs repeatedly. Stick a fork in ‘em.

What? They let Jerome go and traded Okoro. The team is nearly the same. I’d argue the bench depth is slightly better.

but now end-of-season awards have become something both players and teams arent clawing to achieve

players arent gonna risk playing on a calf strain anymore, and teams will prefer to avoid the supermax. its weird.

star players are missing more games. they arent getting supermaxes/end of season awards as a result. title winning teams like OKC which shouldve had an extra 10% in cap taken up by Chet and JDub now have so much more flexibility. is that even the desired outcome?

Definitely being managed differently this season. I think it’s part that teams feel like if you’re going to lose a star for not giving them enough rest, its legitimately better to do that in the playoffs than in the middle of the season. That way you have a good idea of if you have the opportunity to tank for a year.

I also think it’s part that it’s in the forefront of everyone’s minds after Haliburton and Tatum’s high profile injuries in the playoffs last year. Don’t recall if Tatum had a calf strain in the lead up, but we all know what happened with Haliburton.

My math is probably shit but he can only miss 5 more games total.
