The reason the Jazz didn’t do it would be because they’d lose 24 million in capspace. Since they did this, they can have a max contract slot (or use that max for 2 or 3 good players), along with the luxury of paying Kessler. They have the luxury to go over the salary cap due to having Kessler’s qualifying offer after they use their max money on others

The Sixers did this when they didn’t offer Maxey a contract, so they could have max capspace to sign a max player, which they happened to sign Paul George, then since they had Maxey’s qualifying offer, they were able to then offer Maxey his money. Had they offered Maxey his max contract prior, they wouldn’t have had the opportunity to sign Paul George

Had they signed Kessler to 24 million a year, the Jazz have 24 million less in capspace, causing them to lose that luxury of going over the salary cap, and losing them the opportunity to sign a max player.

Will they sign a max contract player? Probably not, Trae is redundant when Key is playing great, but they can probably sign a good defensive player and a good 6th man to fill out the team with Kessler, Lauri, Key, Ace, hopefully a top 8 pick in next years draft too. Or they can use that max contract slot to eat a bad contract and take on some firsts.

The Jazz better keep Kessler. I personally think 24 a year is good value. I even went to the Jazz sub yesterday saying 35 million might be a slight overpay, but somewhat fair for Kessler. ⁵⁄₁₅₀ would even be fair value for him imo

Do people even watch basketball? This sub harps about zion, AD, morant, Kawhi, etc. for always being injured yet they say 25 mill per year for Kessler is a steal. He is as injury prone as it gets

He might be worth it, but you’ll run into the same problem you have with Lauri.

Yeah he’s probably worth the salary cap hold, but then nobody is giving up multiple picks and good players on top of that. It’s basically a neutral value contract at that point, unless you are desperate for a player in that position.

RFA makes it tricky, who is going to clear up their cap to offer him.

I think the context missing here is that Utah was unwilling to commit to that price range… in that offseason. By holding off they keep cap flexibility and can still pay him what he wants this coming offseason instead. 

They would only have signed him last offseason if it was a much smaller number, which he obviously wasn’t going to do. Hence the impasse. But I doubt much comes if it in the end, they’ll wait for FA and the first wave of trades to see what’s out there, then sign him/match the offer he gets. 

Idc what the cap breakdowns end up being, Kessler straight up isn’t worth $120M. Especially if he wanted a 4 year deal. He’d be untradeable within two years of signing a contract like that. Actually laughable. Idk what him/his agent is smoking, but I wish they’d pass some of it my way.

Dude only averages 25 mpg. You can’t tie that much money up in to a guy who’s a borderline starter at best, who would need another borderline starter to split minutes with. Shits insane.

Injury is a huge setback. Especially as this was a recurring one over many years that has been fixed apparently. I think he will be lucky to get ⁴⁄₁₀₀, but this is where the egregious tanking and messing with his minutes to lose games on purpose may have him and his reps wanting out.

Wouldn’t shock me if they intentionally seek out an offer sheet from someone like Washington (to play next to Sarr), just to make the Jazz shit or get off the pot. Wiz are going to have a load of cap space and need another big in the worst way.

Idk I think 24-27 million a year for one of the best defensive centers in basketball and a walking double double is pretty reasonable. Especially when you refuse to trade him because you perceive his value to be so high.

Jazz had a better team than now with Mitch and Gobert. It makes sense that they don’t want to waste cap space on a defensive center who’s not a Wemby or Chet. The west is too stacked to waste cap space on a guy who isn’t going to help them win that much more games. Even the Suns are better than expected. You only pay Kessler after you’ve proved your more than a play-in team. Bailey so far isn’t looking a great prospect either. The Jazz aren’t trying to rebuild for years. They used to be a top team in the west and have fairly new ownership. They want results. They aren’t the Wizards.

He’s going into RFA and they can just match whatever is offered should they choose to do so. Since he’s a late FRP his cap hold is very small, which allows Utah to sign FAs first and then sign him using bird rights.
