Disagree. You don’t need to make shots to influence winning. Gary is a good defender and regardless of if he makes shots other teams will guard him like he can which opens things up for others.

+/- is streaky for single games, but for full seasons it’s usable.

It shows that the boxscore doesn’t tell everything, you can do other helpful things like play lockdown defense and provide spacing or screen on offense.

If you do that well, you can still positively impact winning.

Single game +- is a noise machine. Season long plus minus is a bit better, but still flawed because again, there’s 9 other guys on the court.

Long term lineup +- is probably the best application of the +- stat. If a player appears on a bunch of lineups that are very positive that’s a better indicator of their ability.

Harris had a lot of lines like this last season for the Magic. His usage rate has just steadily dropped year over year, and his efficiency on shots has too. Rather inexplicably too imo. But, he still gets guarded like a shooter for the most part, and he is a legitimately elite perimeter defender,

Huge reason why he was still getting minutes for us last year over theoretically “better” offensive guys like Howard: Harris doesn’t make many mistakes out there in either end in his decision making
