In Edey’s case it seems like it’s his size. He didn’t start playing basketball until he was much older and he looks slimmer and in better shape than when he was in Purdue.

Humans that size just aren’t meant to take the kind of pounding NBA players go through. Yao Ming also suffered from foot problems. I hope this is a one off for Edey and not chronic.

Yeah I understand a lot of guys need to bulk up once they get to the league to not get bullied, but like you said, they train their muscles to hell and neglect training tendons to be able to handle those forces, and without thinking how training in these positions is affecting their movement on the court/field.

People think all you need to do to be stronger is get bigger muscles, and it’s somewhat accurate, but we’re missing a big piece of the puzzle.

it’s likely cumulative and not the result of any particular incident. I had the same ankle surgery as edey about one month after he had his and can attest that even though the repaired ligament itself feels 100% fine, the rest of the foot/ankle/lower calf takes a lot longer to bounce back, even after months of daily rehab.

also, either of the two forms of ligament reconstruction he could have had require some sort of augmentation to the fibula or other nearby bones—either small bone anchors for a standard repair, or larger anchors for a suture tape repair. since this injury is basically bone inflammation, my guess is that the anchor site(s) have become irritated due to strain/excess load.

that said, I personally am aiming my anger at the grizzlies medical staff since a) this is not the first post-surgical injury he’s had, and b) IMO the grizz are the worst team in the league for ankle care. they’ve completely destroyed ja’s. it pisses me the fuck off
