I mean, the sports book first caught it and reported it because from what I’ve read it was super obvious, costing them money and they’re obligated to report that to the authorities, it wasn’t like they were doing it out of the kindness of their heart or because they wanted to protect the NBA.

I also meant it more like “legalized sports betting and it being constantly jammed into every aspect of basketball” is bad for the integrity of the game, not “the sports books are pushing the players to bet on games”. I refuse to believe it’s a coincidence that we’ve already had all these gambling scandals including: a player banned for life for betting on games, a player falsely accused of betting on games costing them a contract, the Rozier situation and possibly the Billups situation depending on how that shakes out since sports betting has become such a big part of the NBA discourse.

FWIW I fully think people should be allowed to bet on basically anything they want, its the coupling of betting on basketball with the actual official basketball league and the fact that the league has a whole list of “official betting partners” that I find wrong and consider a conflict of interest.

I don’t think the NBA could have done much if their internal investigation didn’t turn anything up. They don’t have the power of the FBI to investigate.

But they can at least just say that the Heat did nothing wrong and just give them a little back and give them more flexibility.

This is what I’ve figured will be the conclusion to this bullshit from the get go. A compensatory pick either directly after the lottery, or in between the first and second round. It’s not fair for the league to allow the trade to go through, but it’d be equally fucky to take the pick back at this point tbh.

I don’t think there’s any chance of this happening. I was curious a few weeks ago and searched through the CBA for anything I could find related to investigations and trades. The short version is that I did not find anything that suggested this needed to be or even could be disclosed.

Here’s what I did find. The league has a legal obligation to inform the player under investigation, their team, and the players association when they initiate an investigation. They must also inform these groups about the findings of the investigation.

I could find nothing that said it needed to be communicated as a part of a trade. I couldn’t find anything that said what was standard to disclose as a part of a trade either. It did say that the NBA was obligated to protect confidentiality wherever possible, so likely they are obligated not to share with any other team because they did not find anything punishable. (Which obviously would be announced publicly). Interestingly, players are also allowed to refuse to cooperate with an investigation if they have concerns that cooperation could lead to criminal charges.

Bottom line is that I don’t think the NBA or Charlotte did anything wrong as far as the CBA is concerned, which is really the only thing that matters.

Stern had a hand in causing this problem when he leaked the previous NBA betting scandal. FBI can’t trust the NBA to not leak stuff and mess up their investigation, so it’s not like they can contact the NBA and say hey, this guy is under investigation.

The most appropriate thing to have done would be to tell his current team that he is under a trade freeze until the investigation goes public. Nothing gets announced prematurely, no transactions get made, the team can be coy in trade talks and just say “we’re not marketing Rozier right now” and leave it at that.

The sleaziest thing by far is to let his team trade him and his new team with no way of knowing about the investigation until they get blindsided. It’s honestly better to just announce it at that point.

Being under investigation isn’t the same as doing anything wrong.

They didn’t even need to tell the Heat why he can’t be traded. They could have just said there was an issue, and that Rozier couldn’t be dealt at the time. I don’t think the Heat or any other team would press the issue.

Is it confirmed they did know about the investigation when the trade was made? I thought with some of this league investigation/player union stuff teams were kept in the dark until they finished the investigation/handed out punishments. If a player is investigated and found innocent they don’t want teams punishing players ahead of them.

You are making stuff up. They would have obviously known about the league investigation but there is no indication they knew about an FBI investigation until this year when everything blew up.
