There’s nothing free market about basketball contracts. (1) They negotiated with the owners 50% of revenue as salary. (2) Barriers to entry into the league are basically sky high. Ask yourself: when was the last expansion team? The fewer the teams, the more each player gets paid.
I believe in the Free Market too but, “You get what you pay for.”. We pay millions of dollars to people who throw a ball around in ways that entertain us, yet we refuse to pay people who teach our children a liveable wage. And people wonder why things are going to shit. Bread and circuses only worked so long before Rome fell.

There’s the whole NBA actually having a strong union that is willing to collectively go on strike too so they aren’t getting ripped off. Imagine if NBA union was all just split apart into different teams with some having a union and others not. Their deals would not be as good, and they wouldn’t be able to agree on whether to go on strike or not to put themselves in a stronger position to bargain. Without the strong union NBA players have they’d be getting swindled like UFC fighters.
They are the stars of the show. A show that creates thousands and thousands of jobs in so many different industries. Is what it is.

Heat get 50k per player for the loss tonight. Losers of the next round get 100k+, runners up get 220K, winners get 500k+. That’s individual player payout. I’m sure that means a lot, particularly to the guys on smaller contracts.
