Mavs quietly cooking with this kid. The TO numbers are the real story here - rookie point guards usually hemorrhage turnovers while they figure shit out, but Nembhard looks composed as hell. 68% from three won’t last obviously but the decision-making and court vision are legit.

Yeah and the competition he’s faced as a starter has been quite good. He’s still performed extremely well. He had a two game stretch of 23 assists in both with just one turnover in total. Made the janky Mavs offence flow so smoothly.

Sam Vecnie was calling him the best pg in the draft. Unfortunately he’s only 5’11 unlike his brother(6’4). NBA teams have really shied away from small PGs in recent years. Even Sam had him undrafted in his mocks despite calling him the best PG. He looks really impressive out there.

Offense is much worse with AD at PF. Cooper is able to attack the basket and get to his spots in the paint because AD is at the 5.

Also the Nembhard + AD empty drag screen has been very effective and only possible with other wings to open space from the weak side of the floor.

I’m done with Lively or Gafford, trade either one of them. AD isn’t stupid hopefully he sees how much better the offense is with him at the 5.

I haven’t watched much Mavs so I’ve missed him on the defensive end. I imagine he can be a pest and hound ball carriers and it’s not the end of the world if he gets beat because they have Flagg and AD to protect the rim on drivers. I’d be curious to be filled in on what has made him good on that end so far.

He has not been “good” as a defender. He has significantly improved at running the schemes that the Mavs are running to the point that it becomes “passable” since he runs the offense so well and the other mavs can cover for him, but he will need a lot of work to get to the level of the small but pesky defender archetype. I love his game though and think he will have a long career as a backup PG/spot starter. If he was five inches taller, he would be better than his brother imo.

He wasn’t available in the draft per Marc Steins report. Mavs guaranteed his agent they’d give Nembhard a two-way contract while they tried to trade for a 2nd round pick. Nembhard’s agent told teams not to take him since they didn’t want him to get drafted 2nd round and get cut.

Idk how any of that is legal but I’ll take it as a Mavs fan.

No team is giving an undersized point guard a 2nd round exception. Also there were only 10-11 of them were given to 2nd rounders this season. Of them the shortest players were Lanier and Richard. Detroit is stuck with Lanier through next season where his contract will count against their cap. That could potentially be a big issue because of the 2nd apron if they are trying to compete.

Two-ways are way less riskier and you can just sign pro rated deals if you want to keep the rookie later in the season. Nembhard was likely only ever offered a two-way.

Easier said than done when Mavs don’t control their own pick 2027-2030. You can get some assets to build around in future, but chances of being competitive early on are slim when you trade the likes of AD, Kyrie, PJ, Gafford. I for one don’t love the idea of giving Charlotte and OKC top 5-7 picks next two years lol.

They don’t need to control their own picks to tank successfully. AD, Kyrie, PJ, Naji, and Gafford all have value, Klay might even be able to be traded for something although probably not much. They could certainly get some solid young guys/firsts back from those players.

Maybe make noise with a healthy Kyrie. And when we regain control of our picks, Coop will be what - 21, maybe 22 years old? Man, we really wasted his prime.

I’m ok with the prospect of trading AD or someone like Naji (whose value will probably never be higher than this year’s trade deadline due to his ability/production on that contract). But the reality is that you have to get serious value in return, or it’s just not worth it. This sub treats AD like he’s worth less than dirt. While you’re not getting Luka back for him, you should still receive a trade package worthy of his caliber of player (t-15 in the league). And if that isn’t on offer, you let him play out his contract.

Everyone is convinced that the only way to win is to bottom out and tank. You do that to get Cooper Flagg. We lucked our way right past that part of the equation.

I agree the Mavs will be pretty solid if Kyrie comes back before play offs and balls out. That being said the odds of winning this year or the next is very low, and in 2 years AD and Kyrie will both be worth significantly less. The only reason to not sell is if you think they can win a ring in the next few years. Betting your future on that isn’t the best idea in my opinion, they are going to have a tough time rebuilding if they don’t get assets while their guys are worth a lot more.

The only reason not to sell is that their value (at least as judged by the esteemed members of this sub) is hot dog water.

If a team offered fair value for AD, I would absolutely trade him.

There’s zero doubt in my mind that there is more value to retaining a winning culture than tanking just for the sake of it (which any post-26 tanking is, bar any trade that returned us our own picks). Losing cultures are infectious. It’s easy to catch and it’s hard to shake.

Yeah Dallas didn’t have to trade AD and Kyrie if they can’t win a title with them in next two years. It all depends on what they get back. They absolutely can’t bottom out because they don’t have pick control, so you may as well ride them out if return sucks and then build around Flagg when they age out.
