Jokic’s arms are visibly cut up from other people’s nails almost every game.
Not generally this bad, but it’s a reoccurring issue.
I remember watching Kevin Love on the Wolves when he used to post up a lot. Always had scratches on his arms after every game. Posting up and grabbing boards comes at a cost.

I’m guessing everyone gets it to some degree in the paint but it certainly shows more in him. The contrast on white guys might just be more visible. Kevin Love used to get cut up pretty good.

It was common for old generations to intentionally not clip their nails or shower/brush teeth to disturb the other teams. I think early 2000s and 90s teams did these kind of things a lot.

Nails that long definitely have nasty gunk beneath them.
They don’t if you clean them properly. I have long nails on my right hand for playing guitar and it’s not an issue because I’m not nasty and wash my hands often.
They’re playing basketball, not guitar.
Even if they have great hygiene prior to games, unless they’re vigorously washing their hands after every play, their nails will accumulate gunk from the ball, the court, the seats, their drinks, their jerseys, other players and so on and so on. They will also open wounds like the video for that gunk and dirt and duttiness to get into.
Simply their nails will have more gunk under them and open more cuts than players who have basic nail hygiene and safety required for the sport. They should trim and file their nails, at a bare minimum.
Also, long nails are simply dirtier than short nails and require much more upkeep to be remotley hygenic. They trap more dirt, germs (like E. coli and Staph), and moisture than short nails and require daily scrubs with nails brush or similar on top of the standard regular washing with soap and water to not be dirty.
I think short nails should be a requirement for any contact sport. I’m just trying to push back on what seems like a narrative that long nails necessarily mean they’re dirty. I’ve heard that take one too many times.
