Deandre Ayton on his defensive effort: “I’mma be real: I don’t know what (JJ) talking about. I don’t know. I just do what I have to do. I thank him but I ain’t know what I did out there”
i can’t tell if he’s trying to give JJ credit for the rotations and defensive sets or if he genuinely doesn’t know how good he played lmao
It’s just an out of body experience to him
Bro just goes into a fugue state
Vulfpeck?
Dope song , might be whooshed here but the saying is much older than the song.
Damn hadn’t thought about them in a long while. They have good stuff.
You should check out Vulfmon as well. It’s Jack’s side project, which feels like Vulfpeck but a little bit weirder and more experimental.
are we finding the insane overlap of NBA and funk fans…
That’s not that insane of a crossover though,
maybe in canada, most people have not even heard of vulfpeck in most of the US
That would explain soooo much about his career tbh
Being John Malovich DeAndre Ayton
He just sees blue
He saw the blue flame
That wasn’t Deandre. Josh was driving.

Yeah imagine getting fed the ball by two sorry guards like checks notes Chris Paul and Devin Booker. Must have been terrible having to do that and going to the finals.
Averaged more ppg in PHX than he has in LA btw
Being fed the ball by Devin Booker and Chris Paul while going to the finals only to be eaten alive by Giannis and then get his bag of cash and then completely disappear.
Your take is weak.
There’s never been a good take involving this checks notes line redditors love to pull out
Is he trolling like when they asked him if he was happy lol
JJ: Thank you for saving us
DA: Im literally just Deandre Ayton
My guess is he’s learned NBA defensive habits through years of repitition though no one has told him the terminology or pointed out the specific rotations to him. So when JJ uses the terminology DeAndre knows what to do even though he doesn’t know what JJ means.
Like someone instantly recognizing a note in a song doesn’t fit, but doesn’t know what the word “discordant” means.
DeAndre is a basketball savant?
He could be but sometimes people just pick up on things. For example, I’m a terrible player, but I could run pick-and-roll and pick-and-pop pretty well at 13 after a year of playing basketball because I instinctively knew how to hang dribble and side step dribble even though no coach had ever told me to use it.
You could’ve been a basketball savant. But you stopped growing at 5’8”. What a shame. You could’ve been a star!
Haha no. I just picked up on some parts of the game better than others
No! I believe in you! Maybe if you got leg lengthening surgery… But then you’d have t rex arms like Desmond Bane.
I’m a similar way. Whenever I play with friends, I am insane at disrupting passing lanes. I am ass at everything else, but by god do I block passes.
The whole nation of the Philippines 🥲
Julian Newman’s arc
More like Cole Trickle in Days of Thunder
More like Coale in True Detective
nah he just does it to make money. He’s a basketball Servant
You see this sort of thing with musicians all the time - people claiming not to know ‘music theory’, or that some famous, successful musician doesn’t know music theory (Paul McCartney, Thom Yorke etc.), when really what they mean is they don’t know all the terms that an academic would give to the sounds that they’re familiar with (but still know quite a lot of the terms), or that they couldn’t sight-read a piece of music (which is sort of like saying someone from 300yrs ago who couldn’t read didn’t know English).
Avenged Sevenfold’s guitarists are the same way.
The lead guitarist has classical training, and will talk about his musical theories, and will write some amazing songs IMHO.
Their rhythm guitarist will follow along, and play everything perfectly, but not be able to tell you which notes he’s playing, just the ones that sound right.
There seems to be a lot of bands where one guitarist has classical training, and the other is self taught, and it seems to work well together.
Essentially, it’s like someone who learned to play an instrument by ear instead of by studying
This comment started on of my favorite Reddit reply sessions ever lol
Dissonance?
Discordant is broader. Like if it’s the wrong kind of dissonance but you still want dissonance (e.g. major 7th vs minor)
Today I learned. Huh. Thank you. I knew about dissonance, did not know about discordant. This is why I love Reddit.
So when JJ uses the terminology DeAndre knows what to do even though he doesn’t know what JJ means.
This sentence is as amusing as it is reassuring
You could just say something about intuition instead of rattling on like you’re trying to reach the minimum word count for an essay.
I want to think he doesn’t want to reveal anything the team is trying to do out there.
I’m rolling with this.
Yeah like someone spilled the beans before and JJ chewed the whole team out and we are seeing Ayton have a flashback and default to “idk what the fuck yall talking about but I’m not getting in trouble for sharing our game plan secrets”
I think he’s trying to downplay it and act like it’s just a regular night for him
I could be wrong here. But I -almost- read it as annoyance, like “why is he praising me i do this same thing every night”. Just spitballing
Yah I got that too.. which, as someone who watched him a lot on the blazers, is hilarious
He’s unconscious when he’s on the court
LeBron has perfect memory of everything that happens in the game, while Ayton has no memory of what happened
He doesn’t know man. Take it up with JJ.
IMO he might have felt he didn’t well but from JJ perspective he did.
Something like he felt he didn’t play up to the standard he set himself in his mind but in reality what he did was actually great. Being a bit hard on himself maybe.
When I used to play in school sometimes coach scolded me and there was times when he scolded the whole team but told Im the only one hustling.. But I always did as much as I could and put maximum effort.
I think it just depends on situation and who you are up against If you are a better player than your opposition things go your way and sometimes you just make the right guesses and get in the right positions lol
He just doesn’t feel like he did anything out of the ordinary. Just did his job and it worked.
Knowing enough about the problems to get an A but having no idea what the class is actually about
how “well” he played
Probably doesn’t remember. When super stressed like physical exercise the hippocampus doesn’t create new memories cause the bodies focusing on movement so much. Probably got flashes of what happened…
I think he’s downplaying the credit like saying he thought he didn’t perform as well as he wanted or something like that
[removed]
Bro’s getting love bombed by JJ and doesn’t know how to handle it lmao
What a coach loving you does to a mfer.
Cue the “It’s not your fault” scene from Good Will Hunting 🥹
It’s too early for the feels man. Now I gotta go on YouTube and watch this scene
Didnt him and monty have beef
Yeah, there was a rumor Monty blamed him for the finals loss which would be absolute shit because it was DA’s second season and our backup got knocked out.
And the fact we dont make it that far without DA lifting his game higher than anyone else on the squad. There is a reason CP3 originally called him their playoff MVP.
He sacrificed touches and role that season for the betterment of the team, then the franchise used that season against him when it came time that offseason for an extension.
That teaches a guy that they need to look out for theirs
Yeah, it makes sense why he kinda tuned out with that context. Pretty much like, if playing my role and putting in effort gets me this response, then I’m not even gonna put in that much effort next time.
Preached it for years with the Suns fanbase.
All they did was hyperfixate on his flaws. When a fanbase hates you, a coach hates you, your star player (Booker) doesnt pass to you, your management says youre not worth an extension (they never even offered him one lower than the max) and make you find a contract in RFA, how do you expect the guy to be all in 100%? He signed with the Pacers and Suns made him come back haha
The downhill spiral of the Suns finals team was not giving DA his max extension post finals loss. I will die on that hill. Everything went weird from there. The following season DA had a great opening game and Monty commented “it didnt feel like us” when asked about the good offence.
DA 100% has his issues with mental resilience and playing with sustained effort, but we alienated our youngest player when we should have been building him up, like the Lakers are now.
I totally forgot about that Pacers signing saga. Man that feels like a long time ago now.
This the Warriors and Kuminga?
Kuminga is a net negative every single year of his career, and has never been positive even individually on offense or defense. He hasn’t improved since being drafted. Ayton isn’t close to the same situation.
And that’s despite Kuminga not being as good as Ayton
I still rate Ayton highly as an effective and impactful player. I didnt focus on his flaws, I just felt the system wasnt being catered to him as much as it should have been, especially as a #1 pick who had such a historic rookie year. His offensive and defensive field goal %s were always near to elite level, he could be an anchor on defence and very mobile for his size.
Monty, for all his terrific accomplishments, kept trying to beat him down with “tough love” like a ambitious father goes at his son, and it caused Ayton to withdraw. The FO didnt take him seriously as a winning piece of the formula that got us to the finals.
The Valley Oop will always be one of the best plays I have ever witnessed live.
You just gave me a nuanced and detailed perspective of DA that I have not gotten from watching years of analysts talk about him. His career makes a lot more sense with this context - thanks!
I literally remember Jokic talking about how ayton was his worst defensive match-up that year the nugs lost to the suns. Ayton was making him work. Then after being told it was your fault mudt have just made him stop caring
I’m glad ppl are catching on to the truth
Not everyone has a strong mental. Some people fo need to be given positive affirmation to be able to perform. Always felt that way about ayton, as well as simmons to a lesser degree. Getting thrown under the bus makes some people regress or even vanish due to it. Theyre humans as well
Exactly, it was crazy to me seeing Suns fans not acknowledging the human side of his situation then acting like he was always trash.
I know this is the norm, but man it feels today’s league is more cutthroat towards players. You got Luka and Ayton being treated like dogshit by the teams who drafted them.
Monty didn’t do himself any favors bringing Detroit to a historic tank, just to bounce back when they canned his ass. Fack that guy
I’m pretty sure he said before that season that he had no interest or desire to coach that year and wanted to take some time off and then Detroit threw him the highest paid coaching contract ever lol.
To be fair to Monty, his wife was supposedly going through cancer and he wanted to be there for her. But when the Pistons offered him a stupid amount of money, couldn’t say “no” to that. He absolutely scapegoated and alienated Ayton though.
Didn’t his wife die in a car accident?
His first wife did if I remember correctly.
I mean Giannis did cook his ass in the finals.
Dude was also not a true bruising center. He looks so much bigger and heavier now. Expecting him to hold down the paint like a prime Shaq at 225 was epic silly.
Honestly it did sound to me like he was immediately defensive and then relaxed a little but when the reporter said “that you played well defensively”. Reliving some old stuff.
monty is fraudulent, it’s no wonder him and fraud paul got along
AR and Bron talked about occasionally tuning JJ out when he’s mad. So I suspect Lakers are so used to JJ chewing them out, that players developed an automatic response as soon as they hear his name.
This guy is the most unintentionally funny guy out there
NBA Jameis Winston
Without the SA
He is in the lakers so im scared
*on
For sure lmao
No lie, he would’ve been liked way sooner in phx if he simply just spoke? I haven’t heard him be vocal until the lakers roster.
He’s got an adorable Jamaican Forrest Gump thing happening.
I was unclear what to expect given his tenure with the Suns and subsequent rep, but he’s been great!
Seems happy and engaged and enjoying doing his job.
Kinda stunned by some of the defensive plays, and he doesn’t seem bashful about banging for boards.
Props to DA!
Bahamian*
As mychal Thompson reminded us many times during this last game
The conjoined twin of Pychal Thompson?
Dude is a beast when he’s engaged, but most of his career he has been horribly inconsistent because he gets pouty and disinterested and selfish empty stats whenever he doesn’t get fed. Really disliked him as a player.
Now that he’s consistently trying and locked in, looks like all NBA. Though note he’s playing pretty low minute total.
Lowest minutes (29.5), points (15.3), rebounds (8.8), and assists of his career (0.9)… which is a great example of why “counting stats” can be so misleading.
He’s shooting at an eye watering .706 efg and TS of .710. And of course playing great D.
Will never really like him or root for him though. If I were a LAL fan I’m sure I’d join his bandwagon.
Perhaps that is the basis of this answer from him. He doesn’t know how JJ does it but he manages to make his defensive play easy. He probably was frustrated with other coaches as he can’t understand what they need him to do but with JJ it feels easy.
I’m in stitches every time he talks.
JJ is controlling him like a 2K player from the bench.
“…okay” lmao
Me favorite part
Ayton reminds me of Ron Artest a lot
What was that comment he gave to Stephen Jackson after Malice at the palace?
Something like “man, do you think we’re gonna get suspended?”
“Motherfucker we’ll be lucky if we keep our jobs!”
Was even funnier and more understated than that. Apparently he said, “Do you think we’re going to get in trouble?”
I don’t know.
He’s such an airhead sometimes it’s fucking hilarious
Attempting to successfully interview Dominayton is like trying to navigate a vast, ice-covered driveway in order to play a basketball game
Might as well stay home at that point!
Has he always been this funny?
Yea lol he was always my favorite interview to listen to when he was in the suns
He’s just playing based on vibes and what the energy of the universe tells him to do lol
Honestly I’m kind of upset at fans from his former teams for giving me a bad impression of him.
Nobody has ever said that he wasn’t likable. Most fans of his former teams like the guy.
It’s the fact that he’s so prone to long stretches of uninspired, unmotivated, selfish basketball that makes him so frustrating. Kinda like a Kawhi that never bothered to reach his peak. It’s so clear how talented he is. But he’s just been coasting and disengaged for 75% of games in his career.
JJ doing jedi mind control on him to get him to his spots lmao
I don’t know. I play ball. I stop ball. I grab ball. I don’t know.
strange fella
JJ basically joysticking DA is probably the best thing for him😭
Phrasing!
I think what he meant to say was: JJ was beating him off, screens and playing with his cock. Sure attitude? But JJ loves to give a hand. Job done.
So JJ controlling him during the game. Got it
I got a podcaster controlling me,
Now let me sum it up,
It was a strange set of circumstances
wtf is wrong with this guy LMAO
That’s my dominayton
As long as he keeps putting up 15⁄10 with solid defense who cares
Artistic.
Ron Artistic
It just sounds like he was frustrated about something to do with his own defense today
Feels relatable.
Have had times when I was beating myself up for stuff and totally forgot about all the wins that I collected in the regular course of business.
Might be some frustrations coming out for getting criticized for inconsistent defensive effort throughout his career.
Suns fans especially really hated the guy at times. Sometimes it was kind of deserved, sometimes not but it was pretty excessive
I think Ayton is confused. Because he’s used to carrying a load and getting criticized. As a Laker he says he’s just doing what they want him to do. Which is basically nothing in relation to his prior roles and probably kept pretty simple.
So if anything he’s doing less and getting more praise. Which is hard for him to understand but makes sense for coaches / analytics nerds.
lolwut?
This guy has been amazing for us.
The Dunno Ayton about what I’m doing.
JediJedi Redick with the brainwashing before interviews
Now there’s two of them. This is getting out of hand.
I think he understood the whole time. He just wasn’t happy with his d. And JJ complementing him when he thought he was shite and he let us know. Honestly I think this guy got scapegoated in Phoenix and Portland. He won playoff series with the Suns and they acted like it was all Booker and they coach. And something weird happened with the Blazers. Some kind of personal stuff that carried over to the floor ??? He seems like a great guy and pretty damn good big. We’ll see how his personal season play out. I’m thinking as long as he’s given a chance to really play and contribute he’ll be happy off of the court too. Lastly he seems to really care so far. I’m loving this guy on the team.
Rodman-esque
Just a friendly goofy giant this guy
smoke weed every day
“too many coconuts …”
Strange
Ayton is the heart and soul of the Lakers
Why is he acting like JJ Reddick is his cult leader and he’s scared?? 😭 what is this..
I don’t know. We talking about I don’t know. Not the game. I don’t know. We talking about I don’t know. I don’t know
My kids when I ask them anything.
Blazers fans, as an NBA fan I want to understand. How much better has Deandre Ayton been on defense compared to your time with him? What’s been the most glaring difference?
Is he interviewed after every game now?!
There’s always players after every game that have media availability. Said interviews don’t get posted here outside of certain teams though. You can generally find post game interviews on YouTube for whatever team you follow
Quickly becoming the Jameis Winston of the NBA lol
The more I watch the post game interviews, the more I understand why nobody put a ton of microphones in front of this guy. He’s hilarious to listen to, but man oh man is there a lot of empty space between those ears.
Lmaooo it’s him putting his hands up and saying, “look ima be real” bruh was like aye, I don’t know what’s what but my coach said I played good so thanks?
Bruh is hilarious on accident.
Hahahaha 🤣 he’s like “I did my job. We won. Stop making it confusing”
Is this guy the Jameis Winston of NBA?
I hope not for obvious reasons
Cracked me up not afraid to get awkward with interviewer dangling JJ mentioning his effort with no other details instead of asking a real question directly
I feel like he was responding at first to the assumption that JJ said something negative about his defense… but then when the reporter said that reddick said ayton played well, ayton was already ticked off a bit
Big fan of Ayton this year.
Fk lol. Is it a good thing that he’s physically blessed enough to just wing it or bad that he has no idea about the game plan. Or it might just be him deflecting the interview for reasons
Lmao this will end well.
He’s a strange guy lol. He seems happy and like he’s having fun again though and I like that for him. Playing well too
One of my favorite storylines this season, love this guy
It’s like at the gym when the person at the front desk says “have a good workout” and you say “thanks, you too”
Ayton is like the worst player to interview hahah
Best. You misspelled best
He’s funny. He always give good sound bites. But he’s not rude or annoying.
The Ilya Bryzgalov of the NBA
Ball IQ matters
Don’t worry Deandre, one bad game & the Lakers fans will turn on you. Two bad games, I’d suggest you get out of town for a few days.
Lots of meme potential with this clip
“I ain’t know”
Hopefully this isn’t the fall of Ayton. He’s playing good for the lakers but it didn’t work with other teams for a reason.
Why are there so many Ayton interviews posted lol
his interviews have become legendary i just laugh everytime he is so nonchalant and funny
I don’t know. I don’t know.
I did not realize how much I want interviews like this. Fucking legendary
“Give me credit when it’s the off season, I still gotta improve” is what I heard
Embiid sucked. So he did do something right
Bless his heart.
The mindset of a bust.
RussellWestbrookWHAT.mov
Least he knows he’s a moron I give him credit
This is super clarifying to why he is the way he is
He needs to figure out what he did so he can keep doing it 🤷🏾
This man was so mistreated by other teams he’s jus disassociates from the euphoria of having LeBron and Luka
How about English ?
What is up with this quote using “I’mma”? I listened and that part isn’t even clear.
Literally the first word he says in this video
I always loved DA lmao funny AF.
