Cam started out in college as a zero star recruit playing for Loyola, ultimately ending his college career as a national champion at UConn and getting drafted.

And Pat’s is even crazier, playing one year of college ball as a grad student after an incredible college lacrosse career (one of the best ever), then working his way undrafted up the ranks through the G-League.

I know people meme Pat because of how he looks but the Warriors offense has looked better with him in the game for two seasons now. At worst he’s a very good court general and this year he’s really improved his confidence on offense and that’s showing how deep his bag is. He’s honestly a great backup PG and honestly a good option to start instead of Podz with the core unit as well. Great guard to pair with Steph.

The main issue with Podz is that his entire game revolves around a set of “moves” that he practiced, but he doesn’t really know why he does them in the first place. Just watch how many times he will pump fake, drive to the middle of the paint and then get trapped so he has to pass a grenade to the perimeter. Every single game he will do this exact sequence. It’s habitual and he doesn’t know why he keeps doing it.

The opposite is true for Pat. Pat is looking for an opening in the defense and that’s it. He doesn’t have a pre-determined “do this move, then this fake, then x,y,z”. The overall effect is that when Podz is on the floor you are watching Podz go through his entire “routine”. It stagnates the offense. When Pat is on the floor, the defense needs to make sure there is no opening otherwise he will exploit it.

There needs to be a stat on how many 24-second violations the Warriors commit when Podz is on the floor. He burns the clock just doing his routine that does nothing.

Podz: Dribbles the air out of the ball at the top of the key. Drives in for a contested and harder 2. Misses, but somehow warriors get rebound. Relocates to corner and gets ball back. Airballs the 3. Meanwhile Jimmy is just completely open the entire time for a catch and shoot 3. And he’s been making those too.

This sequence was a week ago.

It’s hilarious to think about given that Podz was yelling at Pat one time for not passing him the ball, but whenever Podz does get the ball without immediately shooting or passing, stuff like this happens.

I actually like how you explain the work/mindset of Podz vs Pat. It also help that Pat doesn’t play high level basketball until his 5th year in College when he WALKED ON to the basketball team, so he doesn’t have the “set moves”, he’s more like find things that works and make it work. Sometimes playing a different sport helps a lot. The lacrosse physicality sometimes gets him into trouble though. Usually you can’t smack people around in basketball.

The one skill that I think Pat could really capitalize on is the fadeaway elbow jumper. CP3 has this move perfected and I think it’s a perfect fit for the way Pat approaches the paint off of a pick. It’s good for his scoring, but it will also make the other players become a lob threat.

playing specifically lacrosse helps even moreso. Basketball was invented by Naismith as a way for his lacrosse players to practice the fundamentals in the offseason.

The halfcourt of basketball is a simulacrum of lacrosse, and vice versa. Manipulating the defense, reacting to help/slides, moving the ball to an open shooter while pressured, and finishing through contact are exactly what Pat excelled at on the Lacrosse field.

Helps that he is extremely skilled at Basketball too.
