To be fair that’s more of a coaching issue. Podz has been useful for us for 2 years, but this year Kerr is using him as a lead ball handler and floor general when he’s awful at those things. He plays much better when he’s a secondary ball handler with limited responsibilities as a playmaker, grabs boards, shoots from the corners, and draws fouls.

He fulfills a completely different role than Pat, and idk why Kerr prefers Podz fill in for Pat when they have completely different strengths.

I don’t think that’s the case because we don’t see him do the same with other players unless it’s out of necessity (e.g. Moses HAS to be played at the 3 when Steph and Brandin).

He knows Pat is a better playmaker and floor general than Brandin, and he’s incorporated both of them in some of his lineups that do well with Pat at the 1. It’s possible he wants Brandin to work on his passing and playmaking, but that comes with some costs and few benefits in the short term. Exposing him also doesn’t help build up confidence and it ultimately worsens his trade value (if the FO is looking to trade him).

What’s perplexing is that Kerr is playing Brandin A LOT more than most teams would reasonably play him at the PG, which reminds me of Pops using Sochan at PG. His approach with Brandin has left me confused, and I don’t see how we benefit from it when Podz is much better when he’s free to roam the floor looking for second chance opportunities and corner 3s.

The simplest inbound play is to get your C to screen for a guard running downwards towards the basket, then get your C to pop out and receive the ball. The defender defending the C always have to sag off the C to help on the guard cutting, so the C is always open. That last inbound play kerr drew up was shit. 4 players standing at 4 full corners of the court all running to the middle with 0 space. What did they expect?

We really needed those 3 to do something, but they couldn’t contribute. Thankfully Kerr benched all 3 of them, and he should do that more often. He tends to play some guys throughout a game because he trusts them, even when they’re playing awful, but that makes comebacks like the one tonight impossible. If Brandin has a hot hand then play him more, if he’s ass then bench him. If JK can’t get any penetration, then sub in Gui to handle some of the dirty work that JK won’t do.

I don’t think that’s the right approach to take with his season. I wouldn’t say it’s bad, but it is odd due to Kerr’s coaching. Kerr is using him as a lead ball handler and floor general when he’s awful at those things, while playing him 20-30 minutes a night. It’s a recipe for disaster when we have Pat to fill the role.

Podz should ideally be a secondary ball handler because we need him roam the floor to provide second chance opportunities by boxing out and rebounding, and we also need him to roam offball to find some space to shoot.

Shout out to my girlfriend who turned the TV off, because she thought we were leaving, as the final shot was going up before it was tipped, causing me to miss that, then turning it on just in time to see Maxey jump at Meltons layup but she decided to try and rewind the TV and made me miss that too.
