He was at one point a great coach because he started the three-point era of the league. He was also the first to commit to a 5-man switching defense. Issue is other teams copied him and figured it out. He hasn’t been relevant since.

Nah, the largest acceleration in them wasn’t just “savvy forward thinking coaches letting their guys take more 3’s,” it was…seeing two dudes get drafted onto the same team one of which is undisputedly the best shooter in basketball history and dominates every 3 point stat like Wilt dominates any random statline record. The second of which can be argued as high as 2nd in raw skill but is at worst a top 5 shooter all time.

It wasn’t only that, Kerr put them on the three point line. The plays he ran for those two guys played to their strengths. It was because of those plays that they grew into the players they became. Other teams were not playing with 4-out. Now we have 5-out, but at the time there were no teams with only a center inside. Magic kind of did it before, but not at the level Warriors did. He allowed them to take as many threes as they did too. If they werent successful that would have been suicide for a young coach.

Because Kerr basically built the Warriors to perform like they do with a combination of the Triangle and the D’Antoni Suns. This is why Draymond controls the offense (like the triangle) to whoever is open and Curry is always working to get open for a good shot (like the Suns) rather than operate like other teams where the point guard controls the offense and will facilitate rather than score.

Curry Klay Draymond and Kerr were a perfect fit.
