The Mavericks announced Thursday that Lively (foot) has no timetable for a return.Lively is getting multiple opinions regarding the swelling and discomfort in his right foot. It sounds like the third-year center can be labeled as week-to-week until the next steps in his recovery are determined. This will be his 86th missed game is hard to see a path of success with lively if these availability issues aren’t solved.

Mavs medical staff wanted Luka to come back sooner. (at least allegedly all the stuff after the trade was all PR) He disagreed because he felt it was detrimental to rush back and his own doctors didn’t want him to. Allegedly that was a factor in trading him (which is stupid)

Nico’s training staff and doctors didn’t figure out he had a broken foot for like a week. Went through practice trying to return, until they finally found out he had a broken foot. Said he didn’t need surgery, just tme off and rehab. Came back at the end of the season and looked bad. Then it turns out he needed offseason surgery. I know he’s had injury concerns dating back to Duke, but Nico’s incompetence might end up ruining this kid’s career.

Yes, there are 26 bones in each foot, many of them very small. Wrist/hand, and foot fractures can be difficult to diagnose because there are so many small bones, and a person cannot necessarily self-diagnose pain from a fracture from other pain.

Lively was diagnosed with a ankle sprain. The unqualified athletic trainer that Nico hired, after firing long time Mavs athletic trainer, said he could return in days and put him through intense workouts in order to get him ready to return, This is despite the director of player health and performance being against it. Eventually they sent Lively out for a CT scan and turned out he actually had a stress facture in his foot. These same guys were adamant the Luka could return in 2-3 weeks from his calf strain. Luka’s personal doctors had to step in.

Yes these guys Nico hired were a mess. The athletic trainer Nico hired turns out was not qualified for the job. It was a friend of his that he hired. It doesn’t matter whether a player is injury prone or not, the staff completely misdiagnosed his injury. So yes, this is Nico’s fault too. He fired a long time and well respected person like Casey Smith, only to hire an unqualified person
