Most teams have one player whom they focus on to be their main scorer every match.

Nuggets are currently the only team where their main offensive engine is not based on scoring.

Edit: Its the same reason why Spencer Jones and Peyton Watson both have 30 point games this season (well, 28 for Spencer). They would never get that volume in such good spots on any other team.

Its not what i was trying to say, but its definitely possible.

In a lot of cases how many points a player score is just down to how many attempts they get. Austin Reaves can drop a 50 bomb if he gets to shoot 30 FGAs per game for an entire season. Same is probably true for Chet, Ajay and JDub.

He definitely could. He just doesnt have that role in the Nuggets, his main focus is defense. Its the same reason Hartenstein doesnt score 20+ ppg. If the Thunder played around Hartenstein taking 15 FGA per game then he would score 20+ ppg.

On a normal night he’s the third or 4th offensive option for the Nuggets which limits his scoring chances. If he heats up early Jokic is more than happy to defer but that usually means he’s hit a couple early 3s to initiate Jokic changing strategy.

Heatles bosh might be the most overrated player in the history of the league. He was pretty good in Toronto (1 all nba season) but floated by on reputation all thru the heatles era and was closer to an average starter than an all-nba player during those runs. He averaged ¹⁴⁄₆ during the last 3 playoff runs with the heat and was getting outplayed by the David west and paul milsaps of the world pretty regularly.

The issue Denver has is are Brown, THJ and JV truly playable even as early as R1 in the Playoffs?

They are soaking up good minutes in the Regular Season which is a big positive, but all of those guys impact in the Playoffs recently are not good at all.

It goes under the radar, but you don’t have a back up PG. Westbrook was awesome for the Nuggegs in R1 and R2 in wins - a literal series definer.

The risk now is in this stretch is that you drop to ⁵⁄₆ without HCA. And it hasn’t looked good so far (already 5th).

They’re still the Thunder’s biggest threat, Brown was a key piece of the championship team he’s very much playable, THJ is questionable for sure. Valancunias isn’t a great defender but he can get buckets and rebound and on a second unit ²⁄₃ ain’t bad. Strawther came in and did damage against us in the playoffs.

Westbrook hurt them so bad after he helped get that game one win in OKC, one legged Aaron Gordon outplayed him, Murray, and MPJ. I agree they don’t have a great backup PG but there’s still the trade deadline and if they’re desperate might try to win now instead of hold out for a pick or free agency.

I am not saying they aren’t the 2nd best team in the West at full strength in the Regular Season. They are.

JV gets played off the floor in the Playoffs, THJ has consistently gone ice cold in the Playoffs and Brown is averaging 6pts on 49.5TS% this year.

These things are all objectively true. Even in the aggregate they are going to do nothing for Denvers Playoff hopes.

THJ last year averaged 12pts on 47TS% in the Playoffs. The year prior in Dallas 4.4pts on 49TS%. He is an active negative in the Playoffs offensively, let alone defensively.

These guys are the ‘bench’ - they are going to get enormously found out in the Playoffs.

They surely will drop in the playoffs, but its all about if they are usable and if they can be options for the playoffs.

Last year the Nuggets basically played a 7 man rotation with MPJ playing at like 60%. Westbrook added some stuff, but was an absolute liability at points as well…and he was easily the 6th man. The Nuggets haven’t had a true usable backup center since Mason Plumlee.

This year the Nuggets have a true bench rotation that won’t get absolutely killed in the playoffs. Sure, THJ could regress, but he still is someone who you have to actually cover at the 3 point line instead of mauling Jokic. He is like a fully realized version of what we hoped Strawther can be. I feel confident that even if he is inconsistent, THJ will win us a playoff game or two just through his hot shooting. We didn’t have that option last year.

Bruce Brown has regressed offensively for sure, particularly finishing close to the hoop. That said, he is a playable player in tough games and has that experience. His defense has been mostly great, and he is still a better playoff option than Jalen Pickett, who we had to use last year, and even Russ, because his defense is more solid and not reliant on getting turnovers.

Even when our bench gets found out, we now can have a rotation featuring JV, THJ, Payton Watson, and whatever mixture of Strawther, Spencer Jones pans out. OKC is still justifiably a level above, but this is easily the best depth Jokic has had since the bubble season and when healthy, this depth along with every starter leveling up (Mal, AG and Braun all look improved when healthy) may give us a better fighting chance than last year where I thought we had a 0% chance to beat OKC

We didnt have that great of the bench based off regular season performance the year when we won and this is better than that. We just need some people that come in and dont lose leads insanely quick with Jokic on the bench. That and playing to the physicality of the playoffs are the biggest checkmarks for the Nuggets. I still think Thunder should win the series but this is as good as it gets for the Nuggets

And westbrook was good energy at times but all around net negative in the grand scheme of things. If you high rolled he could be a series definer but overall Bruce is a way more stable ball handler off the bench and is a playoff riser when paired with Jokic

Also its a long season and this is basically a veteran team. We shouldnt kill ourselves just for a 2 or 3 seed because being healthy for the playoffs is all that matters and I doubt we have to go all out to stay out of the play ins

If it keeps Joker and Jamal fresh that is a huge win. But it isn’t trending that way and that is before Johnson inevitably misses some time too.

My question for the Nuggets is who is there true 6th man for the Playoffs? You may have a better 7th, 8th and 9th man - but again, Russ was seriously good in that R1 against the Clippers.

6th man would have to be Bruce or THJ. Bruce was also mediocre during the regular season back when we won but played a lot better in the playoffs thanks to Jokic. I see it less of an issue than the current Johnson being not as remotely as good as MPJ. contracts aside, hes not even close to being as good as MPJ was with shooting, finishing and rebounding and that is more concerning factor to me. I don’t think its even a wait and see if he figures it out, hes just not as physically talented as MPJ and is not making it up in other ways. The stats look good with him in the lineup but just watching him is concerning to me. MPJ when healthy would be the reason we won games in the playoffs at times and we took OKC to seven with him having a messed up shoulder and being a non factor basically.

Calling Westbrook “awesome” in the playoffs last year is a bit of a stretch. He had his moments but a lot of the series’s were spent saying things like “what is he doing?” Hell, even that one play in R1 where he hit someone (I think AG) for the game winner had every single commentator saying “OH GOD, WESTBROOK NOOOOO” before he made the right play. That type of reaction doesn’t come from an “awesome” or “literal series definer” player.

Go look at his stats in R1 against the Clippers, he was genuinely hugely impactful to getting that series win.

In R2 past G2 he was awful, I don’t disagree.

But in R1 he averaged 14/5/3 on 41.9% from 3P.

In G1 and G2 against OKC he scored 18 and 20 on 59TS% and 61TS% respectively. To say that is not hugely impactful is flat out wrong.

I mean r1 against clipper is cool but you said both r1 and r2 in which his stats were 11.7 points, 2.6 assists, and 3.7 rebounds on 39.¹⁄₃₁.⁷⁄₇₀ splits. He shot 50.5% ts and had 30 turnovers and -106 across the 13 games he played in (he missed one against the clips.) I’m one of those “stats don’t tell the most of the story” people but those are still pretty damning.

Yeah I really like this roster build the defense just relies quite a bit on AG’s health

Realistically speaking the absolute stable ceiling for a Jokic-anchored defense is probably around 8th-10th so I think it maximizes our ceiling to go all in on making our offense the best rather than nerfing the offense just to make the defense B+ tier

Even our bench offense has finally improved from the Hardaway and Jonas acquisitions

But AG’s presence is absolutely crucial for this resulting in something more like top offensively and 12th-15th defensively rather than top offensively and 25th defensively lol

Peyton Watson is really good for someone off the bench. Cam Johnson is average. Just to have a good defense your C needs to be pretty solid at rim protection and deterrence.

Our defensive help is injured though with AG and Braun and obviously that end of the floor is where he needs more help than on offense

Since AG’s injury Denver are still 1st in offensive rating but literally dead last in defense

Rather than being one of those teams that builds their entire roster to hide their offensive superstar by literally playing no negative defenders around them and nerfs their offense the goal is the 2023 model where we’re overpowered on offense and do enough on defense and AG has always been the #1 important player for the “do enough on defense” part
