[Highlight] Tyler Kolek finds Ariel Hukporti for the easy dunk under the rim, but instead Hukporti passes the ball to a corner 3 by Miles McBride, who misses. Kolek approaches him as soon as a timeout was called, telling him “DUNK THE F*CKING BALL”
bro is 7 ft tall with the mentality of a miner in moria
If he puts his fingers through the ring, the Nazgul will see him.
Gerald Green tried that, not reommended.
Random lotr references are my favorite thing
They call it a dunk… A DUNK
Simmons-esque
Man every time I see a play like this I feel my soul become a little bit more of an old head. Kolek is right. Should have yelled harder if anything.
If a dunk is, say, 97%, you’d have to make 65% on the three-point shot to score more.
Apparently NBA player shoot around 38% on average on their open three-pointers.
That percentage does change when you account for openness, the spot from where you shoot, the shooter etc.
still should have dunked it though
Yes definitely. I just did some brief google searching, and apparently Steph Curry peaked at around 44% on open 3-pointers (EDIT: On second-look it’s more like 47%). And the actual dunk success rate is around 93%, which translates to 62% on a 3-pointer. So even the best shooter in his prime alone behind the arc in a game would still be nowhere near better than a free dunk.
He might have expected there to be another defender rotating to contest after he pumped the first guy tho, so yes while it absolutely was a free dunk, if there actually was someone there to contest him then that percentage would drop (would still be high though). Also I’m sure corner 3s have higher percentages than general open 3’s, but this 3-pointer wasn’t even that open lol, although it still probably would qualify. To be clear I definitely think he should have tried to dunk it, just think it’s a lot less black and white than it seems from our birds eye view with the benefit of hindsight
while it absolutely was a free dunk, if there actually was someone there to contest him then that percentage would drop (would still be high though).
I think the 93% on dunks includes contested dunks. But even then, it converts to a super-high percentage of threes that even Steph Curry couldn’t make.
I agree that corner 3’s are probably higher, but I don’t think they’re high enough to get from 47% to 62%.
Damn fr that 93% includes contested dunks? I guess it kinda makes sense because there’s no way nba players miss 7% of their wide open dunk attempts lol and guys don’t try to dunk on people anywhere near as often as they get uncontested dunks. Small caveat, if a defender was in great position and did contest him well enough, it might not have even been considered a dunk. Agree on your other points about 3’s, I was just being a little pedantic 😂
I actually thought the percentages on wide-open threes were way higher than they were. It’s crazy that Curry’s wide-open shot percentage is basically the same as his contested shot percentage. I should double-check that since he shouldn’t have peaked at 44% wide-open if he shot 45% overall in one season, lol.
Yea same I would have expected it to be higher. And yea Steph is such a freak of nature he doesn’t even need to see the basket to know where he needs to shoot it. His spatial awareness is 1 of 1. Kon knueppel actually low key kinda has this too imo albeit to a lesser extent lol. Some guys were just born to shoot 3s 😂
Steph also apparently is super-good at golf so there probably is some hand-eye coordination and/or visuo-spatial thing going on.
I was curious so I looked it up too lol

This link has a chart that sorts by closest defender and also filters for 3 pointers. Apparently he was at 47.1% at the range they consider “open” and 48% at “wide open” in 15-16. He also hit 52% of wide open 3s in 18-19. He’s so good lol
Okay yeah that makes more sense. I’ll fix the previous post. But at least we still confirm that wide-open dunks are better.
This is why I hated trying to play 2K online. Players could hit the 3 at like 80% which basically just breaks the game of basketball.
And the community was absolutely pissed all of last year shooting like 60% saying it was unrealistic to hit such a low percentage. Great laugh the players are
thats the problem with “green bean” shot meters. people find a way to get the best release windows.
“You fucking up my assists bro”
It was a great pass.
Sad
We found the next ben simmons
National Ben Association.
Pass first player? Nah.
Only pass player
Kolek has a vet mentality as a year 2 guy. During the game against Boston, KAT blew a switch and we called a timeout. Kolek immediately went over to KAT and started yelling.
You can see some improvement this year, he just looks more comfortable being on the court. Playing more physical and his defense while not “good” has definitely gotten better.
honestly, guys like KAT need someone like Kolek yelling at him like that. If you’re gonna be on the court, fucking play. Especially when we’ve been awful on the road.
Ben Simmons:
easy dunk = pass to a teammate
And that concludes our intensive 3 month Ben Simmons basketball clinic.
Our top graduate is… (drum roll) Ariel Hukporti…come on down!
I fixed the typo in the title
As requested by u/sanfrangusto
Thank you, you’re a gentleman and a scholar.
Modern day NBA moment.
What is Hurkporti actually like as a player? I was interested in him as a prospect a few years ago because of his skill but he was so raw and allegedly not a high BBIQ.
For those that watch the Knicks what is he like? Will he stick in the league long term? He has a NBA body.
He got a rotation spot bc Mitch is resting the second night of a b2b. Huk fouled out in 12 minutes. That’s about the gist of it. Looks great at rim protection, has terrible hands, a bit clueless on the offensive side, and fouls A TON.
He looked fine on offense last year before the injury so I’m guessing Mike Brown’s system just has him in the same role as Mitch where he’s meant to focus on grabbing offensive rebounds and setting screens over any kind of scoring.
Sounds like rookie Mitch.
Bro it sounds like current Mitch. Huk has a better offensive bag than Mitch already.
Current mitch and huk are light years apart in terms of nba caliber play
He’s still very raw and gets confused sometimes on offensive sets.
But he moves great for a 7 footer and really seems to have a keen sense on defense. He’s already a plus rim protector and a solid rebounder.
Learning behind Mitchell Robinson may be a blessing as Mitch had similar issues when he first came up.
Can the Knicks afford to extend him next summer? Might another team offer him more money?
I assume part of giving him some minutes is figuring this out, but I’d be shocked if he doesn’t get a QO from the Knicks. They seem pretty invested in Huk’s development.
With Mitch’s injury history and load management the knicks are always going to need a second big man.
Does that make him restricted? Or given he was a second round pick will he be an unrestricted free agent?
Knicks in luxury tax already, right?
Passing out of a dunk is bad enough, but watch Hukporti the rest of the play. Floats in no man’s land, gets bodied by Kalk and just seems to check out of participating in the rest of the play. Not a great look.
Isn’t it true this dude can’t read?
Just like Lea Michelle yep
Oh look a 7ft Ben Simmons
cant be rocking 55 if you’re gonna play soft
Hukporti looks like he truly doesn’t give a shit while he’s out there. Jogs at half speed, just passes out of a dunk, doesn’t bother to box out, then jogs back at half speed.
Trade HIM
YOU GOT DUNK THAT SHIT
I dislike this version of basketball so much
Thought Ben Simmons was out there for a sec
Soft era bigs
Is it just me but he threw it too deep under the rim
I think your thinking about from your perspective a bit too much. He has like a 8 foot wing span and is a NBA player.
It’s just you
He def lead him off the block which made it harder but he still easily could’ve put it in after the fake
I was at the game. Wide open dunk.
