No. Tanking does nothing. We tank, AD is most likely gone. Doubtful we get a rookie like coop if we tank, that can help immediately. We play hard this year. Maybe we make the playoffs. This draft class is loaded. So we keep playing with AD, maybe make the play in and then get toasted by either the Thunder or Nuggets? Look at all of these up and coming teams. All built through the draft. This season is meaningless, and I say that as a 20 year Mavs fan. We need to start over and build around Coop and younger pieces.

Not worth it.

The expectation for me is we trade AD and roll with the tank.

Even with the loaded 2026 draft, man it’s such a gamble. Teams that hard-tank for picks tend to have a multi-year malaise. If they don’t land top 3 and have to settle for raw BPA like Wilson or Ament, that’s a really long project.

AD and Kyrie don’t with Flaggs timeline. They could still run with them for a few years but that will likely mess up the early part of Flaggs prime.

The Mavs have their 1st round pick next year. The next time they control their pick is 2031. They don’t have a 2027 1st rounder. The other 3 years they have swaps with OKC, Houston, and San Antonio; those are all likely at the end of the round.

They have to tank now to 1. Get a top 10 pick and decent player on a good draft class and 2. Acquire more picks for the next few years.

I would trade AD asap if he is playing well. Hopefully Kyrie is back soon; if so they should hold onto PJ and Gafford to help Kyrie out. If he’s healthy and playing well I think Kyrie actually has decent value since there are several championship contenders that don’t have a reliable point guard. He is so clutch in the playoffs and has finals experience.

I’m not sure either of those are good comparisons. The Cavs hadn’t sold all of their draft picks like the Mavs have, and they had reason to believe they had a chance to land LeBron in FA.

The Raptors are a Cinderella team that lucked into a trade for a top 10 player and then got lucky against the 76ers and even more lucky when all of the warriors stars dealt with major injuries.

Yes, but the next draft is the last draft the Mavs have control of their pick for a while. Tanking this season is the last chance to get a high draft pick in a stacked class while Flagg is on his first contract. This was an issue with Luka where they were too good too soon and couldn’t pair him up with another young, too-end prospect.

While trading away AD can help the fan base move on from the loss of Luka, it is also the only really way to facilitate rebuilding a rounder Cooper.

I think you’re way underestimating the impact of them not controlling their 1st rounder until 2031. They owe swaps to OKC, Houston, and San Antonio. If they don’t think they can build a championship roster with AD they need to tank for a year. Use their final 1st rounder and acquire more draft assets or young players.

If they don’t tank they will be adding late round picks around Flagg for 4 years. By that time Ad and Kyrie are likely gone as well. That leads to a team of Flagg and likely a bunch of scrubs.

Tanking is what incompetent orgs do because thats their easiest answer for acquiring talent. Mavs funnily enough built a Finals contender without any lottery picks, if you have talent you just need to make moves around the margins every year and you’ll get better. And this was after letting Brunson, a late first rounder walk.

I’m sure a lot of people will point to OKC for building a champion through tanking but its not true, having a top tier GM who can set a winning culture, scout and develop players not just in the lottery but across the board is what makes a winner. Mavs don’t need to tank, they need a culture reset in the org and competent people in FO. But its easier to tank so they might just do that.
