[Doc Rivers] on Giannis trade reports: “Giannis has never asked to be traded. Ever. I can’t make that more clear.”
His agent however…
Isnt there a CBA rule that states a player cant demand a trade?
However anyone else can infer it?
Players who publicly demand a trade are subject to a fine. So asking for trades is fine, and the punishment for doing so publicly is trivial.
The bigger CBA implication is that trades are just more risky. If a team does trade for Giannis, they better be damn sure that they will be in contention immediately & they better pray that none of their key players get hurt.
In this case:
Giving up key players of your own, potentially going into the 2nd apron, and giving up draft picks - all at the same time - combine to make a Giannis trade incredibly risky.
And even though Giannis is undoubtedly a top-3 player, risking so much for Giannis in particular has some added risk:
All said, I don’t think that Milwaukee is going to get the kind of offers for Giannis that some people are expecting. The CBA would make such a trade very risky for the suitor, and Giannis himself has a one-of-a-kind play-style that should be fully maximized with a one-of-a-kind supporting cast.
Then why would they trade him? I think that’s the crux of the problem. If anyone could offer enough he probably would have already been gone. If they aren’t getting a really nice package they may as well just keep him for now. He’s under contract for another season and those lowballs are always going to be available.
Yeah I personally don’t think that there is any logical reason for Milwaukee to trade Giannis whatsoever.
The point of the trade would be to get Giannis on a team that can afford a better backcourt, which is fucking stupid. There should just be a cap exemption for situations like that of MKE/Lillard.
___
Maybe some team would be willing to try an entirely new philosophy of building a Giannis-led team, but that could come at the cost of 1-2 years of rebuilding before contending. Considering that Giannis is a 30-year-old 7 footer who relies heavily on athleticism, IDK if it’s worth it.
Additionally, some winning teams with PnR-heavy backcourts might be hesitant to trade away assets for Giannis because of his tendencies to slip screens/picks, demand the ball for inverted PnRs, and that sort of thing. It’s one thing to pair Giannis with a good backcourt, and it’s another to pair him with a good backcourt that fits his tendencies.
MKE doesn’t have any incentive to put giannis in the best position to succeed. either they like the trade for them or they don’t
I’m not used to this in the NBA yet but yeah, you’re right. New CBA at work.
edit: “this” meaning players not having a ton of control over where they get traded to
Bro is just getting into the nba after he got bored of being an analyst for the NASA Basketball League.
just procrastinating when I should be finishing my graduate thesis
basketball is in the blood of this hoosier boy 🩸😅
Because it creates a bad look to other free agents if you hold on to players that don’t want to be there. It gets complicated, but if a player wants out, it is in the teams best interest to move them.a
Giannis isn’t a tricky fit, you fit the team around Giannis. He’s a fucking absurdly good defender and a top 25 player ever, anytime a player like him is available fit goes out the window. its giannis
Yeah it’s a lot harder than you think. He doesn’t stretch the floor himself, so his teams need a stretch 7 footer to make space. He also slips screens excessively & just generally makes things harder on guards than he needs to. It doesn’t really matter in the regular season, but it causes issues in the playoffs when opponents spend a week scouting you.
Great player, definitely top 3 in the NBA right now as far as individual play is concerned. But that doesn’t automatically put teams he’s on into contention, especially in 2025 now that the team aspect of basketball matters again in the NBA.
Youuuu get it. Many just don’t
A lot of fans understand 1v1 ball & can identify individual greatness, but don’t fully grasp the how ideal team basketball is played. (Some low basketball IQ players seemingly can’t grasp the fundamentals of team basketball either, but that’s another story…)
To be fair to NBA fans, the new CBA is forcing the issue: fundamental team basketball is back in the NBA by design. The previous 2 or 3 CBAs - which are the CBAs under which many NBA fans grew up - led to many 1 man bands & big market super teams, but made it very difficult for teams to win by any means other than brute star power.
The 2011 CBA was especially ass. The only contending “greater than the sum of parts” teams under the 2011 CBA were mostly built/developed during the final years of the 2005 CBA or before the effects of the 2011 CBA had been fully realized. Examples include the 2012-2013 Pacers, the 2012-2013 Thunder, and the 2013-2014 Spurs. After those teams fizzled out, basically every contender had LeBron, was GSW, or was an under-performing super team that couldn’t make it past LeBron or GSW.
Its kinda odd where the dominant ball players are almost all PGs or can shoot the 3 he doesnt which makes it an odd fit.
I’ve described him as a freakishly athletic, 7-foot-tall TJ McConnell but people don’t get what I’m getting at and/or are offended by the comparison.
But I don’t make the comparison to throw shade not trying to throw shade. The comparison just so happens to be on-point. Both TJM and Giannis:
It’s just that TJM is a tiny white dude who finesses in the paint while Giannis is a freakishly athletic 7 footer who just can’t be stopped in the paint.
1 foot of height & crazy athleticism is what separates an above average back-up point guard from a C/PF with guard skills who also happens to be a top-3 player in the NBA.
Yeah, ball dominant players with a huge cap hit is just really difficult to build a team around now days, especially when there’s so much talent in all the teams at the top. And this doesn’t even taking into account team construction.
If you trade for Giannis, you are going to mortgage your future for a championship within the next 3-4 years, anything else is a failure.
Having a top 5 player is great, but there is only 1 championship every year, but there are always 5 top 5 players.
Players like KD and Kawhi are much more plug and play since they can be offball, and those teams often don’t pan out.
He needs the ball for 20 seconds of the shot clock.
Beat me to it !
wheres the part giannis comes in and rubs his shoulders?
LMAO, can’t believe that’s already 13 years old.
Don’t tell Karl Malone
Talk about a pregnant comment.
he prefers they start as 12 year old comments
Oh yeah! Was that Dwight and SVG?
yea lol, i cannot believe it wasnt staged cuz the timing was perfect
Dwightmare still the funniest saga of NBA history
Especially because it all ended up being pointless anyways lol. That back surgery killed his career compared to where he was prior to
If he wasnt suck a moron him and harden mightve been the new shaq and kobe
His back was genuinely too shot, they had a good run in 2015.
But when a team like 2015 Warriors is in front of you, hard to do much more than a WCF appearance.
Doc isn’t wrong, Giannis asked his agent to make the request instead.
Guys I’m having PTSD flashbacks from 2012
Doc getting fired shouldn’t give you PTSD
I’m asking this completely sincerely, this is not a rhetorical question: would a head coach always know about such a thing? Couldn’t a player and front office keep it hush hush even from the coach while they explored it so as not to potentially disrupt team dynamics?
Some coaches might. It’s irrelevant though. Even if Doc knows he isn’t going to admit it because their job is to make sure the team is functional on the court and in the locker room and giving any fire to it is going to hurt that.
because their job is to make sure the team is functional on the court and in the locker room and giving any fire to it is going to hurt that
🤔
Depends on the coach and Doc isnt a guy they would hide it from
100% Doc would know.
Also 100% Doc would not come out and say it publicly. Deny, deny, deny until it actually happens, then claim it was a mutual decision that happened really suddenly.
And then he finally get fired and if we can pray and be hopeful, will be unemployed for the rest of time like all of Reddit.
I’m not sure, even though the situation developed fast, JJ seemingly didn’t know about the trade until day of, though he knew before the players.
Seems it can be possible but in this case, I doubt it given Giannis is making the request as opposed to a deal being made behind his back.
Doc is just saying that cuz he’s fucked when Giannis leaves
He could just resign
He’s not leaving that money on the table
A buyout is also a possibility. I think he’d much rather play golf than coach a rebuild.
True but Doc loves coaching bad rosters to 40 wins and an 8th seed
“Insert Doc gif.”
He’s the most overrated coach in NBA history. The fact he has a job and Mike Malone, Taylor Jenkins hell Mark Jackson don’t is insane.
He made a 20 year career off of one postseason run he’s truly the Jeff Fisher of basketball.
And furthermore, he also probably just gets jobs because he does the dirty work for the upper management. Nate Robinson talked about needing one game for a bonus on his contract and he gave him a DNP🤦♂️. He also nepo’d his son if we’re being nit-picky. Austin was good in high school and deserved to be drafted but shouldn’t have had a career as long as he had.
Bro Giannis needs to just cut the bullshit and announce it himself. This is getting so confusing, he can’t keep playing both sides lol.
It’s giving Ronald McDonalds vibes
How did Grimace and Hamburglar feel?
He would be fined
He does need to stop the charade tho
Uhh I am pretty sure players CAN’T publicly announce they asked to be traded because it’s against the CBA. So no, Giannis will not announce it himself. He can make it clearer in social media or in interviews that he gone, but again, why would he do that?
Both sides? It’s only shams making up stories like espn has been for the past 7 years
It feels way more real this time
People said that last time. And the time before that.
For sure, it could be another instance of that. But, he did ask for a trade according to every reporter during the off season. Knowing that + a shitty start to the year, I could definitely see it happening this time. I hope not, but we’ll see!
According to every reporter? They’re all going off one report from a guy that’s been claiming Giannis is gonna leave the past two offseasons and works for a company that says giannis was gonna leave the past 7
Watch kpjs presser after the game and see if you still feel that way
Giannis has never asked to be traded…when I’m around. When I turn my back, however, he says New York, Miami, and fucking Charlotte.
If he went to Charlotte I’d laugh my ass off☠️☠️☠️
Imagine how hotheaded he’d be having to deal with LaMelo Ball and Miles Bridges
Has he actually alluded to CHarlotte lol?
No, don’t get your hopes up lol
Awww let him dream
LOL no. Just BSing.
One of the top comments among the Giannis threads yesterday did say “Charlotte” lol just thought it was funny
No one has ever alluded to Charlotte.
you didn’t have to double down :(
Maybe he’ll go to CHA because the colors remind him of the Greek flag
LMAO
that’s what they always said
Need that RDC skit of Doc begging Giannis not to do this.
Doc desperately trying to perfectly clone humans, so there are enough Antetokounmpo brothers to fill a basketball team.
Doc isn’t even smart enough to write proper Xs and Os for his team to not be predictable you think he can make a cloning machine?!?
“Giannis…are you loyal?”
Bald man speaks
HE DEFINITELY ASKED TO BE TRADED LMAO
He didn’t ask. He demanded it.
That’s code for “Giannis is gone!”
i trust shams more than glenn
This is about to age so poorly lol
It’s cool how Bucks are going out of their way to not make Giannis look bad in this situation at all
If they piss him off, they lose Giannis AND Thanasis
He didnt ask. He demanded lmao
Shams about to triple down like he did to Bernie Lee last year
I’m not a doc fan, but what do people expect him to say here?
Doc certainly will be asking for one. Needs to find another star to attach himself to like a parasite.
Is the team talking to other teams about trading Gianni’s?
Yeah he didn’t ask, he demanded it
Someone tell Giannis we don’t care if he’s a bad guy. Let your nuts hang already bruh, nobody really blames you for wanting out
That’s what agents are for, dirty work
Truth is always somewhere in the middle.
Has Giannis had talks with the FO about his future as a Buck? For sure
Has there been a formal trade request? Probably not
Is it something the Bucks should be preparing for? Of course
Giannis was always going to be feeling out this year to figure out what was next. Plus mid season trades are harder than ever
This dude Doc is a puppet…..not a great coach. 2008 Celtics could have won with damn near any coach.
Don’t really take anything he says seriously
Giannis might be asking to get away from a Doc Rivers coached team
I truly hope that if they trade giannis that they fire this guy right after. Genuinely awful coach and can’t wait for him to be gone. I see better coached teams when I watch my 11 yr old nephew play on his baseball team.
High chance this clip will have Doc looking like a liar or a fool.
Other than Dwight or Kobe on a flip phone, superstars don’t retract their trade requests, especially If Sham or Woj reports it.
How is this clown coaching Giannis
He gone
As soon as December 15th rolls around this Doc quote is going to look very silly.
Two weeks Doc haha
This charade is getting old.
Directly from the mouth of The Destroyer of Contenders
How this guy keeps getting head coaching jobs of good teams is the biggest con job I’ve seen in decades.
Never asked for a trade to … Doc Rivers. Bruh you are tripping if you buy this crap. Giannis / his representation has DEFINITELY let the front office & ownership knows where things sit // but I definitely buy that on Docs account he’s never discussed that with Giannis.
I see Doc finally learned to lie for the good of the franchise. Better late than never.
Who even gave this guy a medical license?
GIANNIS hasn’t, but has Alex Saratsis?
“There is no war in Ba Sing Se”
Doc Rivers is the Jeff Fisher of basketball
He lies about as well as he coaches.
Hes the coach wtf is he gonna do
Adam Silver calling a hit out on Doc as we speak
Deals already done Doc
Like a steam locomotive rolling down the track
He’s gone, he’s gone
And nothing’s gonna bring him back
He’s gone
Doc said aht aht aht, y’all not about to try to stir up mess in my house because Ballmer wants y’all to change the story/focus of everybody’s attention.
“waive me”
Waive and stretch
How does Doc even have job at this point is beyond me
Who wants to tell him?
That you know of Doc
…yet
Completely unrelated to what Doc is saying here…
Who do yall think is the most political coach in the NBA?
Giannis has absolutely never asked for a trade, until he does.
Giannis: I wasn’t asking
He isn’t going to ask the coach lol
4D chess by Giannis.
He watched this team stink it up when hurt.
Pistons game wasn’t going great, trade rumors started, he gets hurt, but his guys heard he might be leaving so they up their effort and play to show Giannis what they are capable of.
All a ploy from the Greek Freak to maximize potential from the roster
Doc Rivers got a title once almost 20 years ago and he’s been failing upwards ever since.
SVG flashbacks.
