A look at the New Orleans Pelicans crowd tonight š¬
They’ve been given nothing but bad basketball throughout most of the Pelicans existence. I bet this city would support the hell out of a solid team.
People show up in droves every time the team is remotely good, and the tickets are so damn cheap. Itās a damn shame
We were that franchise not very long ago. You could get two free Wolves tickets if you bought a few cans of green beans at Cub Foods
I fucking love green beans. Win-win
Yeah but⦠canned?
I prefer canned green beans, and peas too. It’s what I grew up with. Maybe it’s a white trash thing? Can’t attest to the poster above’s relative levels of melanin or trashiness, though.
Canned beans are honestly way better for green bean casserole.
Same. I grew up poor, I donāt think I tried fresh green beans till high school or college and actually didnāt like them at first
I was born in the can, molded by it. I didn’t see the fresh until I was a man and by then it was blinding!
Mmmmm soggy salty bean segments. Un ironically love em.
Canned or fresh, I take em how I can get em
You could get a ticket for the upper level and then stroll on down to the lower level during the game. The only time Target Center would get loud was when Cherry Berry was on the line
me and my friends would go to wolves games for like 4 bucks each in the middle of the cold ass winter and we would just get high as fuck in the parking lot and fuck around in the arena.
one time we snuck into the literal media room where all the cameras and shit wereš good frickin times
Sounds like me but going to Sabres games in Buffalo. Good times is right.
there’s something nostalgic about having a terrible hometown team with cheap ass tickets. it was just so comfy.
when you’re good and have real expectations and the ticket prices are high, it just feels… idk more corporate and official
not from the depths of the dark days ofc but that reminds me of one of my favorite videos
The concept of attending a cheap nba game is so fucking foreign to me. I live in the Bay Area, and any time the Lakers are in either SF or Sacramento tickets are like 200% higher than they would be for any other team. Not to mention the insane price it is to get in to Staples (Crypto) for a game
My friends and I call the lowest period of Hawks basketball (mid 2000s) the Hawkalicious era because you could get $10 seats and a free T-shirt that said Hawkalicious on it. I still have the shirt after 20 years.
Totally worth it even though you’re forced to watch a 13 win team
They used to come to our schools handing out family pass tickets (you + 3 more). I remember going as a family to see the Hawks get blasted by the Boozer Jazz by 30 at halftime for free. Great times.
Before Curry and championships, Warriors tickets were dirt cheap, would routinely buy nosebleeds for like $10, with a can of Pepsi, and just walk down to the courtside seats. No one in Oracle Arena cared during those years. I miss it š
You really Monta had it all
I remember multiple times getting free tickets for donating blood
Got yourself the makings of a green bean casserole and a solid nightās entertainment at the ball game. Iām not even American but I know thatās a great day in the Midwest right there.
Get some tater tots and it’s a party
TIL they still have Cub Foods in Minnesota. Those were long gone in Indiana!
Been there when it was poppin (average team) and it was lit. Respect to NOLA.
I mean I was in the building for most of our recent 49 win season (which for much of the year we were pacing better than that until we faltered down the stretch). The crowds were far from droves. Like it wasnāt bad at all, but it was alarming to me that even in a year we were doing well we werenāt exactly filling the building unless a team like the Lakers came to town.
Yea honestly NOLA hasn’t really supported the Pels well.
I went this year for like their third game; just so happened I was gonna be in New Orleans, so I looked up courtside tiks knowing theyre the. cheapest in the league. Feet on the floor was like 450 so I waffled for just a little too long and missed out.
Still got amazing seats, or so I thought, because now it looks like I probably overpayed for row 17. Which was still great. Even though Zion didn’t play, which, wow, what a surprise.
Best team they had was AD, Cousins, Jrue, and Rondo. If they couldāve stayed healthy that AD and Cousins combo was so nasty. Rondo was doing his thing and Jrue was awesome. It looked like the beginning of something special for a bit
That was a squad. Rondo was feasting on the Pels.
Embarrassing the Blazers and shutting CJ and Dame down was impressive. AD and Cousins complemented each other perfectly and were absolute monsters. Rondo is just a maestro and Jrue was adding fantastic perimeter defense and doing all the little things too. That team was looking like a force to be reckoned with
Chris Paul/Tyson Chandler eras were good
They had great crowds just 2 years ago when they were worth watching
The season we went through the play-in and faced the suns 1st round, the arena was packed every night for the last 2 months. Those play-in games were the most intense in-person games Iād ever been to, the playoff series was a close second. A lot of fair weather fans maybe, but put a good team on the floor and people show up and get into it.
EXACTLY. I was there. I saw it.
HERE: This shit was only 3 years ago. When the Pels show up, we do as well: https://www.nola.com/sports/pelicans/scott-kushner-pelicans-will-have-to-figure-out-how-to-channel-home-court-energy-on/article_58a9eee2-c4d8-11ec-8ce2-db745e3eba56.html#:~:text=Follow%20Scott%20Kushner,to%20Phoenix%20tied%202%2D2.
You say that but the Kings are the epitome of mid to bad basketball for like 33 out of 40 years in Sacramento and we are at above 80% capacity at all times. We love basketball no matter how shitty we are and our prices are about 3x higher than what the Pels charge too
Kings are an exception not the rule though. Like the Lions were in Detroit. But the Pistons didn’t get the same love, arena was empty, now that the team is good again people show up.
Fans get tired of constantly bad teams and you can’t blame them for not going if this is the product they’re given.
Thatās true but your city also has about 7x more people
Also a valid point but tbh that just justifies your arena being empty even more. Small market, hopeless product on the floor, why would people fill the place up?
NOLA can produce a great sports environment, as can be seen with the Saints and LSU.
I was gonna say man, the comments above talking about $10 nosebleeds and ticket giveaways during bad eras. Buddy, we’ve been ass since time immemorial, where is this for us š„²
The Superdome sets attendance records and stadium volume for Saints games.
We are a very small population but a hugely passionate fan base if the team doesn’t suck ass and isn’t run incompetently
Whoās even available for them right now?
People
TOP men
The best men
Zion sealed into a crate and walked through a Superdome-sized warehouse
I thought I was a TOP man, turns out Iām just an over zealous bottom
https://youtu.be/Fdjf4lMmiiI?si=z5GGpQqpPnhb_Yfo
This gave me a good laugh lmao.
Imagining the coach looking at a depleted roster and then just starts selecting people from the crowd.
āUhh, alright, youāre tall, get a jersey and lets go.ā
Just sees a 6ā8 300 pounder. āYou fatso! Grab a jersey I want youā
Oh wait its just Zion in street clothes
Get me a 10 day contract
Iād love to, but since Iām nearly 50 with dodgy knees Iām currently in negotiations with the Sixers.
Give the clippers a try. They are interested in dodgy knees too
Put him in coach
Jose Alvarado
We love that tho.
Murphy, Fears, Queen
Sounds like a supergroup from the 80’s
They picked out the tallest people from the crowd to fill out the bench. Thankfully they stood out easily
dont matter, they winning vs. Wolves
Are you new to basketball? Teams coast against scrub teams and then pay attention when needed to come back and win.
Probably should have started paying attention a bit earlier then
Seems fine to me
I am relieved that this didn’t age well.
SEATTLE
That Player To Be Named Later from the baseball trades this summer.
Fear on and off the court
BI going from this to the Raptors crowd must have been a wild transition
Went from the Lakers to Pels to Raptors
Thanks, Magic
Brandon Ingram plays basketball in the National Basketball Association
The National Basketball Association is a professional sports league where players play basketball professionally
The āBasketballā in National Basketball Association stands for Basketball, the sport that is played in the National Basketball Association.
Pels fans got mad at BI for saying attendance between the two stadiums were night and day.
A losing Raptors team will always have more fans than a winning Pels team.
Just the truth š¤·
Wait the pels fans got angry with him? BOTH of them???
They had a meeting and everything. Split a small pizza and 6 boneless wings
boneless wings
As if rooting for a losing basketball team wasnāt sad enough.
Iāll eat fried chicken tossed in sauce in literally any form factor
Toronto is the biggest city in North America only behind NYC, LA and Mexico City.
It’d be a sad state of affairs if this wasn’t the case.
So 4th biggest?
Put more simply, of the 11 largest cities in North America it’s 7 places away from the smallest
For you
Whatās the population of Toronto and New Orleans? Alsoā¦walkability, density of city etc.
You think thatās it or is it you crazy guys just love raptor basketball so much?
I think itās a combination of both but the population of Toronto and the fact itās the only team in the country plays a massive role. Also recent success ofc (sorry Pels bro)
Obviously Toronto has a higher population because people love the basketball team here!
Going with both cities metropolitan population: 7mil for Toronto and 1mil for New Orleans. Then you get into expendable money, public transportation. Becomes pretty obvious why itās the way it is.
Most people did not care and understood what he meant. Toronto has like 6 million more people than New Orleans and is much more economically stable. Duh
Pels had a crowd when they were worth watching
[deleted]
I meanā¦
BIās first season in Nola they started 6-22
His third they started 3-16
And of course last year they started 4-18
Lemme guess. They start threatening New Orleans with a move to Seattle and then shake the city down for a billion dollars to build a new stadium.
A tale as old as time
Gayle has already said the team won’t move in her lifetime.
She’s 78 so could be next week or it could be 15 years.
But yeah this team sucks.
The city itself is also dealing with a budget deficit and currently debating city worker layoffs. So If it actually comes down to that they’re gone.
Meanwhile, LSU is paying for 3 football coaches right now. LOL
Football, but especially college football, is just a whole different league in the south east + Texas. Not defending how she’s ran the team or how the NBA owners regularly threaten their cities mind you.
Yep. Writing that down on my, “I Can’t Believe We Chose The Apocalypse” list.
They’ve got passionate rich boosters willing to fork over the cash. The Pelicans are just a small side business to Benson.
Now that expansion has been explicitly mentioned by silver, none of the owners are going to want any other team to move to seattle or vegas because those two spots will make them the most money via the expansion fee. If both teams cost 5 billion, thatās a $300 million dividend for every existing owner.
Just looked up tickets on gametime. For $422 you can sit COURT SIDE to the Twolves/Pelicans game.
Everyone in here is now searching when their team plays at NO and how much a flight to NO costs.
With the added bonus of getting to hang out in NOLA for a few days too. Love that city.
Lol suns pelicans coming up $380
Was just thinking that lol. I paid more for my not quite court side WNBA seats
That’s still too much.
Round trip from Detroit to NO is about $100, in the middle of holiday season… damn.
Wait are you serious?
Sorry but I have no basis of comparison. What would you expect a normal court side seat to cost elsewhere?
Multiple thousands.
For lakers, warriors on a special day it goes to 25-30k while for smaller and bad performing teams on a normal day you could get for 1-1.5k
30k??? To sit courtside for one single 2 hour game?
That’s absurd. That’s some people’s yearly salary. And there are people who spend that for a 2 hour game? And those seats are selling out every night?
What the fuck man.
If Iām in New Orleans, āgo to a basketball gameā is unfathomably low in my things to do list
If you live hereā¦it wouldnāt be
So locals don’t start every night at The Swamp until they’re drunk enough that the Rick’s girls look hot?
I’m sure some do
I did in the CP3 days. Was pretty fun but got lost walking to the arena. Some cop pulled my white ass over and said son, youāre walking toward hell, and I gladly turned right around.Ā
Lmao wait were you lost walking or driving? Did the cop pull you over while you were walking??? And does he warn everyone about the area or just the white people???
I hear he warns only white people
He saw a white boy walking in New Orleans and said, āMust save⦠at all costs!ā
I was walking. He probably doesn’t see many white folks heading in that direction and knew I was lost.
That makes no sense. Smoothie King is right next to Superdome and both are right in the city and plenty walkable. Last year it was crawling with white women and their daughters for the Eras Tour and there werenāt any reports of it being āhell.ā
I know, somehow I got south of the arena. There was all sorts of construction. I figured I would just walk around the construction and come at the arena from the west, but I guess I was headed into a danger zone.
Me when I make stuff up
Why would I make something so stupid and specific up? It was just a silly story I remembered. You think I’m striving for internet points?
Planning a trip to New Orleans and doing it when a team you want to see is in town would be how to do it.
There’s 8th row Lakers tickets for $460 each. It’s cheaper to fly there, get incredible seats, and fly back, than to sit in the lower bowl at Crypto
Mind you $460 gets you 2nd row to any other Pels game
Honestly, probably worth it to try to see LeBron before he announces his retirement. Worst case he’s out that night and you see Luka
Which one out of Saints or LSU would be higher on the list?
Have you seen the Saints
Saints suck right now, but atleast they have a passionate fan base.
The Pelicans, wellā¦..
Gotta be getting out to BR for an LSU game. SEC football environment is unmatched in American sports
Gotta be LSU so I can stare at gods gift to coaching Lane Kiffin
You could say this for like every big city
That’s actually depressing, looks like late 1Q too which is when it should be at its fullest
Unless itās Miami then most fans would be showing up in the third quarter
I live between Orlando and Miami. I wanted to get season tickets to one of them⦠I thought about driving through Miami 41 times and instantly decided on Orlando.
Between NFL and NBA, New Orleans is hurtin
It’s really not that big of a city. Even the metro area is smaller than the likes of Omaha NE or Fresno
Yeah I think it’s one of the smallest markets? People just think it’s bigger because it’s punches above it’s weight in awareness due to cultural impacts and tourism. Same with Vegas, which is also a really small market population-wise.
Tulane baby!
Ah, New Orleans. Always worth revisiting the Baron Davis storyā¦, It was so deathly quiet on Jan. 3, when a little more than 1,000 people showed up for the Golden State game, that nervous refs T’d up the teams for foul language eight times. (Hornets officials want you to know that it was snowing that night, but almost 12,000 fans braved the same snowy weather the night before to watch Duke and Davidson.) Davis burst out laughing when, as he brought the ball up the floor at the beginning of the game, a fan yelled, “We got next!” When David Wesley’s brother, sitting 25 rows up, decided to leave the game early, he just spoke in his normal voice and said, “Yo, David, I’m out. Don’t wait for me after the game, cool?”
Do you have any idea what year that game was or know anymore about it? Figure I’m not going to find a full replay online but not finding anything. Googling it and interested to try and learn more
Just did some detective work and it was January 3rd, 2002.
I looked for when David Wesley played for New Orleans and that was only 2002-2004. Then I checked when they played the Warriors at home in 2002 and it was indeed January 3rd. Then I googled if it snowed in New Orleans on January 3rd 2002 and it did.
And then I found this article.
OK, but that was in Charlotte, NC.
Okay thank you I was gonna say, snow in New Orleans is confusing and what the hell does Duke have to do with them lmao
Fuck Gayle Benson and Joe Dumars
What about Troy Weaver?
Oh yea, fuck that guy too
Do NOLA fans think that they should have kept BI and traded Zion instead?
BI wasnāt going to return. We shouldāve traded him in the 2024 off-season.
However, we made a massive mistake in putting our eggs into Zion getting back to an elite and healthy level this season. Iād trade him for expirings and not look back.
No they should have traded BI before he became an expiring
Not really- shouldāve traded them both when they had value, BI missed a bunch of games also and wanted way to much money for what he showed the Pels
Not really, we should have traded both and dropped Willie like 1-2 years ago.
Absolutely. 2022 when he led us to game 6 against the Suns with no Zion was the most fun year the Pels have had in my decade of living here. And say what you want about his ceiling, but the dude cares and is a good locker room presence.
Feel bad for them
Pelicans kings hornets nets fans deserve better
Thanks for the shout-out. Most folks barely remember we are in the league!
I mean you guys at least get mentioned Wizards didnt and I fell like they are a heap of turd ever year
I’m not sure you guys should be on this list. The Nets made the Playoffs five seasons in a row from 2019-23.
Pels have never made the playoffs more than twice in a row in their existence. The Kings haven’t made back to back playoffs runs since 2006. Charlotte, since 2002.
If you want sympathy for sustained sucking as a basketball team, you need to do a lot worse.
Wizards fans so forsaken they aren’t even worth a mention
Itās trash franchises/ownerships/GMs. How can they all be this bad for this long
This is the fault of the Pelicans front office. Donāt expect people to show up for bad product.
UNO probably have more people at their games sheesh
Iād watch from home too lol
Brave to even watch that shit on tv. Joe dumars and Troy weaver are something else.
I watch from home even when my team is good and I’m offered free tickets. Beer and food is cheaper. View is better. Bathroom breaks take less than a timeout. It’s too fuckin noisy, and I don’t mean the fans. The timeout and between quarter hype people are like nails on a chalk board. They always have a woman and a guy just shouting and music playing at the same time and it’s too much. I went to my first MLB game in like 20 years and it was a vastly more enjoyable experience, because there was so much quiet in between the baseball. My ears shouldn’t be ringing after a basketball game man
Playoffs is a whole other thing, I’ll go for the playoffs for sure.
Terrible team without āstarā player playing on a weekday
Theyāre winning by the way
The team is always terrible and without its star lol
Last year was our first season we won less than 30 games since we were the hornets lol always terrible is a stretch
They won 49 games two years ago
Yea because itās packed when star player plays
We would have more fans attending if the organization was competent and winning
I went to a Pelicans game a few years back against the Nuggets with a healthy Zion vs Jokic matchup and it was pretty packed and fans had nice energy.
I think there is just a lot zapped out of that fanbase realizing that Zion just isnāt going to work for them. That and being as bad as they are without keeping the pick is brutal.
This is all Zions fault. I still remember that video of pelicans staffers going absolute bananas when the lottery announced they had won. Now everyone feels empty and unsatisfied because of his fat injured ass.
Itās funny cause I was there last year looking at ticket prices for season packages and couldnāt believe it and some college aged kid in a suit started to do his sales tactics. Once I told him it not interested he said plenty of others can actually afford it.
I was like congrats buddy best of luck.
Wonder what that chode is doing now
Just based on this video, Iām pretty sure heās now VP of ticket sales
The city supports the team if they try to put something of a winning combo out there. This front office isnāt good at all and videos like this that promote us losing our team will continue to come out. Zion being a bust has not helped at all.
Somehow Seattle still can’t get a team
My thoughts exactly
This is the outcome when your āstarā player is always āinjuredā.
Man, NOLA sports are a disaster right now. The Pels are imploding, and the Saints are trash. Thank God baseball and hockey never took off because I don’t think that city could take any more.
At least LSU is close enough, even if they ain’t shit either.
Well for starters their name is dumb.
I think this is the most salient point.
I went to New Orleans once for vaca and randomly went to a Pels v Hornets game bc tickets in the 10th row were literally $50, absolutely blew my mind being able to watch an NBA game for so cheap. The game was shit but I didn’t care I had an absolute blast.
The Hawks have home games that feel like road games. NO was the only road game where I felt like we gave another team the treatment we usually get.
Might be time to dim the lights a bit to help save face.
Pels patience is wearing thin.
Looks like a Wizards game to me
i dont blame them. There are three teams that are talent farmers . I feel bad for any player drafted to these losing franchises that care about money over wins
wizards
hornets
3 pelicans
smh their fans deserve better
Cheap way to see the stars on other teams up close
Good. We deserve it.
Problem is; this may make them shook to trade Zion. WHICH THEY SHOULD DO!@
Level 100’s still going for $200 a pop though lol.
Exactly. If they dropped the ticket price to match demand, the seats would be filled.
Sadly, the owner is too rich to be affected by market forces.
Relocationn soon
Wow.
Still canāt believe they hired Dumars as GM. This franchise is officially cooked.
Damn Rough to be Nola fan at this time with saints and Pels not too hot
That roster needs an overhaul. Zion and dejounte need to go. Just build around murphy. There are decent pieces there (queen and fears). Not sold on missi and hawkins is a bust.
The NBA product SUCKS across the board. The game threads on Reddit even have low attendance
