It’s simple, the human body isn’t meant to move like that when you’re that big

For Hartenstein at first his ankle was just sore so they assumed typical b ball injury and he would be good to go in a day or two. His ankle never got better so they re evaluated it and turns out it was a soleous strain and Thunder tend to be on the more cautious side so that’s how it turned into day to day to two weeks

nothing to investigate. hes too athletic for his own body. even when hes out of shape he can do 360 windmills. Too much fast twitch. If there was ever a chance for his body to handle an nba schedule it was lost early on when he was getting hurt too much. Maybe if he was like 240 from the moment he entered the league.

Best explanation I’ve heard for the big rise in NBA injuries/stars missing time is a combination of things:

 

• There’s a lot more off ball movement and faster pace in the game today, per NBA minute guys are running about 15-20% more miles (https://abovethebreak.substack.com/p/the-truth-behind-load-management)
• There’s also more hard direction changes and stops, just a natural consequence of off ball movement, screen heavy offences
• The combo of these 2, especially in super tall ppl, is a lot more strain on knees, ankles, tendons, etc.
• On top of that, American players especially have a lot more miles on them before they even get to the NBA. AAU ball is having kids in intense exertion situations for way more hours per year, during key physical growth/development periods too. It’s emphasizing tonnes of tourneys with like 3-4 games per day, having kids specialize in ball earlier (vs spending a bit of time on multiple sports for longer), having kids train for ball specifically year round, etc. Players are entering the league with a lot more basketball miles, more worn down bodies, joints especially

 

Of course each injury is different, it’s not all this, but that probably does explain plenty of the overall trend. In the 90s, star players used to miss an average of ~11 games per season, now they miss an average of ~24 games per season. There’s probably a cultural aspect too, like:

 

• Players have more power now (vs teams/owners), so they aren’t pushed to play through injuries as much
• A psychological feedback element; all of these career altering injuries are legitimately happening more, so both players and teams are proactively being more careful, sitting stars more to try to avoid them, even if it’s not always necessary

 

But I think culture is just part of it, it’s gotta be an increase in physical wear too. Like last playoffs alone, Hali, Dame and Tatum all tore their achilles, that’s wild and I don’t think it’s random chance. I do think players are more prone to these types of injuries today, due to fundamental changes to the NBA game, and changes to how they’re developed pre-NBA.

I think the conversation is going to shift to whether the Pels should just get out of his contract at the end of this season. With all the games played and weigh-in benchmarks they put into his contract, it will likely be lightly guaranteed next season.

He’ll have 1 completely healthy season that’ll fool a team into giving him another big contract and then it’ll be back the regular program

Greg Oden had one leg shorter than the other which was a big part of his injuries too.

Which is crazy because he had surgery in 6th grade to fix it, but it caused him to walk with a limp. Crazy that it was a known issue and still overlooked at the time.

Also Jokic straight up isn’t athletic. Half the reason he save draw FTs like Giannis or Embiid is that he’s too slow in getting a shot up after a foul. He’s a great, great player despite his athletic limitations because he can hit any shot, can’t be moved and has too 5 vision all time. Zion IS his physical ability. Can’t shoot, doesn’t understand the game at a higher level. He’s just a 280lbs wrecking ball that can jump as high as explosive guards.

Yeah if theres a guy thats the perfect example of just being too athletic for a human body its him. When he came into the league he looked like Morant but 80lbs heavier lmao. Conditionings obviously a factor and plenty of blame to put on him tho
