BballRef’s MVP tracker is wacky af. Last season it had Jarret Allen as top 10 in the MVP race for the majority of the season. There’s really no reason to use it.

That aside, Hartenstein is our 4th most important player and he’s closer to 3rd than to 5th.

As far as I know BKRef doesn’t explain their criteria for this tracker, but I’m guessing they’re using the “win share metric” heavily in their formula(win share/48 I’d think)

Win shares are incredibly biased towards big men.

For reference, Gafford during his time with Dallas in 23-24 was at .257 win shares per 48, which would actually be ahead of Luka and ranked third in the entire NBA behind Jokic and Shai.

So yeah, the top spots can usually escape this, but it shouldn’t be taken that seriously.

That definitely seems silly, but I wouldn’t read into it. It says a 0.3% chance, so it’s overcalculating by 0.3%.

Everything beyond like 5th place in MVP voting in any given year may as well be considered a 200 way tie for 6th.

It’s probably guessing some local OKC guy will throw a vote based on historical precedent of oddities like that.
