I wouldn’t be so sure that his three point shooting will take a huge dip. He may finish the season around 37% on ok volume. He is letting that 3 fly a lot less hesitantly this season and was probably the #1 thing he worked on this off season with his new founded confidence from 3 this season.

JJ on 30 million a year might be the best contract in the league (for non cost controlled contracts).

It was said somewhere that Jalen Johnson plays basketball like how you imagined LeBron’s kids would. And it tracks. He’s worked out with Bron the last few seasons and it shows up most of all in his decision making. Jalen could just try and jump and explode past everyone but he slows down, and waits for reads and gets off the ball.

I’m so fucking excited to get Trae (Tiny Archibald 2.0) back on this team after the new year.

Porzingis and Trae have been injured for most of this season and we’re still winning games despite having 76 million dollars sitting out.

They are currently a playoff team despite having tons of missed games from their two highest paid players. It’s fucking crazy.

Should get Trae back a little before the new year! My best guesstimate is the 18th, it’s 2 weeks and 3 days after they said 2 weeks, but there’s three days of rest after the game on the 15th so I think they’ll sit him out for an extra 5 days of rest.

His passing and rebounding is what impresses me the most. How many 4/5s in the league are definitively better passers than him? It’s less than 3. How many 4s in the league are better rebounders than him? Just one, a guy you may all be familiar with by the name of Giannis. His paint dominance is quite frankly something I always expected of him but of course I’ve been rocking the Jalen Johnson flair in our subreddit since he averaged 5 a game. His shot also looks pretty sustainable at this point. Like I feel confident in saying I trust him to get up 3-5 threes a game and make them at at least an average clip and when he’s the transition and paint monster that he is, that’s all you really need from him. I’d like to see him continue getting to the line more as all stars need foul drawing in their bag. My one real disappointment with Jalen this year is I think he’s SERIOUSLY regressed on defense in a way that’s more than just the typical “oh this guy is taking on more of an offensive load so he’s gonna be worse on defense” like I’m starting to get mildly worried.

Of course it’s a fair discussion to have, I’m just sick of it dominating all the news about the Hawks. They’re playing really well right now and I’d much rather be talking about how good of a pick up NAW has been or how well Okongwu has been playing rather than every thread devolving into Trae discussions.

The other thing is that for people who watch all the Hawks games is that while his future is a little uncertain, we 100% need him right now. As good as Jalen has been playing he’s not at the point where he can break down defenses off of the dribble in the half court consistently like Trae can, and we desperately need that in the clutch.

Hawks are playing multiple bad defenders right now, taking minutes away from kennard Wallace, krejci, Isn’t going to drastically hurt the team. Multiple teams have built competent rosters with small guards. It’s not that hard we just haven’t had the pieces until now.

Defense isn’t elite btw, it’s been slowly trending down the last couple of game after facing better offenses. Maxey just dropped almost 50 on us.

I’ve been watching the Hawks more than any team in the league lately because I’ve been betting on them almost every game since Trae got hurt. Honestly it seems like Jalen Johnson and NAW are doing a great job handling the lead playmaking roles.

Yeah, Maxey put up a lot of points last game (amazing fucking game BTW), but the Hawks also had the best shooting half of any team in the last 70 years so how are they missing Trae?

Trae was an elite enough offensive player to make up for his defensive deficiencies at his peak from 2020-2023, but he’s gotten worse as the league’s gotten better, and he’s just not a winning player any more unless you have a really specific team construction. I’d be interested to see him play next to Gobert for instance, but he’s not doing it in Atlanta.

FWIW, it’s not a sample size issue at all. Over the last 3 seasons, the Hawks are 60-75 when Trae plays and 29-21 when he doesn’t. If that’s not enough to prove that they’re definitively better without him, it’s enough to show that he’s certainly a failure in the largest salary slot and it’s time to try something different.

Forget the team without him as is right now. Imagine if you could replace him with someone who could create and also play both ends of the floor. Imagine this team with someone like Jalen Suggs as the starting PG! That’s a team that could genuinely win the East.

Excited for him to come back and feed our guys some easy looks. Just about every game we have two or three stretches where the team just can not generate a bucket for 3-4 minutes stretches of game time. Having Trae back who is able to limit those stretches by generating easy looks and getting to the foul line will help tremendously. Also it will hopefully get Dyson back on track. He has had to step into the play making role on the team alongside Jalen and it has hurt his defense a good bit. Less load on offense and allowing him to contribute on easy cuts and dunks will allow him to expend more energy defensively.

The offense has been just as good without Trae as it was with him the last 2 years. Any problems caused by losing him are tiny and fixable.

Meanwhile, the defense is much better without him than it ever was with him. The defense has never even been average with Trae on the floor or in any of his 8 seasons in the league.

The move is to get something back for him while he still has trade value. Imagine if you could add like a Jalen Suggs for creation or a Jaden McDaniels as another elite 3&D guy. That would be so much more valuable than trying to fit the square peg back into the round hole.
