Just took the dive myself this past March. I recommend a wet shaver (I use a Remington balder pro) so you can do it easily in the shower. Use some pre-shave oil to soften the hair and help protect your scalp from cuts as you wash up, then throw on some shave cream and use your shaver all over. Get a hand mirror to check and make sure you got everything, but after doing it enough you can tell by kinda running your hand over your head. When you get out the shower, use some sort of bump control cream or liquid to prevent razor bumps, then moisturizer and you’re done. Repeat every 2-3 days or as needed.

I took the plunge a couple years ago. It was a process - terrifying at first, but I have zero problems with it now. I’ll attempt to share my wisdom.

First, it’s kind of a myth that some people have round heads and others don’t and so they look good bald or don’t. Everyone has round heads. I’m sure there are a handful of people whose faces just don’t take to it, but they’re the strong minority. And, yeah, growing out a beard helps you balance out your face.

I did it in stages - I started with a #3 clipper, and gradually went down over about a year and now I use it without the guard. It’s just a Wahl clipper I bought at Target, works great.

The benefit to this is that I didn’t have to go whole hog. The downside, of course, is that hair grows, it doesn’t shrink. So, if you start at no guard, and decide you want it longer, hair will grow and you’ll be able to see where you like it. My experience was that I always liked how it looked, then tried it a little shorter, and liked it better. Ultimately, .5 and 0 made a significant difference, though, and that’s when other people started saying it looked good. I bought one of those skull crushers and went down to the skin once, but didn’t love it. My head was too pale and I didn’t like how it felt from a tactile perspective either. It felt like skin instead of hair and it was weird. Of course, I only kept it that way for a week, so I could revisit it.

The golden rule, though, is that the longer your hair is, the balder you look. It’s not lack of hair that makes you look bald, it’s contrast. So, the benefit of going shorter is that there’s significantly less contrast.

As for practicalities - like I said, I just bought a Wahl clipper at Target for $40 or so. I also bought one of those barber’s capes online and a hand-held mirror. I put the barber’s cape laid out on the floor of my bathroom to catch the hair, then shave in front of my bathroom mirror and use the hand-held to check the back. When I’m done, I wrap up the hair in the cape and put it into the trash. Then, I use a broom to sweep up the hair. I have a dustbuster as well if it misses anything. I try to get as little hair into my plumbing as possible. The benefit of the barber’s cape is that it’s slick so the hair will slide off easily. I try to do it every 3-5 days.

For the beard, I just use a #3 beard trimmer, then line up without the guard. A small trick I’ve learned is you use the broad edge, you can clean up the tips of your facial hair without cutting it off.

For products, I have Shea Moisture beard wash to wash it. I have Honest Amish beard oil as well, but I don’t apply it that often, so I don’t know if it does anything. I’ve tried beard balm, but I don’t think my beard is long enough for it to matter, so I stopped using it. I think that’s more for really long beards that need more taming.

I’m not someone who historically had looks issues, but I can’t deny it all fuqqed with me pretty good for about a year, so don’t be too worried if you have strong feelings. I came out of it pretty good, though, and, honestly, I get more attention from women now than when I did with hair. Hair is also more than just about looks, though, it feeds into identity. I kinda liked the process of growing it out and feeling more “wild” then cutting it and feeling more clean-cut. I was a little worried about losing that sense of self, but I just developed a new one with regards to my current process. You can adapt.

It’s also free, and you can shave it anytime you want if you have an important event, which is nice. Good luck bro!

you’ve already gotten good responses but honestly it doesn’t have to be difficult or a chore. Get a good clipper (or a multigroom like Phillips and use it for your beard as well) and work it into your routine: shave (lowest guard, don’t razor shave), shower, lotion. that’s all there is to it.

I just use my Balding clippers I bought like 7 years ago. Keep them clean an lubricated and they last a long time.

Truly depends on your ethnicity and patience. When you look online you’ll be led into some shit like “safety” razors but some dude in Germany who may look drastically different from you. You’ll also be told you can never use a razor and instead to invest in some Andis clippers. Truly no middle ground online….so my advice is to go to a barber and get it done professionally and THEN slowly test it out. Fail a lot? Go back and get it professionally done and…test again.

I’ve been using a Gillette 5 blade for about a decade now w/some Cremo shaving cream. I do it in the shower. I then put some Gold Bond on the dome when I get out. Next man will tell you some drastically different shit.

The special shavers I’ve seen bald people use seem really easy to do. I don’t think they give the glossy shine of an MJ bald though.

IIRC (i might be missremembering) Butler never knew who his dad was and Jordan was in the same city as his mom around 9 months before his birth. Also they look quite similar and Butler was playing for the Bulls at the time which probably added to it. Theyre also similar height and build, but the main point is that he doesnt know who his father is and Jordan was in close proximity at the time he was concieved and they look similar.
