A fan hits a half-court shot for $5,000 two nights ago, in Miami.
Remember when half court shots were for 50k plus…
The Lakers one from a few nights ago was 50K
should be increased to 100k+ now that Mark Walters is the owner lol
10k now 90k deferred to 2035
$750 monthly increments
It jackpots every home game up to 100K.
Someone on the Lakers sub actually hit it for 100K. I think that dude since got banned from reddit though lol.
I remember the dude who hit the shot, but banned? Any info you recall?
Found them! It was /u/lakerswiz and it was actually only for 35K, my memory failed me lol

He was a pretty prolific poster but am blanking on his username, he hasn’t been around for years.
Clippers to offer $5k and a job for planting trees
But you dont actually have to show up
The knicks have been giving $50k half court shots since the 2010s
these poverty teams
That’s because 5k in Miami is 50k since there’s no 95% tax like in NY
Tell us your voting preferences without telling us your voting preferences.
Also, tells us their education level without actually telling us their education level.
One in the same for the most part.
The phrase is one and the same.
I sure wish that were true :(
LMFAOOOOOOO. Right……
You get a Toyota in Portland
You get a bell tv subscription in Canada 😭
I mean that’s not too bad. You might make some solid money trading in/selling a brand new Toyota.
Okc has a 20k shot
It’s $10k for Hawks but regardless hitting one of these in front of 20-30k fans would heal me.
10k walking distance from magic is a recipe for
I made a half court shot in college and won 100 dollars off a flight for delta airlines, so I ended up booking a 300 trip and had to pay 200 bucks 😭
lmao. You can get more than $100 just for being on an overbooked flight. they will even pay for hotel and meals if they can’t get you out that day.
But you gotta make sure you demand it. Cause they will gladly try and give the lowest compensation possible. And pretend there’s nothing else they can do.
Yup, ‘the meek will inherit the earth’ was probably the biggest lie in the bible which was full of them.
Shrinkflation
Steph ruined the half court shot economy
50 large
I’m pretty sure Indy had one that was like \(400 the same night that the Lakers had one for like \)20k lmao
A Knicks fan once won like a shit ton of money… In lottery tickets.
The pelicans one was a free year of cookies and he hit it
Cheap pricks
Umm, yeah those are still around…
shrinkflation 🇺🇸
Too many hoopers in Miami /s
But seriously, maybe.
The ones in OKC are 20k
Do we remember literal current times because they still happen? Yea.
My good friend won 20k a couple years at a thunder game. #smallmarketperks?
I can’t remember which team it was, but some guy won $500 bucks and Chick Fil A biscuits for his entire section. Something stupidly cheap like that
Too bad he probably played peewee intramural basketball at his youth church group like 20 years ago so he doesn’t actually win anything since that makes him “ineligible”
I one time got selected to attempt a half court shot at a St John’s game at MSG. They made me sign a form that said I did not play any sort of collegiate or professional basketball ever before and asked what the highest level I played was.
I assume this is what all half court contests make people do.
How did you get selected? Was it just a random seat/ticket draw or did you have to specifically enter yourself to get selected? I’ve always wondered how they find some of these people….
Not OP, but I’ve been selected (twice actually). No secret, the only thing they asked is where I live. Me and a buddy were just sitting pregame with jerseys on and the hype up people came over. I did purposely make eye contact fwiw. Got Broadway tix and had and chance but turned down (and regretfully/stupidly) a half court shot.
I had student tickets and sat in student section. I’d get there like 30 min before tip and stadium was pretty empty and they just came up to me and asked if I’ve ever played basketball before. I said yes and then they asked if it was professionally and I said no. Then they asked if I wanted a chance at half court shot and I said hell yea
I got some banana bread at work the other day, dude. Hell yeah
havent been to an NBA game but in euroleague the cheer leaders shoot a few balls into the stands and the people who catch them get to participate in a game
but when i did it there was no contracts or anything you just go down the stairs show the cheerleaders the ball and then watch the rest of the quarter with them and then you get to come to the court and only then find out the game and the prize
I’ve signed up before games at a promotion booth pregame. You fill out basic info, seats, level you played at, etc. Anyone who has played around Varsity level or above is automatically disqualified.
this is genuinely disgusting lol
My hockey team has an event where you walk around the arena and pick your season seats. Once you set up payment and everything, they have a slap shot challenge where they put a board over the goal and there’s just a 6” hole in the middle and if you make it your seats are free. The forms you sign before taking your shot are similar and killed my thought of having my friend who played in college take the shot for me. At least they allow you to have someone take the shot for you.
Only 5k? Times really are tough
Enshittification is truly unavoidable
Give them a break man, their total revenue was only $417 million last year
[deleted]
Whoosh
Get him boys.
Now that everyone is taking logo shots in game, a half court shot doesn’t seem as impressive (i guess).
“Congratulations, we’re going to reimburse your ticket”
Followed by
“Sink this half court shot for a free beer”
Miami Crowd went wild like he just hit a game Winner, and honestly $5k feels like a Championship bonus.
The cheer probably felt better than the money. I had a small crowd react like that when I spiked someone in a Smash Bros tournament and I still think about it.
Bro that wasn’t the crowd, those effects are built into the game
Nah when I performed through the fire and the flames on expert mode on guitar hero the crowd was fucking going wild. Still coasting off that high a decade later
I was there last night, the crowd absolutely went nuts
At the smash tournament??
The tournament mode is built in as well
Fuck man I spiked a friend while we were playing with a group at someones house. Everyone went “ooooooooh”. Spiking someone in smash will always feel good.
In Smash 4, using R.O.B., I played a pro player in one of the earliest DVDA Vegas tournaments. I neutral aired his Ness who didn’t have much damage off the ledge but not too far. This led to a double jump into a spike which killed him. Obviously not a true combo but it only worked because it was unexpected. Whole crowd cheered including his own teammate that got hyped, but he had to tone it down right away.
But yeah that’s a euphoric feeling
That’s awesome lol
When you’re at a game and actually get a chant going is such a fun feeling
I do stand up and it keeps me going
He can’t even get bottle serve at a club in Miami for 5k
I’m old enough to remember when the Bulls would run the “Million Dollar Shot” during home games, from the opposite free throw line.
Then when someone finally won, it was a shit show.
The original Million Dollar Shot that popularized the trend.
The insurance company that had to pay out the prize money refused to pay, because the winner had played college basketball.
Now you get $5K for a halfcourt shot. Times have changed.
Atleast he still got paid out, even if it was over time. Still fucked up though
He still got paid out, but it wasn’t even by the insurance company, which means they got away with it…
hopefully there was a boycott campaign vs. that insurance company, and they were run out of business
Doesn’t look like it! From their website : “American Hole ‘N One is the world’s largest and most respected prize coverage and hole in one insurance company.” I personally don’t have much respect for them…
$50k/yr over 20 years starting in ‘93 would be very comfortable living.
getting the entire sum instantly is always better tho
people didnt do it back then but anyone with the choice of getting a lot of money now or have it split over a period of time would and should take the lump sum if they know anything about finances
A lot of times the lump sum payout is a lower dollar amount though.
If it’s a million now or $50k over 20 years that is an equal nominal amount so you are correct.
It’s still better to take the lump sum in most cases if it is lower. The idea is that you can invest the money and make a return on the money to more than offset the loss in taking it all at once
Time value of money baybeee
and plus, 1993 50k isnt the same as 2013 50k
Yes, I understand the concept. I am simply explaining that a lot of times the lump sum payout is a decreased amount. And it’s not a small decrease.
When choosing the lump sum option for lottery winnings, the payout is typically 40% to 50% less than the advertised jackpot annuity amount.
So in this case at that lump sum decrease it would be taking $500-600k up front, having to pay taxes on it, and then investing it.
And yes I know you would be paying taxes on \(50k a year, but probably at a lower tax rate(though I could be wrong about that - happy to be corrected) for 20 years. So you would have to compare investing \)500-600k post tax vs investing $50k a year per year post tax over a 20 year span.
The scenario above was a payout of equal nominal dollars so math is much more in favor of taking the lump sum up front. But when you decrease the total payout by 40-50% it’s not as no brainer a situation.
I agree with everything youre saying, but I also had this thought of if I got a deal like that and needed to live off it without working. Cases like that get very complicated and depends a lot on the person and where they live, but its an interesting thought experiment of if you would live better in the short and long term after taking the full money and living off of what you get from investing it + a big fat cushion or would it be better to live off of 50k a year and invest what you save up. Since im living in europe i could live like a king in both scenarios since the cost of living and housing is much much lower. 50k a year is what im hoping for after finishing my engineering degree and working for a few years lmao
Most of the time it’s better to go with the lump sum because if the company goes out of business then you’re out of luck. I think PCH or whoever did the 5k a week for life went out of business and whoever didn’t take the lump sum got the short end of the stick.
It always is, and it’s still better to take the lump sum
knicks and lakers don’t offer such dogshit prizes… just saying. watching league pass some of these teams/owners are incredibly cheap.
Is this the insurance company’s fault or the bulls? The bulls entertainment crew picked this guy. I bet the insurance company had pretty explicit rules.
Ie obviously they wouldn’t pay if you got Steph curry “from the crowd to shoot”.
The big bad guy insurance company prices up the product based on the rules. They are only the villain if they changed the rules after the made shot, or unfairly presented them to the bulls without properly informing them.
I bet it was an oversight from bulls entertainment
Lol at Miami offering just 5K for this.
Miami found another undrafted 3pt shooter
Embarrassing for the heat. 5k fucking cheapskates
The Heat don’t pay these things out, it’s the sponsor for that doesn’t that offers these things. So if the sponsor only does \(5,000 it might be something that is done every game, compared to a sponsor that does a \)100,000 shot that does it once a season or a once month.
\(5K in the cocaine capital? That’s just sad. MSG gives \)50K
Only 5K?
5k?
Cheap motherfuckers
$5k, that’s it? Times is tough.
5000? That’s it? I wouldn’t even jump around for that, just wave to the crowd and shake some hands.
I would go crazy if I hit a half court shot while playing HORSE lol
Mr Money Bags over here 🤣
and go back to sitting in your court side seats.
lol I’m not rich, but I grew up with half court shots being a life changing amount of money.
But if you won a 5K bet with a friend you wouldn’t go absolutely nuts?
It’s not life changing, but if an easy instant 5K doesn’t make you go crazy then youre rich as hell.
I would react to much less given the circumstances, but if I hit a half court shot at a NBA game I would be slightly annoyed that I only won 5k vs the 50k-100k I’m used to seeing
Right in time for the holidays … clutch!
We just had one like a week ago too!
Vs the cavs
Coming soon: Hit from half court and we’ll pay your health insurance deductible!
Kinda off topic, but it’s crazy how strangers want to see you win and are happy for your success more than those that are close to you!
Those close to you are envious. They’re happy, sure, but then they immediately switch to “why wasn’t it me?” mentality.
A stranger won’t have any of that weight. They’ll just be jumping around for a while and then forget about it later because you’re not in their monkeysphere.
Facts.
You guys have awful friends
\(5,000 lmaooooo Lakers do it for \)100,000
Yeah this is a bad look for Miami.
How much of that 5k y’all think he’ll actually get? After taxes and all that
They gonna find out he played high school football and it’ll be over with
Prob like 2100$ lol
5k for this is kind of lame
Bro just won a used 1998 Honda civic
Noice
You’ve won a giant check that says 5 thousand dollars!
What jersey is that?
Yeah I came to say that jersey is 🔥
$5,000? Jackie Moon was offering more than that at Flint Tropics games 50 years ago
\(5000 is whack, the franchise made more than \)5k in the time it took him to shoot…..
5k is a joke. Should be a car or better.
The rare occurrence of deflation
Wasn’t this last night?
Weird how the ball slowed down so much when it hit the rim
Time for insurance to kick in and not pay out cause he played basketball
When he came off court they handed him a “made shot” fine for $4,999.
Didn’t these used to be 50k half court shots? Why are things moving in the wrong direction
Only $5k. Do better Miami
If only Lebron was still there to tackle him. Fr tho these are always my favorite highlights.
Whoever’s on the mic is clearly a big fan of blur
$5000? Not worth the effort 😂
F’n 5K? Good for three months of rent money. Goddamn cheap bastards
“You’re not supposed to make that.”
$5K? In this economy?
Weak ass prize pool do better
Just 5k? They made that in half an hour at the food stand
Tell me that’s not a shorter Hassan Whiteside clone.
Hassan Shortside
Damn they rly tanked the winnings lol I remember when half court was a million
Man… all that jumping had me thinking about that dude who tore his Achilles doing the half court shot last year. 😬
this would be the highlight of my year for sure
This was last night.
Why was that woman trying to get him to invest that $5k in her scam business?
Doesn’t count his toe was slightly out of the box if you zoom in - Jackie Moon
after taxes $2600?
For context, if a 20 mil a year player playing 48 minutes every game of the season he would make that in one minute.
I love the NBA, but things are fucked up in the world.
This happened last night
Where’s LeBron when you need him
5,000 ????????????
Where’s Bron to tackle him 🥲
That will pay for courtside seats hurray
He can have $5,000 but he’ll never buy a cooler jersey than the one he already has on. 🔥
You get a new Toyota in Portland
