God I hate this argument so much.

Hate to do this but that specific season should not be counted in the dead ball era. It actually was one of the easiest years to score if you were a primary ball handler/scorer. I forget the exact reason I think they just “banned” hand checking and the league hadn’t caught up.

For context look at the top 11 scorers of that season. Something like 9 or 10 of them averaged their career high that season or a decimal off. Literally look it up before you argue about it. Off the top of my head only Carmelo averaged significantly more later in his career in NY (Wade too).

Allen Iverson who had been in the league for a decade had his career high scoring average that year. Kobe career high, LeBron career high, Arenas, AI, Paul Pierce, Dirk. Ray Allen and Michael Redd second highest scoring average of their career.

You think it’s just coincidence? Like seriously put your thinking cap on.

Not to take away from Kobe but want to point out that year absolutely doesn’t follow the sentiment for the dead ball era especially for the elite primary ball handlers.

It’s one of the most overrated high scoring seasons not bc it wasn’t impressive. But bc people fundamentally don’t understand the context of that season and simply look at pace and think wow Kobe was doing something nobody was! All the top scorers popped off that year so it’s not as unique as it originally looks.

Ya but when Kobe averaged 35 that was only like 2 pts ahead of 2nd in the league, bron averaged like 31 that year too, when harden averaged 36 the 2nd place scorer in the league was at like 28ppg. The pace may have been much slower but the top guys were actually scoring more ppg that season than when harden was having his peak season scoring. Also Kobe took 27 shots a game that year as opposed to harden who took like 24, harden only shot 20+ times a game 3 times in his career while Kobe did 13 times

You’re not disputing his point, though. Harden has played in a much faster pace almost throughout his career. The season you’re referring to, 2018-19, the Pace was 100.0. The fastest pace Kobe ever played in was in his final season at 95.8. In no other season he played in was the pace faster than 93.9 and the majority of his seasons were near 90. Make whatever argument you want about ‘top guys’ but Harden is playing in an era with roughly 10% more possessions per game. And in an era where jacking up 3s is not only accepted but encouraged.

Yeah exactly, while it’s true his role changed, he clearly looks the best physically since the injury. As someone who’s watched every game of his over the last 8 years or so, the difference between now and his first year in Philly is very noticeable.

I do also think him not having to bring the ball up every possession has been great for allowing him to use his energy for very effective bursts, rather than 20 seconds of dribbling under pressure. Either way, so fucking cool to see him doing this well.

Underrated as always. He is one of the best scorers of all time. People just hate him for his teams choice, teammates, bad luck on facing a warriors dinasty on the west and bad luck with injuries (and a choking game where missing 27 consecutive 3’s is kinda like god don’t let you score today)

Dude is a menace as scorer, perfect iso scorer on 3 levels, unstoppable. And when he want to assist, the guy is just gifted. I know Durant has 2 rings, but for me harden is the best of the original thunder trio. But his ft style makes people hate him so much. If Chris Paul doesn’t get injured he kicks the dinasty warriors and gets a ring as the main guy (something the bus no driver would never)

Happy he is going on this run so younger fans put some respect on the name.
