Is Chris Paul is one of the very few players that can claim to be the best or greatest ever for multiple franchises?
Obviously being a single-team player leaves a ton of players out, but let’s go through some options. We’ll say +1 for best (peak), +1 for greatest (impact), +0.5 if you have some strong argument. I had five guys:
LEBRON JAMES: Unquestionable best and greatest for the Cavs. He’s the best Heat player as well, but not the greatest. Wade is the clear pick there. [3⁄4]
SHAQUILLE O’NEAL: Still the best Magic player, but Dwight is the typical greatest pick, holding way more franchise records and similar accomplishments. His peak is probably the best Laker ever, but not the greatest Laker. [2.5⁄4]
WILT CHAMBERLAIN: For the Warriors he had the best statistical peak ever, while Steph is the unquestionable GOAT for that franchise. He played a short three years for the 76ers, 3x MVP and their first championship. A big wrinkle is his Warriors years were mostly in Philly, so his case is just really weird. Dr. J is the go-to pick for “greatest” Sixer, but I’ll say +0.5. [2.5⁄4]
JULIUS ERVING: For the Nets if you include ABA he’s the clear best and greatest. 3 MVPs, two rings and FMVPs. For the Sixers he’s not the best, but has the clear strongest argument for greatest with longevity and accolades (11x AS, MVP, ring). [3⁄4]
CHRIS PAUL: For New Orleans, him and AD are close. CP3 has him beat in advanced metrics (WS, BPM) and single season MVP finish. He also has the most wins in the playoffs. Best and greatest. For the Clippers, his competiton is Bob McAdoo and Kawhi. CP3 has had comparable playoff success to Kawhi and advanced metrics paint him as the best of the three again, all had short tenures. [4⁄4]
For a lack of competition CP3 definitely has the clearest and best argument to make for not only both best and greatest in both franchises, but he also left a big mark on the Suns, comparable to Westphal’s years, and a smaller one with the Rockets and OKC. Fondly remembered everywhere he played.
Others I considered:
MOSES MALONE: Short tenures against Hakeem, Dr. J and Wilt make it an uphill battle.
KAREEM: Giannis has taken the GOAT Buck from him and best is arguable, while his Laker peak goes against West, Magic, Kobe, Shaq, Mikan etc.
CHARLES BARKLEY: Sixers is another uphill battle, even with his great peak. Best Sun ever, him and Nash fight over greatest.
KAWHI LEONARD: Too many buts, best Raptor ever but one year so not the greatest, most talented Clipper ever but only put one full season together at his peak.
