He was insanely clutch in the 4th. But I think that’s because Harden was guarding him. He was getting him in the pick and roll with Gafford and finding open/efficient shots in every position. Once we adjusted and got Harden off him he was jacking up terrible shot after terrible shot or turning it over. Mavs needed to adjust their offense but they didn’t.

He spent year putting up numbers as the no.1 option, but bar 2018 had little playoff success, so he did what many heliocentric stars fail to do - take a back seat and be an amazing supporting piece.

These couple seasons, my own expectation is we’ll be treading water to not give up a lottery pick to the Thunder and look competitive, until all the picks to them are processed. Last season we were even good enough to go into a playoff run. I was under no illusion that we’d be a finals contender, the west is too deep, and we always have a star injured during our playoffs run anyway.

This season, I don’t know if we’ll even get to the play-in. It’s as if all the previous issues (non-star player going off, defensive rebound issues, Kawhi not playing, old folks) all bunched into this one.

I don’t think so. The Clippers got crushed on the boards in the Nugs series so they were intent on getting a power forward. Norm was the only player they had that had a large enough salary to be used to match salaries in a trade. They would’ve trade Norm away for that reason anyway.

I don’t think being an all-star would’ve raised his trade value either. Teams know what kind of value he brings to a team. They also know he’s 32, in the last year of his contract, and they could potentially lose him after a year.

I find the idea that rebounding and not spacing was the biggest problem for the Clippers in the Nuggets series very bizarre, and being forced to continue to watch DJJ and Dunn brick a trillion 3s because no one respects their shooting while John Collins is just kinda vibing on the team only reinforces that feeling

I didn’t say rebounding was their biggest problem. I just said it was the problem they were intent on fixing. Their spacing shortcomings can’t really be addressed unless they can get a guard and a forward defender who can shoot accurately and also defend at a high level to replace Dunn and DJJ but they can’t. That’s not a problem they can fix.

No. It’s very clear that scoring focused guards with mediocre/bad defense have limited value. It’s why guys like Grimes/Cam Thomas couldn’t get an extension, Sacramento wasn’t able to dump Monk, and Sexton cost a 2nd rounder just to move.

Norm making the All Star game doesn’t change his archetype, and they decided to go for positional need knowing they didn’t want to pay him.

It’s looking like a bad decision because Beal was horrendous and is already out for the season and Bogi has looked far worse than he did for us last regular season, but Norm getting the All Star nod doesn’t change anything.

It’s just very bizarre to me that the Clippers saw all the spacing problems Dunn and DJJ created in the playoffs against the Nuggets and decided the solution was even less 3 point shooting

Collins is a better 3pt shooter than Dunn and DJJ and also bigger. Brook is a shooter and he replaced Ben Simmons who doesn’t shoot at all. Beal has always been an efficient shooter. For all their faults as players and issues with roster construction, there is no way in hell you can make an argument that this is somehow less shooting.

Collins has not meaningfully reduced Dunn or DJJ’s minutes (he literally didn’t play past the 3rd quarter this game), he’s effectively a replacement for Powell, that’s a massive drop off shooting. Lopez is an upgrade over Simmons in shooting but he’s so old that he’s unplayable for more than 10 minutes. And Beal even before injury is a vet min shooting guard with 0 defense, you can’t seriously have expected him to get serious burn, especially not in the playoffs. Yes, this is obviously a massive drop off in shooting. The Clippers were literally 2 for 10 on 3s in the two overtime periods, and those 2 makes were both stepbacks from Harden, all 8 bricks were wide open looks from role players. Powell would have at minimum cashed out 2 of those.

Your entire argument is disingenuous when you’re insistent that Beal is a vet minimum shooting guard.

Had we gotten production from him that was simply on par with what he did in Phoenix, then all of this makes a lot more sense and works out better. We didn’t and that’s where we got burned. The combined shooting of Collins, Beal, Cp3, and BroLo very obviously is a net positive over just Norm in theory. But Beal looked worse than he ever has in those limited games, Bogi came into the season off a big injury looking awful, and CP3/BroLo have looked terrible.

The idea was right but it just didn’t work out, but arguing that this was immediately nonsensical is dumb.
