Didn’t the Hawks’ pick (via Kings) and Spurs’ pick (via Hawks) get determined by a coin flip because Hawks and Kings had the same record? If Hawks land a top lottery pick from that pick trade, you could say that coin flip is what allowed it because otherwise the Spurs would be the ones with the Pelicans pick had the coin landed the other way.

Yes. But I’m talking about on draft night. The Hawks and Spurs were both on the line with the Pelicans. A very reliable and talented reporter reported about it after draft night. I think it was Mike Scotto, can’t remember. But the insider said both the teams were on the line with Dumars. The spurs were willing to drop from 14 to 23 in order to retain the ‘26 unprotected swap but knew internally that Carter might not be there by then. And the Hawks were acting a little slower with their response. As they wanted Asa but tried to see which teams would take him in the 15-22 range. Teams before the draft begins, call other teams to get a sense of their draft board/direction. Hawks knew that a slew of bigs would be taken in the teens, just didn’t know who, as they valued Asa high but not high enough to warrant the 13th pick. OKC left bread crumbs that they were signaling to take Derik at 15 instead of Sorber. Pelicans had Queen as a top 5 pick on their board. Spurs wanted Cedric Coward at 14 but Memphis swooped in and traded up with the Blazers to nab him at 11.

For everyone in the thread a couple of days ago wondering how the Wiz could’ve possibly traded Poole and saying the Pels fleeced us: this is why we dished him. He will absolutely contribute, and he’ll have stretches where he looks like a starter on a contending team, but those are pretty evenly interspersed with games of absolute lobotomy basketball. Massive offensive tunnel vision, optional defense, and just general clown show BBIQ. Certainly entertaining, but not very helpful when you’re trying to develop good habits in a bunch of very young rookies.

I love the guy and think he gets a worse rep than he deserves, but getting out of paying him \(31m this year and \)34m next is not a bad thing.
