[VIDEO] Paolo Banchero has quite a bit of trash talk for Tobias Harris, just to miss both free throws while dishing it out.
why does it suddenly seem like everyone already turned on Paolo
It happened way faster than I expected. I was laughed out of the building only 4 games ago suggesting Paolo might be a little overrated.
Now it seems to be the consensus.
I think Goldsberry started a preference cascade.
I think part of it is its unpopular to hate on young players especially when they are a high pick on cheap deals, but now that he’s on a bigger contract but still looking the same, just needed one small push from a pundit to get people more open on criticism.
I’ll definitely back this up because it’s annoying to me how quickly people are about declaring busts in year 1 or 2. It’s way too common people forget these guys are often like 19-20 years old, and won’t all be ready immediately. It’s a hard league to adjust to.
The flip is also a pet peeve of mine where people will project a dude’s career out to be a top 25 player ever by the time they’re 24. Just feels wrong after what happened with guys like Grant Hill or D. Rose. But that’s a very different hill I will happily die on.
People also had no expectations for the Magic before this year, it’s easy to be forgiving of a guy’s flaws when he’s on a team that’s not doing anything anyway. This year they were expected to potentially push for a top 4 seed (based quite a lot on expected improvement from him specifically) and they’ve looked like shit, people are a lot less forgiving.
i think it’s just cuz trying to draw conclusions on guys before their 4th season is ridiculous. some guys take several years to figure it out or take that leap. Giving up/hating on guys this early is 95% of the time wrong/not justified.
He’s the Carmelo Anthony of Josh Smith’s.
That plus the shot against Atlanta last week was kinda unjustifiably bad
edit: also Orlando as a team has played very physically (arguably recklessly) for a while now, so there’s probably so built up frustration from that
I’m someone who tries to see the upside of younger players and not overreact but even I have to admit paolo is a bit disappointing, he has a lot of potential but has seemingly no urge to use his physical tools properly. At some point the criticism has to arrive
Josh Smith 2.0
4 games ago was basically the first game but now we have multiple games showing us his game hasn’t meaningfully improved
I feel so vindicated. I’ve been pooping on the Paolo brigade since he came back from the oblique
Bc his team is underperforming and he’s not making that leap to superstardom. In a redraft he might still go one but it’s not crazy to take him 3.
If anyone it should be Mobley.. guy is not him, but people don’t even watch him so he gets less pressure.
Paolo has some untapped potential still imo
Mobley is a much much better player than Paolo if you value winning. If you just like stats and don’t care about efficiency or defense all that much, Paolo is your guy
Who’s better. Paolo or Chet? Haven’t been up on basketball much, but remember debating on them in thier draft.
Thanks
This has been asked a few times on Reddit, and most people have said Paolo every time. Paolo has really struggled to begin this season, so the answers might have changed. I’ve been on the other side from day 1. If you like points/rebounds and don’t care about efficiency, Paolo is the answer. But Chet is a top 5 rim protector in the league. He’s also been above league average from 3 for his career. That is the most unique archetype in basketball.
Paolo hasn’t shown that he helps his team win in any meaningful way. Chet’s advanced numbers peg him as one of the most valuable players in the league. It’s Chet.
One is probably the best defender in the world (Human Division), the other isn’t even a net positive in the thing he does best which is scoring.
He’s spent our entire game running into people, yelling “ayyy”, and yelling at the refs and then has the nerve to keep flexing and trash talking when he gets bailed out. Dude has been a punk.
Dejounte Murray redeemed!
At least he’s finally using his physicality instead of try to act like he’s 2010 Kobe
“ayyyy” reminds me of those Melo clips lmao.
There’s a time limit on how many seasons you get without being able to shoot. See: Ben Simmons.
Somebody tell Paolo he can buy himself 3 more years if he posts one well-produced offensive workout video a year
Simmons was a genuinely incredibly impactful player though. He had huge flaws but he didnt ever make his team worse when he was on the floor before his back injuries
Ben’s inability to do anything on offense was constantly exploited by every half-decent team the sixers faced in the playoffs.
He made the team worse in every single playoff series the sixers lost, and most of the ones they won.
I remember one of the funniest regular season games where the Wizards just kept fouling him and making him shoot FTs
We’ll always have the Jared Dudley game
I take it you’ve never seen a Sixers playoff series.
He’s one of the more physically gifted players in the league and he plays like an iso player instead of bully ball
People don’t watch Magic games so they don’t understand his real limitations outside of box score items like his efficiency. That god awful, braindead three at the end of the game a few days ago that blew up on here changed the narrative quickly
Cus he sucks and is overrated af. Magic gotta look at Wagner
I think it’s one of the things that now the narrative is out there a lot of people who had the opinion is being vocal about
There definitely was a contingency last season that thought franz was the better player especially with Suggs on the court
his season started horribly and people expected the magic to take a leap forward after the last playoffs
His play is not holding up to his hot streak last year, or his playoff performances against the Cavs. His obsession with tough mid range jumpers could not be excused anymore with a better team and spacing around him now, leading to very average efficiency
Cause lots of people had him over cade and cade is killing the magic
I think the dude is good, but I’ve been pushing back for a year on the idea of him being a top dude. The amount of people predicting him getting All NBA this year on this sub was insane.
That being said. He doesn’t deserve hate. He just is what he is. A good player who has limitations on offense, is a mediocre defender, and is on a team that is poorly built to fit him in.
Why does it matter? Some people just don’t like how players play and Paolo is one of those players for me. And a lot of it has to do with his ahhhh and crying to the refs after every single possession that he drives to the paint.
Even more annoying as a pistons fan when I have to watch my teams All-Nba, all-star do the same exact thing on the other end to no calls majority of the time.
ESPN thinks Orlando is a contender so more eyes have been on him
The second you get a big contract signed you go from cute rookie to expectations bc you take up X percent of the cap
People really only like someone as much as their perceived value
hope nobody takes this clip out of context because hes been playing very well this game imo
5⁄13 shooting as a big man , #1 option on your team while your team is down by 20. Yeah sure..
Just an average game for him really.
idk if my standards are low or everyone has just been desensitized cause of how well players have been playing but when i made this comment he ended the first half 10/5/7/1block (correct me if im wrong i wasnt paying the most attention to the numbers) on decent efficiency and drew a lot of fouls. he didn’t do many (if any) of his dumb contested mid rangers and was consistently finding the open man on his backdowns. i think he deserves some praise after an understandably criticized first couple of games
Idk about very well
He got bailed out by refs with several phantom fouls, inefficient from the floor, and was getting cooked by Tobias Harris
He did not play well
I don’t think it’s a sudden thing
He just hasn’t taken the leap expected of him but a lot of people including himself act like he took that leap and he’s now one of the best players in the NBA causing a lot of people to sour on him including myself.
Paulo prob said shut up - nobody knows you. Tobias said yea and your ceiling is me brother.
Because this sub gets all their opinions from about 2-3 podcasters
cuz after rookies get paid the max, if they don’t improve on their weaknesses people turn on them immediately.. it’s always been like this.
Cause he’s on the magic
Don’t think people care about the magic enough to hate them tbh
Their new uniforms are sweet tho
“New”
Yeah they’re not quite 1:1 with the old ones
Grant Williams type beat
“I make bofe. I make bofe.” proceeds to clank both shots
Clank bofe*
Paulo and Tobias were jawing all night. Tobias outplayed him.
Dude I remember watching it and going, “bro your mouth writing checks too much”
lol pistons play by play guy is the best. BALL DONT LIE! saying that when you’re 80+years old is gangsta
Later in the game he made some sort of comment about how “Paolo is back at the line where he continues to be unimpressive” I love this guy
It’s pretty rare for George Blaha to really single a guy out like that, but he was getting digs in at Paolo all night.
Only other one in recent memory was Brunson during his playoff clown show
Then he said he had “two weak looking free throws” 😂
George Blaha da goat
George has been on the broadcast team since the NBA - ABA merger. He celebrated 50 years with the team recently.
Hey, that’s newly inducted member of the Basketball Hall of fame you’re talking about, George Blaha in his 50th year broadcasting the Pistons!
Blaha one of the GOAT play-by-play commentators imo
I mean at least Paolo won’t score 0 points in 29 minutes on 0/2 shooting in an elimination game lmfao
I am still salty about it to this day
While on a max contract…
Don’t forget that it was a 3 point game, if he scored just 4 points we would’ve won
Harris probably feels the same way about Embiids 6-18 game 7 performance v Toronto ngl
or his 5-18 performance in game 1
or his 2-7 performance in game 4
or his 4-20 performance in game 4 vs Atalanta to go 3-1 up, Harris was cooking that game and he got sold
Tobias had 15 points in that game 7, with the lightest defensive attention and assignment between Jimmy, Ben and Embiid. We also weren’t -4 per se minute from him, so he could actually rest.
No one says he’s always been bad, but he’s sold so fucking many times.
Also we won that game vs Atlanta and were up 3-1. Now what happened for games 5-6-7?
Just to be clear we lost Games 4 and 5 against Atlanta by blowing two 20+ point leads, we won Game 6 to tie the series 3-3
Shows how much you know about your own fuckin team that you think they won game 4 lol it wasnt even that long ago
Lmfao I love how you’re using Joel’s bad shooting performances to justify Tobias taking only 2 shot attempts
You don’t seem to understand that the 2 shot attempts was the bigger problem, not the fact that he went scoreless. Btw 0/15 is leagues better than 0/2, it at least shows that you tried to make your shots even if they didn’t go in
Also all your examples barring the Atlanta one were from Joel’s pre-MVP candidate days, back when he was primarily a post player and hadn’t yet developed the face up game that enabled him to become one of the best midrange shooters in the league
Embiid averaged 27⁄13 and was All-NBA 2nd team in 2019 lol
Yeah but he wasn’t an MVP candidate though, he only became one after the 2020-21 season
Haha yeah man it was definitely Tobias that was being let down by his teammates
🤡
i promise bro just one more embiid playoff run, this time will really be the one where doesnt have horiffic games in crucial losses bro i swear 🙏
it was brett browns fault, no it was simmons fault, no it was harris fault, no it was docs fault, no it was hardens fault, this time will really be the time, i definitely wont be throwing all the blame on Nurse/PG come playoff time 🙏
i wonder how long it will take sixer fans to realise that the best team Embiid ever had was let down by no one else but Embiid, averaging 17 on 37% shooting for a whole series lmao
damn this has been pent up for a while huh? last name gotta be harris
seriously doing all this defense for a role player that made 40m per year and went out with 0 points on 2 shots in an elim game is fucking insane, if you werent hating on the sixers youd get laughed out the room for this shit lol
dont worry dude this year is definitely your year after your 5th scapegoat is finally gone 🤞
my guy everyone on this board declared embiid a corpse last season, nobody expects a championship run lmao
you either come from an alternate reality and wound up here accidentally, or you’re in tobias’s entourage or harem, or just dumb as hell
who said anything about a championship?
A legacy season for Embiid would be a competitive second round
im convinced you havent watched any of these games you’re talking about since you think tobias could feel let down by anyone else, so we’re done here flairless fella
keep on using that basketballreference tab to fight the hater fight tho harris junior
If you’re gonna sit there writing paragraphs about how much you hate embiid at least flair up. Unflaired talking shit with your profile set to private is pretty sad lmao. You scared of people talking shit back to you or something?
do you talk about basketball or do you talk about reddit profiles
weird ass
idk saying flair up just means they want to be able to shit talk your team. Its still in good fun. Getting defensive about it and taking insults to a roleplayer personally is definitely weirder behavior.
Embiid has had his bad series no doubt and I don’t like his flopping ass even a bit, but acting like all these other guys were great is just clowning, Simmons sucked in the playoffs, Harden had bad games, Harris was doing cardio… But explaining that to you is wasting time, you are talking about PG come playoff time in 2025, doubt you watch any ball.
acting like all these other guys were great
no one said that bozo, you invented an argument to have inside your own head
Embiid ever had was let down by no one else but Embiid
Your words clown.
that doesnt say the other guys were great
it says the biggest failure was him
Why you playing dumb bro, you are acting like they were scapegoated while they have been shit as well.
I really understand Sixers fans hate for Tobias but he’s been pretty good for us and been a great leader and vet to the young guys.
Yeah he was pretty good for us too when the games didn’t matter
Embiid is pretty good when the games don’t matter too. Was pretty good in the playoffs for us last year. Averaged 15.5 and 7.5 Rebs in the series.
I am too lol. Such a terrible contract, and he never even played a 3 and D roleplayer type. Oubre’s literally doing better this season than for cheaper in the same role than Tobias ever did for us. The trash talk was probably all true – it was just funny timing here.
Also I don’t know if he’ll ever outlive (basketball career wise lol) the infamous or famous depending who you’re talking about, “over me??”line lmao
So that’s a tough one
The 2-13 from three in game 4 against Toronto when 10 of them were classified as wide open was the moment I knew this dude was not it.
FBI needs to look into this game
“IMMA MAKE EM BOFF”
So are we gonna have the unpleasant Paolo discussion soon?
“Don’t get me wrong, he was a good doggy and you loved him like only a child could. He just had certain challenges, so we had to take him to the vet, and have him put… uh, on a beautiful farm out in the country where he will be happy forever!”
uh, on a beautiful farm out in the country where he will be happy forever!
sends him to Charlotte
Already had, Goldsberry likened him to Josh Smith with less defense in Zach Lowe’s podcast. I now wonder if we put Josh Smith on this Magic team in his prime, if they’ll do better than with Paolo.
I can’t explain how this comment makes me feel.
Absolutely ridiculous take that will age terribly.
Reddit already decided in the past 2 days that Paolo is a bonafide scrub
Absolutely ridiculous
Ahh the Grant Williams
Beautifully scripted
Ball don’t lie
Why does the Disney logo somehow make it better too lol
Sick jerseys
So good
Josh Smith has always struggled from the stripe…
Sneaky good comment.
lol felt bad to make a joke at Paolo’s expense, but, I had to do it.
Paolo has that arrogant vibe in him. No wonder he had some turmoil with dejounte murray. During his rookie year, sga said jdub is the ROTY. Of course that was his teammate he’ll support him, but Paolo took it personally, so when dunked on shai he talked trash to him. I was like cmon man being competitive is not the same as being thin-skinned.
Also, before wemby entered the league, he made some dumb comments comparing him to bol bol. He didn’t like the Wemby hype train and appeared kinda jealous. Guess what paolo? Wemby is on a whole different level now. He had lots of trash talking with Ty Jerome, Ben Mathurin, and now this. I’m sensing some KD vibe in him, where he’s kinda sensitive idk.
I also watched his media day interviews before. He always has this narrative in his mind where he thinks everyone doubts him and he wants to prove them wrong. I was like .. Nah bro many of us believe you’re a great player! Just show it.. Problem is, HIS PLAY DOESN’T BACK HIM UP. He likes to talk trash but his game doesn’t really impact winning.
Every great player is a little arrogant. I’m ok with it. He needs to be great for this team to succeed. Every star goes through this phase, he just needs to prove people wrong.
And the irony in what you’re saying basically backs his response his entire career. His whole life he’s been touted as a top guy but given this question mark with him. Even on draft night everyone thought the magic were taking jabari smith.
I get this is bordering on hopium, but every star player has to fight through the criticism and be a little arrogant in that. Anything in the contrary is an even worse sign. The guy is only 22. Confidence is key at this stage and having a bunch of it isn’t necessarily a bad thing in a quest for greatness in the nba. Show me a star, and I’ll show you a degree of arrogance. Steph, LeBron, Kobe, MJ- go down the list. Maybe Tim Duncan? But I’d say he’s more of an anomaly than the norm.
Oh my god
Weapons grade bum
How are Cade’s efficiency numbers?
Then Unc took him to school all game 😂😂
Somewhere Grant Williams is nodding in approval
Paolo is kinda a jackass.
One of the few cases I’ve seen where the trash talk actually affects the free throws lmao
“Mailman doesn’t deliver on Sunday” might be the peak example for this moment.
LeBron talking to Gilbert Arenas before Gil shot his free throws. Gil looked pretty shook once he got the ball from the ref
They having a mid off
Tobias is literally the LeBron James of mid ass players
Why everyone always goin after Toby man, I get the Jimmy thing but I feel like every season someones trashing Tobias during a game. Feels so random haha. Maybe he’s a sneaky good trash talker.
Tobias is the oldest player on the team of younger guys, he knows what he’s doing. He knows how to take smart fouls and make other guys mad.
Tobi honestly seems like a great fit on the Pistons, he’s doing much better than with the Sixers 🥲
I think part of it are the expectations we have. For us we just need him chip in like 12-18 points, hit a few threes, and be a stabilizing presence, rather than be the third option on a championship team.
George Blaha putting emphasis on Paolo weighing 250 pounds while I’m over here at 270.
Sixers legend Tobias Harris
We were having a nice game up until that point. Freaking trash-talking Tobias and then bricking both free throws. I don’t what Paolo did over the summer, but it doesn’t feel like he did much of anything besides assume we were waltzing to the Finals.
Ever since that little sequence, the Pistons have out-scored the Magic 40-26 :(
I was a fan of paolo before but now honestly I feel like he’s got some attitude. All I see from him are trashtalking clips.
What are you talking about dude
A player on the Magic struggling to shoot? No wayyyy
Lmao
Lmao Paolo seriously 🤣
When keeping it real goes wrong
I irrationally hate the Disney logo on the Magic jersey. It ruins the whole pinstripe look.
Orlando Josh Smith
People calling him trash but he played extremely well against the Sixers on Monday. Seems like a talented player to me.🤷🏿♂️
10-17 from the line ouch
Side note but the new Magic uniforms are incredible.
Tobias went crazy after this and was talking shit the whole time. Thanks Paolo.
Tobias 2.0
The Magic have been better with him in the bench every season. He’s a product of the NBA media selling us a bad bill of goods.
Can lip-read “Corny as hell” here 😂
I see the Paolo hate train is in full gear for uh, absolutely no reason at all.
lol my goat is a fucking laugh stock i’m gonna die
Tobias Harris over ME?!
We is cooked next Olympics, it’s not just him but most of the young guys seem to be regressing. All the while the world players are rising, guess gonna be on my old head Millennials to save it all again.
At least Maxey’s looking real good this year!
Cade gonna win it for team USA, don’t worry.
Holy fuck don’t call Millennials old heads.
Fuckin hell I’m only in my early 30’s.
lol it was sarcasm, thats the point, most of the people in this subs are youngins and they consider anything over 30 old lol. So that’s what I meant by “old head”
Magic legend: Tobias Harris
Can you imagine if Tobias is saying “your just me”
This mf talks way too much
So lame how we can’t hear anything players say
If he keeps this up he might end up playing for the Italian national team after all lmao
#AYY
Y’all MFS said he was better than Jdub smh
Magic got the best name and top 3 uniforms in the league.
Who knew, Franz would be that guy. My question is who is getting traded, Franz or Paolo? Who does the FO prefer, because if this is what’s happening to Paolo, changes will need to be made.
NBA is soft, bunch of tik tok divas
“I’m busting you ass n@… Sit yo ass down ..” 😂
I dont get the hype behind this guy.
How come people don’t treat Cunningham the same way on Reddit? Paolo and Cunningham have virtually the same career efficiency and he has actually shot worst than Paolo this year.
You never hear anyone bring up his efficiency or J-Dubs or other young players who struggle with it like they do with Paolo.
No one has a hate boner for Paolo more than Reddit, all players talk shit, he isn’t anywhere hear the worst in complaining, is all of this coming from bots?
I don’t hate him. I just saw the clip and thought the timing was funny. Didn’t know the rest of r/NBA was like that about him when I posted.
He’s playing pretty well this game tho
He did in fact NOT play well this game
He sure did shoot a shitload of free throws though.
Notabley bad on defense
He singlehandedly tanked my FT in fantasy lol
Yo my bad, I commented that way too early 😂
No worries
