The key here is they don’t have to choose. They can stay in their seats forever by doing nothing and blaming the other side for all the problems created by Congress doing nothing. Then the executive branch just constantly increases its scope of powers via EOs and the adminstrative agencies acting in Congress’ place. The President does whatever they want without Congress actually checking him.

All of that is true regardless of party and pre-dates the stress test that is the Trump administration’s attack on democracy. Now, it’s even more chaotic.

We are basically seeing the US become a weird monarchy that flip-flops its entire agenda every 4-8 years. It hurt itself in its confusion.

There are individual presidents to blame, but there is a huge lack of Congressional pushback on the Executive branch over decades that is a massive structural problem. It’s a problem that essentially all congresspeople are responsible for creating that stems entirely from loyalty to party over loyalty to country.

Edit: I will add that it is also the fault of the American electorate. If a politician fails to vote the party line, they don’t get re-elected. That probably stems in large part to the influence of media and money in elections. You need very concise messaging in very expensive advertising to communicate, so there is no real opportunity for nuance.

Why do people hate the IST so much? I think it’s pretty fun; the alternative is to just have normal regular season games. My one tweak would be to condense the schedule so that the group play isn’t so spread out and the tournament has a stronger identity. I don’t think that the IST needs to have playoff ramifications to make it worth competing in.

Edit: I would also keep the groups static year-to-year, basically have them be the different conference divisions, in an effort to foster some rivalries.

Obviously it doesn’t make sense for the league to do this (it would reduce the total number of games), but I would love it if the “regular season” accounted for one home-and-away game for each team (58 games), and the additional 24-ish games made up the in-season tournament, with an emphasis on division and in-conference play.

You have five teams in each division, so you play home and away two extra time vs each division opponent (16 games, 6 total games minimum against each in-division team per season), and then an elimination tournament where the top two or three teams in each division qualify (working out to 8 teams per conference, two wildcards). Each round would be home-and-away, so finalists end up playing 8 additional games for a full 82 game season (or 81 if the final is one game at a neutral site). The downside here is that non-tournament teams only get 74 games a year, but I’ve also been on the “season is too many games” bandwagon for years at this point.

IST games might feel unimportant in October/November when you have Finals aspirations, but if the wheels start to come off mid-season, the IST might suddenly feel more important to a team.
