NL Silver Sluger Finalists
Had to delete the previous post due to a mistake in the title.
Sluger?
I just fell down on my knees on a public library.
In*
He could be on the roof
For Christ’s sake don’t kick even harder. Lol
How do you know OP isn’t the size of Godzilla?
What is this, a library for ants?
He just fell down in his knees on a public library
Technically, in*
Just watched a guy fall to his knees while he was standing on the roof on a public library.
Edit: dammit
If you only you had a dictionary somewhere nearby…
Today is not your day, huh? Lol
Sluger sounds some kind of slur
Just saying it with the hard R, wow ok
My sluga
I hardly know her
Slex Sluger
You know, a sluger. Like a walleye but a bit different.
lol at the ATL blurred out next to Freddie freeman
Yeah like everything about this post is weird
I dig it. We stan someone who is clearly drunk at work in some sort of fashion
Is that a dig or did they forget?
He’ll always be a Brave on the inside. ✊😔
There’s a Brave inside him?
:(
So breaking it down by position:
C- definitely going to go to Will Smith. I’m a little surprised Contreras was a finalist over Baldwin, but I guess that just came down to playing time.
1B- This could reasonably go to any of the three, with their OPS all within about 20 points of each other. My guess is Alonso just because he has the big slugging numbers. Very competitive position overall, Michael Busch and Bryce Harper weren’t that far off from the 3 finalists.
2B- Marte clearly has the best rate stats, but he missed enough time that it might give Turang a shot. I’d still go with Marte
3B- This looks like it will go to Machado, although Suarez likely would have had it if he didn’t get traded. I do not understand why Riley is a finalist, every other position has 3 finalists and Riley wasn’t that good this year.
SS- This should go to Perdomo, but Lindor and Turner aren’t that far behind and are more recognizable names, so I would not be shocked if either of those two ended up winning
OF- I think Soto and Carroll are locks and Stowers vs Tucker is close. Similar to second base where Stowers has the rate stats in his favor, but he missed enough time that I could see it going to Tucker (or maybe even Wood). I’m surprised Tatis wasn’t nominated over PCA.
DH- Schwarber would win at any position that isn’t DH but he has not shot at this one. Going to Shohei.
UTIL- I’d give this to Burleson but it feels like cheating. I don’t really consider a guy who plays 1B and corner outfield to be a utility guy. But I don’t really like the utility silver slugger in general.
Team- Dodgers. Lead all nominated teams in OBP, SLG, and runs scored.
Nice to see Burleson get recognition, but it makes no sense to have him listed as a utility. Were there that few decent and qualified hitters?
The intention of the UTIL positions was to reward guys like Edman, Zobrist, Kike, who played around the diamond because they are essentially a starting bench player where they played +defense at 4-6 different positions and managers were essentially just resting guys and playing the util guy at their position.
The problem is that it’s not a super common skillset and the MLB’s criteria is unclear. Historically GG/SS awards required 713 innings of play at a position before the 141st game, so I’d assume just guys with 713 innings divided across specific infield positions/outfield but not greater than 60% at any one position?
Hey he also pitched an inning which makes him the best hitting pitcher not named Ohtani. 😉
The team one pisses me off. Not because it’s not true and they don’t deserve it this year, but that was the Diamondbacks last year leading those categories. Especially runs by a statistically significant amount. And the Dodgers still won that because voters didn’t watch the Diamondbacks destroy the baseball last year.
Ya that was some definition big market bias last year.
Nah man they found one stat the Dodgers had an advantage in by like, .003, and that was enough.
Wood’s absolutely brutal slump post-ASB presumably precludes him from winning. kinda surprised he’s up here at all given that
NF OF is kind of weird in general. Wood isn’t a great candidate, but I still think he’s a better choice than PCA. The power from PCA was great, but idk how a guy with a .287 OBP is a silver slugger finalist.
Outside of Tatis, another guy that could have been included is Ronald Acuna Jr. His rate stats are better than any other NL OF, the downside is he only played a little over half the season, but his playing time wasn’t that far off compared to Stowers. 457 PAs for Stowers and 412 PAs for Acuna.
These are the top results of the vote so four finalists probably means a tie for third place
Michael Busch and Bryce Harper weren’t that far off from the 3 finalists.
Not just as a Cubs fan, but I feel Busch was robbed, as he was better than both Olson & Freeman. I agree that Harper was good, but there’s a significant gap between him & the other 4 (look at Rbat especially).
Harper: .844 OPS, 131wRC+/129 OPS+, 27 HR, 18 Rbat
Olson: .850 OPS, 136wRC+/138 OPS+, 29 HR, 31 Rbat
Freeman: .869 OPS, 139wRC+/141 OPS+, 24 HR, 30 Rbat
Busch: .866 OPS, 140wRC+/147 OPS+, 34 HR, 33 Rbat
Alonso: .871 OPS, 141wRC+/144 OPS+, 38 HR, 34 Rbat
Does Cronenworth have a shot? What is the worst Silver Slugger that has ever been awarded? 98 Conseco?
Probably not. Both Burleson and Donovan clearly have better stats and Burleson is a 1st baseman that technically qualifies, but probably shouldn’t.
Braves fan here and I agree
frankly im just happy max muncy is on the list
3 dbacks likely to get their position, man our pitching really is that putrid…
“1B Freddie Freeman, ATL LAD”
That’s my sluger
Riley had a 103 wRC+ across like 100 games lol. Why did they feel the need to have four 3B nominees?
They’ve already voted. the “finalists” are really just the top 3 vote getters at each position, they’re not a slimming of the field that the voters then have to choose from. 4 third basemen means there’s a tie at third
Surely the Dbacks did well this year with 3 silver slugger candidates
Yelich is on there? Did they need names to fill spots?
Bro Jake Cronenworth is on there. Shallow pool this year.
It’s just the top 3 vote recipients, those 2 probably had very few votes.
What do you mean? Yelich very clearly had a better offensive season than Ohtani and Schwarber. 29 homers is way better than 50+
Schwarber was like a hotter version of Yelich this year even lol. Would hit 4 dingers in a game and then go 0-30, Yelich it would be 2 dingers before the 0-30 lol
Crazy that Nico had such a good year he was a finalist for the silver slugger, even though he won’t win. (Give this man his gold glove, tho)
Him and PCA really came in clutch this season
Even crazier to me that potentially the best 1B of the year, and the Cubs best hitter, isn’t there. Michael Busch deserved a nom at the very least.
With all due respect to Nico, and I have a ton of it, I don’t associate him with the term “slugger”.
Known sluger Nico Hoerner
I love how we’re all rolling with ‘sluger’ now
Hoerner is a name of Germanic origin (and a nifty little second baseman)
Luger is a name of Germanic origin (and a nifty little firearm)
Michael Busch not being a finalist is tough
I’m a Braves fan and I think Busch should win lol
I think he’s a lock if he stayed a little more consistent. But, like the rest of the lineup, he went ice cold for, like, a 1⁄3 of the season
I would guess its mostly that he still doesn’t play everyday, has similar stats to the other 1b nominees, and is much more of a platoon bat still.
Honestly, it’s more that Silver Slugger voting has often been dumb. In 2019, Alonso led all NL 1B with 53 HR, a .941 OPS, and a 144wRC+ and was 2nd in RBI, yet Freddie Freeman won the SS. Nick Markakis won an OF SS in 2018 even though he was 17th in wRC+ in the OF and had just 14 HR while Harper hit 34 HR and had a 135 wRC+, which was 3rd highest.
Sure but I dont see an extremely strong argument for busch over any of the other guys in this specific case. You could make the argument to swap him out with any of them but we are talking the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th best 1B by WRC+ and the difference is 5 points. I think its fair to put him 4th given the things I mentioned.
Oh, yeah, I wasn’t making an argument for Busch or against anyone. You could make a legitimate case for 5 1B in the NL as Harper also had a really good year. Regardless of who wins, I wouldn’t say any one of them were snubbed or that one was clearly the better choice.
Which is also insane to me. That too.
Gerry finally getting some respect, although I doubt he wins it despite having a 10 point wRC+ lead. Ketel and Corbin should win easily though.
Ya I’m worried about Perdomo getting big-timed by the bigger names. Hope the voters were paying attention
What do you mean finally, this was his first great season at the plate lol
Yeah, he just doesn’t get much attention. Also he arguably should’ve been an all star this year
Who would you replace with him?
On June 30, he had a .262 avg, .774 OPS, 9 HR.
He ended up ninth in the NL in fWAR in the first half and everyone ahead of him was an all-star except for Trea Turner. It’s not that he should’ve won the vote at shortstop or anything, but he was good enough to be an all-star. The real snub is gonna be if he’s not an MVP finalist despite being pretty solidly the second best position player by both WARs. I think I’m just prematurely mad about that
Perdomo and Lindor were practically tied at the AS break with Perdomo gaining momentum. It doesn’t help that the AS voting period was right as he started making a stronger case.
In 2023 Carroll finished 5th in MVP voting and 8th among position players in both bWAR and fWAR. So it’ll kind of even out at least.
what does toy stand for?
Team of the Year, I would wager.
makes sense thanks
How in the world were the Diamondbacks nominated for team of the year with our pitching struggles 😂
Because pitching has nothing to do with the Silver Slugger award, if I had to take a wild guess
Nominated for a team Silver Slugger. Pitching has nothing to do with it.
How the fuck is Austin Riley a finalist? Was 3b complete ass this year or is it a terrible choice?
Once Suarez was traded, there was a hit to 3B offensively in the NL. Riley still probably shouldn’t have finished tied for 3rd (I would guess he tied with Muncy with Machado winning & Chapman in 2nd), but it’s not like they were working with a ton of offensive talent at the position this year.
I’m confused as to why 4 3B have been nominated
Remember, these aren’t nominations. The finalists are just the top 3 finishers in the voting, so there being 4 means there was a tie for 3rd place.
Massive Michael Busch disrespect here.
Higher WRC+ than all 1B not named Alonso, 34 homers ranking 2nd behind Alonso, 1st in ISO/2nd in SLG, hit .261 which is respectable, really the only category he isn’t a league leader in.

Personally I’ve felt like slugging and power hitting was always a little more of the focus unless the BA is insanely high, seeing as it is in the name lol.
It wound up being closer when I looked but when I saw those finalists I saw immediately those were name recognition picks.
Honestly, the more I’ve looked at the award history, the more it looks like voting has just been dumb and is more of a popularity contest than actually looking at stats. In 2019, Pete Alonso led all NL 1B in HR, OPS, and wRC+, yet Freeman won the award. Nick Markakis and his 114 wRC+ and 14 HR won it in 2018 over the likes of Harper (34 HR and 135 wRC+). Bogaerts won it in 2022 over Correa even though Correa had more HR, SLG, and wRC+.
We should end up with all 3 of our guys (Ketel, Perdomo, Carroll) getting it. Embarrassing we couldn’t even make it to the playoffs with that
Historically bad pitching and unbelievably bad injury luck will do that
Where the f is Michael Busch
Yelich being on here is hilarious and also insane.
Hey look, nominated for team of the year! That means we had a good season right?…… Right?
A disaster of a post lmao
Austin Riley?
Why is there only one Rockie? Is this implying our hitting isn’t high quality?
Did they forget where Freddie is?!
Your traditional hitting metrics don’t mean a damn thing in the Crone Zone.
just vote Mets.
Surprised how few of these guys were represented in the playoffs. Like there’s a decent number, but it feels low to me.
Of the 28 candidates, 14 were/are playing in the playoffs. Half of them have appeared in the playoffs. NYM and ARI both are very good at offense but their pitchings are really brutal.
Idk, that just seems low. We let more than a third of the teams into the postseason now, having only half of the silver slugger candidates represented seems low.
That said, that’s not really weighting the odds of each candidate cause some of these are a real shoe in so I’m guessing the playoffs representation will be high amount the actual winners.
Where’s my man Tommy Pham!?!?!?!
/s
Probably trying to fight a gas station attendant or something for looking at him wrong
What’s really weird about this post is the no Trevor Story
Michael Busch robbed
STYLIN’ KYLE STOWERS EVERYBODY
sucks that he got injured but its very funny that we immediately replaced him with Jakob Marsee who was just as good and could also have been a finalist
Great 1B list man haha what if I —— myself? Haha
Was hoping Sleve McDichael or Mike Truk had a shot.
Wow, both the Mets and Diamondbacks with 3 finalists. Those teams must have made deep playoff runs!
Hate to say it as a Braves fan but Austin Riley is Hella overrated. Shouldn’t be here.
Freddie Freeman, ATL LAD
😂😂😂
Busch had a higher OPS+ than any of the 1B on the list.
Austin Riley had a .737 OPS and 16 HR in 102 games. How the hell is he a finalist? How bad was 3B this year?
Alec Bohm, hell even Eugenio Suarez (.897 OPS and 36 HR in 106 games) deserve it over Riley.
What is going on here?
Kyle Tucker? So the term sluger was a typo for slug? Guy couldn’t hit it out of the infield post all star game
Where is judge?
In the AL
He’s not a finalist this year unfortunately
Why no Eugenio Suarez?
Edit: WHY THE FUCK is Muncy nominated and not Suarez?
Because he got traded to the AL
Still hit 36 HR with the dbacks. Munchy hit 19.
You can’t win in a league you aren’t in anymore.
Yep. This isn’t explicitly laid out anywhere on the website, but the way this has been treated in the past is where the player ends up is where they are eligible for the Silver Slugger. This differs from how the Gold Glove has been treated.
Lame
Bro what do you have against Muncy lmao, he had a great year and a better OPS than Machado
He’s also a better person than Machado, lol.
