[Wyc on Tatum] “He’s expected to not be here this season.”
This quote takes the clip out of context. All Wyc is saying is that the Celtics organization isn’t going to plan out JT’s return, it’s solely going to be at the discretion of JT himself and his doctors. Tatum can and seemingly wants to come back this season, but Wyc is saying it’s when Tatum feels he’s ready, not when the org wants him to be ready
No that’s not what he said at all lmao he said there will be a point in time in which he gets cleared and then 5 seperate doctors will come together to see if it is worth playing him for the year or resting him. Obviously they can’t just let Jayson decide when he wants to play bc then he will be back by Halloween
He said they’re going to “jointly” make the decision, it’s not just Tatum’s call
As has literally every decision related to health. Medical professionals in teams are always empowered to intercede whenever they think there is risk of serious injury. There are literally a dozen people who are at the table when the decision to bring a player back from injury is discussed.
The poster specifically said - at the discretion of JT and his doctors. Then you say the same thing he just said as if he didn’t just say that?
I think he could definitely come back but I only see that happening if we are wildly exceeding expectations. As is, there’s no point to post injury Tatum coming back to a below .500 team mid season if he’s not a superstar level player anymore. And there’s just as good a chance by mid season the tank will be in full swing. This season can go off the rails quickly. Any delusions of grandeur could be dead by December.
There’s also no point in continuing to have Tatum sit if physics asses him to be fully recovered, past a certain point there’s nothing to be gained by his absence and it’s just more time accruing since he’s been getting reps of NBA basketball.
Exactly. Even if we have the worst record in the league, if his doctors say he’s good to go, let him get some reps.
It’s gonna take time for him to get comfortable playing on the leg again and he’ll have rust anyways, might as well start sooner rather than later to speed up the process.
Yeah let him play 20-25-30 mins game script dependent and get in gear for next year
This isn’t true, we see players get listed out a extra week or two for a ankle sprain or a groin injury. It’s not ridiculous to say that he should take a extra few months off after suffering the worst injury a basketball player can have. In fact for a team with not many future assets and a stacked draft coming up they are incentivized to keep him out.
I don’t know what that’s supposed to mean, not only is the co text of those injuries and time spent out totally different, but if they’re getting listed out an extra week then presumably they weren’t 100% ready to return.
The point is there comes a point in recovery from any injury where you’re as recovered as you’re going to get and further time off has no continued benefit to offer as far as returning to previous level or risking re injury . I think this should be basically common sense.
What’s to be gained is a higher draft pick.
Actually think it’s the opposite
If the team is out of it, there’s a better chance you’ll see Tatum return to get some games and rhythm back. It’s a full development situation at that point and getting him in rhythm falls into that
If the team is in a playoff race? Throwing Tatum on the court to get his legs goes against what the team is trying to accomplish. Theres an issue of trying to return in high stake games and not being able to ramp up
It really comes down to timing. Returning in December/January is much different than Feb/March. Teams turn it up a notch after the all star break. It’s not the same type of basketball being played in the beginning of the season
Agreed. I know Paul George has spoken about how important mentally it was for him to play a handful of games for Indy to end the season after his Team USA injury.
At a certain point, having an excuse not to play your stars so you can tank for a higher pick is the way to go
While I agree with you on that, Tatum clearly doesn’t feel that way. If every single doctor involved (both on JT’s side and the teams side) clear him, there is no way Tatum is still sitting out to be safe. He is obsessed with trying to get back ASAP. And like some people have argued, IF Tatum has fully recovered it is good to get some reps in with zero stakes, so that he will be more ready to go for the next season. Personally I would rather him just wait, but again I am not a doctor and we already know how JT feels.
The way he feels prior to the season where everyone is optimistic could be very different mid season if the Celtics are in tank mode
Everyone who follows Tatum knows as long as they are in the battle for a playin spot he believes himself to such extent that he will think if i come back we can contend. It just his mindset.
They might not be in a battle. They might be well out of it pretty quickly. Team flat out sucks on paper
Especially with Browns hamstring
Why is this guy still talking?
He’s a budget version of Mark Cuban
Yeah idgaf about this guy anymore either.
Anyone who believes he’s involved in any kind of decision making is crazy. He’s green wallpaper.
Honestly, this is the best outcome
Keep him training
Make sure all the healthy contract players know that it is up to them
I would rather him ramp up in the off-season rather then go from practicing with g leaguers to full NBA action
I want him to look like JB
And to do that, will take him a full season away
I don’t want a KD frame 👎🏾
I fully expect to see him this season. I realize that the Tatum we know and love likely won’t be seen until the 26-27 season (hopefully), but getting over the psychological hurdle of playing NBA competition will be big for him and one that he’ll likely want to get over with this year rather than next year.
I don’t think it’ll matter how good or bad we are either. If we are unexpectedly awesome, we will still use Tatum under a strict minutes restriction. If we are terrible, then it’ll be easier to throw him out there for low risk playing time
By no means am I a Celtics fan. But I’m legitimately worried about Tatum coming back. I don’t think he should come back this year at all. After an injury like that, you wanna be as careful as possible. I wanna see him next year in a fully healthy and peaked condition.
Yeah. But what if he is?
Play Game 1 or 2 in the finals like porzingis before

🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Imagine he started tonight, plays 1 minute and then checks out and then comes back in March fully healthy lol
They basically have Embiid out there playing on 1 leg most of the game. We coulda put tatum in for 1 minute — this should be our “let’s have fun season” and just do random things here and there lol
