Well it literally came down to timing, the Yankees went to the World Series both in the season before and after he played with the Yankees (1982-1995), bad timing I guess. Congrats to him after so many years in the game.

I’m happy for Donnie Baseball! All the Yankee diehards even during the late 90s dynasty all said how much they loved him. My science teacher from the Bronx, a loud outspoken Puerto Rican woman absolutely worshiped Mattingly. It showed she was a real fan rather than going with the hot hand. She also loved Tino and hated Giambi.

Can someone tell me why Don Mattingly is not in the HOF?

Happy for him. Growing up, my first favorite was Graig Nettles, but then Donnie Baseball took over when Nettles became a Padre.

My best friend was a Rickey Henderson fan, I remember when we would go to the local pool, we would always try to grab lockers 23 & 24.

I was just a bit too young to appreciate the ‘81 World Series, so it was a fun but frustrating stretch in my childhood between then and ‘96 lol

i didnt even know he was with them now. thats awesome. From what I have watched, Donnie Baseball was instrumental in setting up what the Yankees became during the dynasty run, but retired right before the harvest from all the sowing.

Still don’t get how he’s not a HOFer. Even after his injuries, his numbers were still pretty good. Not “Mattingly” numbers, but still good.

I just remember being in ~3rd grade and Mattingly was the baseball card that everyone wanted.

I really liked Mattingly as our Manager, he helped to transition the team into our modern era, and managed players like Joc and Corey in their younger years. Honestly was a better manager than Roberts and if he had the talent Roberts has been blessed with since 2020, he would prob have 3-4 titles

My opinion of Mattingly fell after he told a pitcher to hit Posey in retaliation for a Marlins player being HBP while ignoring that a Marlins pitcher had broken Longoria’s finger a week before.
