Yup the people who are like “duhr Mazzulla Ball=they just shoot a lot of 3s” are just reporting themselves that they don’t know ball or that they never watch the Celtics play. Joe was put into an extremely difficult situation because Ime couldn’t control himself, and Joe has thrived.

To me Joe is a question mark. He got handed a loaded team, only to get outcoached by Doc and Spo in the playoffs. Then we won with an even more loaded team, aided by a couple of injuries, before choking the Knicks series.

I like Joe as a person, and I’m curious to see what he does as a scrappy underdog. But there are still doubts.

The buy-in is crazy. Dudes were dying to get out on the court last year. This season is bound to be a trying one given the injuries and not being a true projected contender. It’ll be interesting to see what he gets out of players when they know they might not be in a position to win it all.

From the player interviews you can already tell that mazz left a large impact on all the new guys. And in the preseason games you can see the results of that, these guys are playing with 110% hustle/energy

They were def. more vocal about their support for Ime and I think he connected better with the players, but the buy-in on the court doesn’t seem to be much more or less. How much of that is out of genuine fear remains to be seen.

More importantly, how many rockets v celtics games will it take for Ime and Joe to fight? I am setting the over/under at 2.5.

they’ve been just as vocal about their support for Joe too like I don’t get the need to compare anything. Tatum has been an extremely vocal and loud supporter of Joe, it just feels like Celtics fan love picking and choosing when to listen to stuff. Tatum and JB have seemingly had all of their head coaches backs and taken stuff from each of them. They are just extremely coachable and they’ve had 3 really awesome coaches. Like Tatum shouted out Joe Mazzulla when he was still an assistant they have genuine respect for this guy.

After everything happening with Ime leaving, there were a lot more questions regarding his departure and how that affected the players. In those moments it certainly seemed like he was getting the lion’s share of the support due to the lines of questioning and the uncertainty of how everything was going to shake out.

A lot of it was simply the shock of the situation and it lingering for as long as it did. It was also being construed as a lack of support for Joe amongst the more cynical Boston media during the first year.

They are both really good coaches who are as you said have earned genuine respect from the players. Now that they have a chip that they aren’t being asked those questions anymore, which has to be a relief on all sides.

I don’t want people to take this comment as anti-Joe, he’s a great coach, but devil’s advocate: Look at the kind of staying power Doc Rivers has had as a coach in this league off the back of one ring. Of course other teams would be interested in Joe if he was available, whether or not he’s a good coach.

I’m not disagreeing that it would’ve been helpful throughout the playoffs. JB, KP, Jrue, and Hauser being injured/unhealthy contributed to the result to some extent, but no one was complaining when we were up 20+ points. Not to shit on KP, but the Knicks loved when Joe put an unhealthy KP in the game instead of Luke. Joe is certainly not without blame. With that being said, I do still think he’s a great coach and glad he’s still the coach.

I think the feeling was they needed KP to win the championship. If you shut him down its unlikely he going to recover and be ready to play at high level. It was a damn if you do and damn if you dont.

Man this just shows you how much the rest of the league expects us to suck that a team figured mazzulla would rather coach a contender than a rebuilding team.

[Stein] Yet it has also been whispered that the Knicks likely did some backchannel exploration to determine if there was any pathway to pursue Boston’s Joe Mazzulla. There obviously was not…and then the Celtics extended Mazzulla’s contract in August.
