100% agreed - I think the mere idea is absurd.

400 games over 6.5 seasons, only 2-3 of which were anywhere near “elite”. Exactly one playoff series victory, didn’t even make the playoffs half the seasons.

Like - yeah - he’s a Hall of Famer for his overall career. But he didn’t do much of anything to warrant a jersey retirement.

Ya I can only say as a Rockets fan it would be like retiring T-Macs number and we aren’t doing that. Amen is already wearing it.

Melo had one extra year but TMac made more All-NBA teams and received more MVP votes.

With the Knicks he had 1 scoring title, 6 all stars, 2 all nbas, 7 playoff wins, 3 playoff appearances, 4 playoff series, 412 games, 10186 pts (7th), 14813 minutes (17th)

Every other retired number has won a championship and played more minutes with the Knicks with the exception of Dick McGuire and Patrick Ewing

But Ewing is the all time Knicks leader in like everything and played there 15 years and made the playoffs for all but the first 2.

And dick McGuire was on the team from the point the nba was a thing and was a New York guy involved with the team his entire life

So I’m going to go with no personally. I don’t think team hoppers should get their numbers retired by a team unless they did something truly great for that team (like Kawhi (raptors) or LeBron (all), maybe even Durant (thunder or warriors)) but I don’t think Carmelo reaches that for any team

And that’s fine, he is in the hall of fame and the nba 75 for his basketball impact, he just doesn’t have the team impact for a retirement

Carmelo’s legacy with the Knicks has always been more about his cultural impact than his accomplishments. Which is why even though he did more in Denver he’s more likely to have his number put up by the Knicks. He likes the org and the fans love him. It is what it is.

Knicks are a historic team but I think it’s a big stretch to say meaningful.

If it was Lakers or Celtics, yeah you could say Melo didn’t do enough to get retired.

But Knicks have a really mediocre history with only 2 championships.

Brother the Knicks were ass my entire childhood throughout the entirety of the 2000s. I grew up in NYC and ended up a Sixers fan because they were so irrelevant and awful for 2 decades except for the Melo years. Idk where this fabled Knicks history you’re talking about is. It is not at the same level as the Lakers or Celtics. Melo has easily met the lower bar for regular teams by just being a franchise player for 5 years.

For what its worth, I am in complete agreement that Melo’s jersey shouldn’t be retired. That notwithstanding, I have felt for years that I did think it would be.

The best arguments to me is that if you look at the guys who have had their jerseys retired by the Knicks: all of them are Hall of Famers who are most remembered as Knicks, and one could argue that Melo fits the bill.

Not exactly a strong argument, and if I were running the Knicks, I wouldn’t do it. But I do think its going to happen. Especially since Dolan loves Melo.

Super average is being too nice. They were butt cheeks most of his tenure.

If they retire Melo’s jersey, they will make their team look small for considering his career with them so impactful. You have to consider that the Knicks isn’t a new team that melo put on the map, they are one of the most historic teams in any sport.

I’m a Knicks fan. Our history is not that deep. We have two titles and have an all-time losing record. This isn’t the Celtics or Lakers.

Knicks should retire whoever they can under Dolan. The whole franchise has been a disgrace under his ownership. Saying this as a long-time knicks fan. They should’ve retired Brunson’s number the day after we willingly signed.

For a franchise as iconic as the Knicks, you can’t be retiring numbers for anything less than a championship run, including multiple deep playoff runs that got close, on top of whatever individual accolades go with that. Ewing obviously never got a chip but played 15 seasons and had deep runs. I loved watching melo play and he was unreal at times but he’s not in the knicks retirement conversation.

Melo is solely responsible for the only relevance that franchise had post Ewing and pre Brunson. Without him, the Knicks are possibly looking at two full decades without a playoff game won between 2001 and 2021.

I dont even think Melo should get his number retired, but y’all need to stop repeating this nonsense lol. It was a great time….For a month. That’s it. He then got hurt , we lost to the Heatles in the first round anyway, and Houston poison-pilled us with his contract.

Melo was here 7 seasons, got us to the second round for the first time in over a decade, and got a scoring title with us. That’s more than Lin ever did.

Starks too. A lot of the 90’s Knicks are close with Dolan and have worked for the team and still haven’t had a jersey retirement so I don’t see why Carmelo Anthony deserves one. Heck, Randle has done more as a Knick than him, and he’s definitely not getting 30 retired.
