[EuroHoops] Giannis Antetokounmpo, Alperen Sengun apologize for social media comments during EuroBasket
Giannis Antetokounmpo and Alperen Sengun, the superstars of Greece and Turkey respectively, apologized for the words and phrases they used on social media over the last two days of the 2025 EuroBasket.
“During my feed, I made an inappropriate comment responding to somebody that was making disrespectful remarks,” Antetokounmpo wrote. “My intention was never to offend anyone. AND I’M DEEPLY SORRY. I have nothing but love and respect for Turkey and people all around the world.”
Antetokounmpo was seen saying “Take the f-cking Turkish flag out of here” during an Instagram live stream from the locker room of the Greek national team after the win over Finland in the silver-medal game.
“My post after Greece game was a communication mistake,” Sengun wrote. “I have great respect for Greek people. No offense was ever intended.”
Sengun wrote: “Wouldn’t the sea weather be nice?” following the blowout victory of Turkey over Greece in the semifinal. The “sea” remark was interpreted by most Greek people as a reference to the 1922 burning of the city of Smyrna (modern Izmir) in Asia Minor. The incident, that took place in the end of the 1919-1922 Greco-Turkish War is remembered as a tragedy for the Greeks and the liberation of the city by the Turkish people.
Giannis also posted a photo of him and Sengun hugging after a game between the Milwaukee Bucks and the Houston Rockets, with the caption: “We play for the love of our countries. We play for the love of game. We play with respect. We always remember sports are made to unite us not divide us
A small feud began between the two players in the last days fo the EuroBasket after Sengun said that “Giannis is an amazing player but not a great passer,” in an answer regarding the strategy of Turkey against Greece in the semifinal. Antetokounmpo was asked about it following the bronze-medal game, clapping back at Sengun.
“I’m not the guy that will talk back to coaches or players or people that say bad things about me,” the Greek Freak said. “It doesn’t really matter because at the end of the day, you won’t remember what they say. You’ll remember how I respond. So, I keep everything to myself. You can go see my clips on YouTube. And then come back and ask me if I’m a good passer. There you go. That’s it.”
In the same presser, Greece coach Vassilis Spanoulis mentioned that “Sengun is a very, very small kid to talk about Giannis,” in the same presser.
