Spurs Victor Wembanyama aka “Wem-ben- yum-yum” makes a cameo on Futurama, voicing an alien basketball player, of course
I love that Wemby has turned this blood clot into his ultimate gap year. All we need now is to hear he’s written a fantasy novel, and thats probably all of his non-basketball bucket list ticked off.
“I helped Patrick Rothfus write the Doors of Stone, gonna collab with George Martin next.”
he is a Sanderson fan !
Well he certainly doesn’t need any help with writing that’s for sure.
Now now, he can always be releasing 10 books a year instead of 3.
He and GRRM can commiserate about people assuming they’ll die before completing their ultimate goal.
Damn and here I thought wemby was cool
Don’t. Don’t you give me hope, even if it’s false…
Wemby finishing The Winds of Winter before GRRM would be enough to rank him over LeBron all time imho
He would be the GOAT for me immediately if he pulled that off.
And if it was actually good enough to wash away the bad taste of the show ending he gets goat status in permanent marker.
I’m excited to see his monk training on the court.
This is how I learn that there’s new Futurama episodes?
The new season started yesterday. :)
Foundation’s latest season ended a few days ago, anod now there is Futurama, life is good.
You enjoy season 3 of foundation? I had a hard time getting through 2 but I don’t wanna miss out.
I’m about to watch the 3 last episodes of the season, it didn’t start so well, but it got better as the season progressed, so far.
I wish they’d stick more to the original book series though.
to be fair, a faithful film adaptation of Asimov’s writing would be pretty boring. stuff that works in writing doesn’t always translate well to film— Asimov’s characters are generally pretty thin, in a way that flies on the page because your brain fills in the gaps but really wouldn’t work on screen
also, if i’m being honest, the Cleon/Demerzel stuff is probably the best part of the show and that’s essentially made up whole from cloth. there are aspects of the Mule storyline i wish they’d adapted more faithfully, but in general doing a loose adaptation was probably smart, even if it does drive me nuts sometimes as a book enjoyer
The Empire plotline also has all the good actors apart from Jared Harris. Their take on the Mule twist was very Usual Suspectsy and not in a good way.
Jared Harris is doing a fantastic job of playing Hari as a smug asshole, which is exactly what he should be, but god I wish they were using him less. There’s a reason he only shows up briefly in the non-prequel books
that said, I thought Leah Harvey was great despite some less-than-stellar writing on some of her plotlines, and I’m still pissed at what they did to her in season 2
edit: in regards to the Mule twist, I think they did some solid foreshadowing on it and, honestly, I do think it could work out fine on its own merits depending on where they go in season 4. The issue I have with it has less to do with how well it works in the context of the show and more to do with how transparently obvious it is that it originated with someone in the writer’s room saying “well we HAVE to change the twist or else all the book readers will spoil it”. It really boils down to Foundation being a pretty good sci-fi TV show but a really terrible adaptation of the books— and frankly I don’t think a faithful adaptation of the books was ever realistic for several reasons, so I’ll take what I can get
Yeah I agree. That’s seems to be a problem with a lot of shows now. The Witcher still makes my blood boil a little.
I guess I’ll check it just so I don’t leave another show unfinished. Hope you enjoy the rest of it.
It is because a lot of these shows aren’t made with the intention of being actual adaptations of the media that they are adapting. Rather they are ways for creators/showrunners to get their own ideas made. But since Hollywood are hesitant to give new stuff a try they sneak it in like a Trojan horse. The Wheel of Time and Yakuza shows are prime examples of this.
its incredible and you should be excited to watch the last season. It gets better and better
I haven’t finished season 3 yet but it’s been significantly better than 2 so far.
I actually liked most of 2 as well, though the Empire/Bel Rios/Hober Mallow line was quite a bit more interesting than the Mentallics one imo
Season 3 just moves really fast and hits very hard so far
yeah tbh I felt like Gaal’s storyline was by far the weakest part of both S1 and S2, but I haven’t felt that way at all about S3. i haven’t finished it yet so they could absolutely biff the landing, but so far i’m impressed
still only about halfway through but it’s definitely been better than season 2. so far every season has had like two good storylines and one weak one, but nothing this season has been anywhere close to as bad as the mentalic plotline from S2
I thought they canceled foundation!
Where the heck were the ads? Saw a ton for the KOTH relaunch but none for this
it was a few years ago, this is the third new (Hulu) season. Congrats on having 3 whole unseen seasons of Futurama waiting for you
hulu literally was futurama themed for a while and everything was presented by futurama.
I couldn’t keep watching foundation. It was so ass. Isaac asimov would be rolling around in his grave. They made a science and technology book so unsciencey
Same lol
I heard it was received poorly. I heard this from 1 upvoted comment in a schmedium sub
Huge Futurama fan here. An issue is the characters sound and feel old now
Personally I just think it’s become just another topical pop culture reference heavy cartoon in the vein of Family Guy and Simpsons.
Original Futurama was just a sitcom in the future with very vague (and even back then, deliberately dated) pop culture references, but episodes were just good fun comedy built around its main characters.
Last two seasons they did episodes about Bitcoin (literally called Bitcoin, not an expy), NFT’s, COVID, cancel-culture, and AI Chatbots.
And personally they just lost me with getting too focused on building episodes around real world actualities.
Admittedly, that change had already set in during the first Comedy Central revival seasons. But the Hulu seasons only took a step further away from the original formula.
yeah that’s what turned me off the reboot so hard. Futurama isn’t fucking South Park— there were always jokes satirizing pop culture but it wasn’t what they built the whole episode around. it felt like they took that EyePhone episode from the first revival and just did that again every single week
Futurama’s first big reboot where they had the body swap episode and the bender has a kid w a vending machine episode were pretty solid but they were the true start of “HEY THIS THING IS POPULAR RIGHT NOW LOOK AT IT” for the series.
When the suits start making demands of the writers
Lmaooo…exactly my thought too
everybody else being damn near completely out of frame is hilarious
And it would have worked just as well if Wemby was the one out of frame. Like one of the adults in Peanuts.
that is because the vid is cropped lol
I like to tell myself that I invented that.
Wait what? Futurama is back?
lol the reboot is on its third season in ~2 years mate
imo it’s hit or miss. the really topical stuff (a 2024 episode about NFTs, for example) is way late and kinda annoying. but it’s still got laughs and does feel like futurama most of the time
it’s no season 3, but it’s worth a watch
It debuted again a year or two ago on hulu. I feel like it’s not worth watching. Every episode is topical humor and current pop culture references, which doesn’t fit the show at all. Not to mention that some of the voice actors have aged so much that the characters sound like they should be a couple decades older and wiser, but they’re the same characters at the same age as before who are still the same fools
How do people feel about the Futurama reboot, by the way? I’ve seen a lot of reviews calling it “as good as it’s ever been”, but I watched like the first half of season 12 and fucking hated it. All of the jokes boiled down to “here’s some commentary on stuff happening in the world right now”, without any real comedic or emotional weight behind them. I dunno, maybe I’m just getting old
It’s hit or miss to be honest
Still one of my favorite shows but I can’t say these last few seasons are “as good as it’s ever been”
It’s like bad pizza for me. Is it good? No not really but I’ll still eat it/watch it because I love pizza.
I think anything that drags on starts sucking after a while as the characters become caricatures of themselves and the show’s specific world gets “used up” of ideas. It happened to the Simpsons like 15 years ago. Even my fav comedy show ever Always Sunny kind of sucks now. It’s like everything is forced and the audience is in on every joke/trope so it’s not really funny. Like Dennis used to do kind of psycho things and it was ha ha omg Dennis might be a psycho that’s hilarious … but now it’s like the actor knows we know so everything is over the top psycho and that’s like, ok we get it already, he’s psycho, not funny anymore…
It depends - do you like CBS daytime sitcoms and family guy? You’ll probably like it.
If you like quality, intelligent, well-made productions by good talent and artists that really care about what they’re doing like the old Futurama than you’ll probably hate it. I myself fall in this category and can’t stand them… but I love OG Futurama. I’ve probably seen every episode twenty or more times.
The difference is the new episodes are so sterile and fake - all the characters for some reason have been completely changed in their archetypes (hence the fakeness). It feels like a cheap knockoff of itself almost.
Most professional reviews nowadays are just paid ads, and many social media/crowdsourced reviews that you find straight off google etc are astroturfed to hell
Yo. I can tell Wemby did this remote lol. His mic is crisp and the voice quality/tone is noticeably different compared to the rest of the Futurama voice actors. He’s just doing side quests during this unintentional sabbatical from the blood clotting.
At least it’s not Dion Waiters.
WHO WUDDA THOT A YUNG BUCK LIKE YOU
i was going to make some snarky comment about futurama being dead (assuming i was out of the loop for years) but turns out it literally just came back
it literally just came back
season 8 dropped in july 2023 lol
I love how Wemby is rapidly becoming the new Kareem. They’re both well read and eloquent men.
I hope Victor doesn’t learn the sky hook though, that would be borderline cheating.
It started about a year before the draft. Rather than all the media guys/scouts saying he needed to build up muscle and weight, Wemby (with his trainer - who was later brought on to the Spurs) took an approach that rather focuses on flexibility and tone, which seems to be much more reminiscent of Kareem than most of the other all time great bigs.
Given his unique body, and now the added problem of the blood clot, there is really nothing that will garauntee him a long and healthy career, but to give himself the best chance - there’s probably no-one better to learn from than Kareem.
I’d love to see him developing a sky hook (not only ‘cause I am a Spurs fan)… It’ll round his game even further.
Too high a release point for him :)
Man, the writing is bad. It sounds like a kid show now.
It’s so fake and the cadence is so off.. there’s no humor - no clever editing. Every single beat is off.. I have no idea who the new editing team is but they’re terrible.
Futurama always had on-the-nose dialogue. It’s one of the reasons I’ve always ranked it below The Simpsons
‘It varies from person to person’
Wembanyama Futurama
🫡
TIL Futurama is still on.
Still doesn’t beat out the Larry Bird cameo
“There’s no way I’m doing that show.”
I thought this show was a relic of my childhood lol when tf it come back on?
It’s came back several times depending on when you last watched. Its most recent return was in 2023.
I love that he’s an actual nerd. Like watches cult TV and reads door stopper Syfy fantasy books. Not just I’m a nurse cuz I play video games kind of nerd.
I have never had more love for a Frenchman
Wetbananas
Didn’t even know they were doing new episodes of futurama
There’s… new Futurama??
Futurama has become a corpse like The Simpsons.
No offense to Wemby, I love him but that was a painfully bad performance and his bit went on too long. It was like they were screaming “look at us we got someone famous” instead of keeping the dialog tight and jokey.
All this to say… Bender isn’t short, he literally has extendo legs and super strength, he’d be the greatest player to ever live.
People actually watch this garbage. Oh and Matt Groeing recieved a foot massage from a teen on Epstein’s plane.
