Great article from Steve Bulpett quoting people around the league on the Anfernee Simons situation with the Celtics.
Not a better scorer on the team? Sir have you heard of our Lord and Savior Derrick White?

You would be correct
What the fuck are these stats? Why are we tracking guys’ loads?
I enjoy the portability stat. Like to know which guys will give me a hard time when im transferring them between poke balls
When you have a good player on a really bad team with really bad culture, like Simons with the Blazers, sometimes you have to go beyond the box scores to see what they actually bring to the table.
The true shooting with him isn’t super promising
his advanced shooting numbers are really good.
The only reason his TS% is low is because he isnt a great rim finisher.
He is an elite mid range, isolation, pull up, catch and shoot, and 3 point shooter.
We’ll just have to see. I think there’s a reason portland had trouble getting rid of him before we came along to dump holidays contract.
Offensive load is basically just a measure of how often a player is involved in a play on offense.
🤣🤣clearly I don’t understand these advanced analytics either
The teams reportedly interested… Bucks, Nuggets, Sixers.
If you look at salaries that probably means Kuzma, Valancunias/Nnaji or a complex Paul George trade.
Not good. I think its clear why the Celtics have stood pat.
It’ll be hilarious if the Blazers’ starting PG succession from 2023-2026 goes Dame-Simons-Jrue and the Bucks’ goes Jrue-Dame-Simons.
Paul George? 2017 Called, it’s over him
Exactly. But if the Sixers are interested, how else do they make a trade work ?
They arent moving Embiid or Maxey for Simons.
Then you don’t do the deal. At least Simons has a chance to be something this year. PG at this point is below-average even healthy, and he’s only healthy like 1⁄3 of the time
Nobody said it was a good deal or a deal they planned to do.
Its just my best guess on what is being offered.
Well, they might move Embiid. That’s a very risky contract.
I don’t know about his salary, but I like the way valanciunas plays. He’s not Al or KP but he has a set of NBA skills and knows how to use them.
Doesn’t work for nuggets unless Aaron Gordon gets traded, which the nuggets probably only do in a three team scenario.
Would be cool if we could make a Quentin Grimes sign-and-trade work.
He’s apparently looking for 25m/y off the back of scoring 20ppg in the 28 games he played for Philadelphia. Outside of that stretch, he’s only been a 10ppg player, so he’s a massive risk.
But I think he’d be a good pickup as a future Derrick White prospect. He’s got potential to be a decent 6’5 2-way combo guard.
If Philadelphia is really hesitant, then I wonder if he’d accept 18m/y from us via a sign-and-trade. That would keep us out of the tax.
If we’re dealing with Milwaukee, then Kuzma is too expensive. It would have to be Bobby Portis + a 3-5m contract.
I’d take PG and a bajillion picks for him for sure.
Anfernee Simons’ Future With Celtics Remains Uncertain: NBA Executives
By Steve Bulpett
There’s a very good reason Anfernee Simons Celtic jerseys aren’t exactly a hot item at the NBA Store.
Because he may never get to wear one.
The 26-year-old scoring guard (a level up from shooting guard) was acquired from Portland for Jrue Holiday in what was essentially a bookkeeping move to help get Boston under the insidious second apron. From the moment the transaction was announced on July 7, his Celtic Life Expectancy became wholly uncertain — and remains so with training camp a month away.
A General Manager Told Heavy on Celtics That Boston Is ‘Still Very Much Willing to Talk About’ an Anfernee Simons Trade
In terms of trade possibilities, one general manager told Heavy on Celtics flatly, “They’re still very much willing to talk about Simons.”
There’s also the huge matter of whether Boston would be able to re-sign him if he does stay the year, but that’s a bridge off which the club may never have to jump.
There is, however, another point of view in some NBA circles.
One veteran (and quite accomplished) personnel executive wonders whether the Celts should be so quick to break up with the new guy. The caveat here would obviously be another club knocking Brad Stevens’ absorbent white athletic socks off with an unrefusable offer.
But, though he acknowledges Simons’ defensive issues, the aforementioned exec is high on the 6-foot-3 collector of points.
“I don’t know what the Celtics are thinking, but other than Jaylen Brown, there’s not a better scorer than Simons on that roster,” he said.
“I mean, they obviously aren’t going to play the same way they played when they had (Kristaps) Porzingis and (Al) Horford and Holiday. Joe Mazzulla’s going to have to completely change the style of play. And Simons… nobody can score like him on that team other than Brown. He’s the second-best scorer, and it’s not even close.”
Nodding to the other end of the floor, the exec said, “You know, the whole idea of having a guard who can defend like Jrue Holiday — who the hell defends like Jrue Holiday? There isn’t one out there. That guy’s unbelievable. I just think Mazzulla changes their style of play, and if Simons is there, they figure it out.”

If Anfernee Simons Stays With the Celtics, a Front Office Source Says, ‘I Bet You He’s Their Leading Scorer’
After a brief discussion of how some of those changes might look as they transition from theory to real NBA life, the front office guy doubled down on Celtic Simons.
“I bet you he’s their leading scorer,” he said. “Even with Jaylen. He’s going to have the ball a lot, and that dude can really score. That offense is going to have to change to accommodate him, and, on the last year of his contract, he’s going to let it fly.
“As the kids say, he’s a bucket. He is. That dude is a bucket. He can really fill it up. And remember, he was averaging around 20 in the West. What do you think he’s going to do in the Eastern Conference, which is a LOT less competitive? How’s he not going to score and score big?”
A Trade Could Take Awhile
Be that as it may, another rival front office granted that Simons could be traded before the ink on this online story dries. But he talked up the possibility that a move could take a while.
“Anfernee Simons makes $27-plus million,” he said. “Who’s got room to put that in their cap? And he’s up after this year, so the Celtics aren’t going to want to take back anything that would load in more salary of less flexibility.
“I think, unless they are presented with some sweetheart situation, the most likely time for Simons to get moved — again, if he even does — would be at the trade deadline.
“I could see Boston being out of it and another team thinking they need a scorer like Simons to put them over the top. I could see another team that’s close wanting to add that kind of firepower down the stretch and into the playoffs. Even if it’s a rental, a team might go for him, because what we’re seeing now with the second apron and all that, if you win, it’s hard to keep a team with high-priced guys together. An expiring deal is so valuable.”
Whether it comes now or later.

Simons Advanced Offensive Stats relative to league
These numbers are completely useless
Absolutely not even remotely close to useless.
Let me rephrase that: Outside of TS%, FTr, and 3PAr, these numbers are useless
Can you explain what any of the other stats mean or how they are calculated?
You can Google them. but Portability gauges how well Simons can be dropped on a team and succeed. That’s the sort of player you want when you have a changing roster due to trades or injuries. Numbers aren’t useless, you just don’t know what they mean.
Do you know how any of those numbers are actually calculated or understand the methodology though? Just because a statistic exists doesn’t mean it has any value. Assessing basketball players’ abilities is such a subjective, inexact science that most of these advanced metrics tell you barely anything in a vacuum and the eye test holds a lot more weight.
The article indicates the Celtics need to change their style of play. Why not make it a seven-seconds-or-less style like the 2005 Phoenix Suns, but with the Celtics? Or even the Trail Blazers’ style with Terry Stotts at the helm.
It’s just one year, and it can at least provide a highly-entertaining style during this rebuilding year? There is enough personnel that can play defense to protect a lead at the end.
The 2nd best scorer by a long shot. No…….give PP 30 min a game and then we can talk. Also Derrick white in a secondary role will make strides. I like Simon’s game a lot, but it’s not “by a long shot”
PP averaged 28 MPG last year already. Those two extra minutes aren’t going to make up the 5 point difference between them. I love PP’s growth too but we don’t have to pretend that he’s more talented than Simons.
PP gets more shots cause Tatum isn’t there and either is a whole bunch of other guys he should increase his point total
I’m not pretending at all. PP is getting better every year. Simons will improve in our system, but probably get less shots.
Its his contract year though. Guys rarely get less shots when its their contract years. You usually let those guys earn a big payday
I love PP but he’s benefited significantly from the gravity of other good (all star and all pro) players around him who draw the best defenders on the opposing team and as a 6th man he’s playing against other bench players. Simons on the other hand was the best scorer on a bad team, against starters and against the other teams best defenders. Simons is a much more talented scorer than PP.
I’d like to see what Simons can do on a team with more talent where he’ll have more space and not draw other teams best defenders.
If Simons can become a neutral defender he’d be a steal for the C’s if they can resign him. His combine measurements indicates he has the physical tools to do so.
Simons: 6’3.25” (1.91m) with a 6’9.25” (2.06m) wingspan and a standing reach of 8’3.5” (2.53m). He also recorded a maximum vertical leap of 41.5 inches (105.4 cm) and a sprint time of 3.1 seconds.
White: 6’4.5” with a 6’7.5” wingspan and 190-pound weight. He also recorded a 36.5-inch max vertical leap and an 8’5.5” standing reach.
Another day, another article about Simons… come on y’all it’s the same shit as always, we’re asking around but we’re not blown away by an offer so we’re keeping him which isn’t a bad idea at all
Don’t need 700 articles to try and say the same thing over and over again
Idk I thought the actual quotes from rival execs made this interesting.
My takeaway was that maybe teams view Simons a little better than a lot of fans here who want to dump him at all costs. I think the most likely outcome is still either a trade deadline deal or no deal.
Yea yea I enjoyed the article as well but just overall picture it’s basically the same thing.
I personally would like to keep him and you can check my comment history on that lol, unless we get a serious offer like a first rounder it would just be best for us to hold onto him this year. I’d rather let him play a year here and leave for free next summer than trade him for a second round pick who probably won’t play in the NBA much.
if he does have a good year we can consider extending him at a team-friendly price as well.
I mean, what else would you have? I liked some of the deep dives about fitment with new players, but those are few and far between. Plenty of opinions on whether Celts should tank or not, we can read about Eurobasketball, how Stevens/Mazulla/JB is fucking up the team…best new content I’ve seen is Noa Danzell, plenty of people writing about the negatives, she has some decent articles that seem like they’re 30 years old (when writers occassionally expressed excitement about the team). After that, not a lot happening. Most people are expectedly disappointed with the end of the last season and the CBA that punishes GMs for putting together decent teams the hard way…no tanking, just smart trades/signings and developing your own players.
Euro basket is going to be really good tbf. Lots of good games, teams and notable faces playing. And Most if not of the games are competitive.
Right, none of this is new info.
He’s a 6’3” guard who can score but not great at defense. That makes him mid value at best for trades.
Jrue Holiday, D. White, J.B That was an absolute terror of a defensive trio. No one in their right mind thinks you can just slot in Simons and expect the same results, no matter how many 20pt games he has.
I wanna ride it out. If we can get a good trade before the deadline, do it. I would love to see Simons next to a healthy core.
2nd best scorer? aren’t we planning to bench him to become our new payton pritchard ?
he gets paid the same as our lord a savior derrick white and that’s kinda the problem
No we arent planning to bench him. That would be like cutting off our own foot.
I am confident that there gonna be a trade about him before deadline, he is a good scorer and may be helpful for the team’s bench depth. Contender teams which hope to improve their lineup flexibility may be willing to take him from Celtics.
he’s 27 million dollars of cap relief next season when Tatum comes back, seems like a good roster spot to me
I really really hope that they keep him. He is a bucket and we will need that.
I’m fine with riding with the guy. Could be a 6th man for us in 2 years?
The article sounds like he was talking to GM and said say something about Simons so I can write something
This sounds like the Celtics are behind this article to generate some interest in him.
It was PR towards Celtics fans and nothing else
Exactly what I thought as well.
I feel like he cant play for us with thus stuff leaking. He wouldn’t give a shit in the locker room
The Blazers couldn’t trade him and the Celtics are learning the same thing.
The Blazers traded him for a very good player that they targeted.
How long had they been shopping him?
Honestly, not that long.
Up until recently, it was actually the other way around. Guys like CJ were getting traded to clear up opportunities for Simons.
This isn’t a Myles Turner situation where he’s been on the table for half a decade. Portland thought Simons was the future of their franchise, and their trades often reflected that.
Dump him.
