Good point - in terms of actual Knicks intel, CP is consistently bodying Shams right now. Sure Shams will routinely break the big signings based on his quid pro quo relationships with agents etc. but he hasn’t had any juicy scoops from the team itself.

I don’t think it’s because he doesn’t get along with the Knicks FO, it’s because it’s not his thing. He “breaks” news teams want broken - really, he gets an hour head start on an official team press release.

He isn’t really a reporter and doesn’t get scoops from behind the scenes unless it’s got the blessing from teams/agents. In short, he doesn’t break news that DIDN’T happen.

If there was a current candidate to be the first female head coach in NBA history, deal with the increased scrutiny that comes with it, handle NY media, and get respect from the locker room, it would be Dawn Staley

Cool for sure, but a huge gamble on multiple levels.

I think Becky is a better X and O mind, but I don’t think her personality would mesh well as the leader of an NBA locker room. On the other hand, I think Dawn would have a much better time getting respect from the players/managing egos which is half the battle in coaching.

I mean women’s college basketball and men’s college basketball are basically different sports. There’s almost no vertical element in the women’s game and the speed of the players mean open shots are open for way longer. Thats even more magnified beteeen college and the NBA.

Agreed, college women’s basketball is a very different job than nba head coach. I think she would struggle immensely, just as Spo or any other NBA coach would struggle to match her success as a women’s college coach. Both sides would need some experience.

Jenny Boucek has also built up a solid coaching career under Rick Carlisle. Players are always praising her.

I agree. It’s definitely worth considering the many differences between men and womens basketball.

I think realistically any female coach that gets hired will be “doing it for women” whether they say it or not. That first coach no matter what will be breaking down a barrier much in the same way Becky Hammond did on the Spurs bench, so I don’t think it’s really a damning notion to acknowledge that in the open.

I was kinda sad when the Blazers didn’t hire Hammon. I really hope it was more than a publicity thing to give these women interviews, they are legit coaches

I wasnt against a Dawn Staley hiring, but I was against how absolutely unbearable and irritating I’m sure our media was about to be towards her the second we lost two in a row

Staley has known the Brunson family since before Jalen was born for decades. It wouldn’t be a flyer, it’d be a lot of the same logic of why they hired Thibs.

Edit - Staley coached at Temple in 2000 and Rick graduated in 95, not sure she knew them that far back but definitely known them for 20+ years (picture is from 04)

Current young players are much, much more likely to embrace a female coach than in the past. What about the world makes you think that younger people today are somehow more sexist than they were in say …1985?

Mike Brown won COTY with two third options. He is an excellent coach. 

Everybody point and laugh at the Knicks for interviewing one of the greatest college coaches of all time who has also been close with Jalen Brunson’s family for decades.
