Tha type of player isn’t just bad at defense they are also small, lack playmaking and ability to run a team, and their scoring is not elite enough to justify giving them all those minutes and touches

Multiple things to consider:

1. It wouldn’t be wise to extend Simons without having a clue on what he brings to the team, and how the team can best utilize him. We as fans won’t know until we see it. It’s quite possible he rides the bench a bench because he can’t play defense and Mazulla doesn’t want him on the court blowing assignments, putting our very weak center rotation into bad spots. We’ll see, but any “extend Simons” talk is premature from a fan perspective.
   
2. Simons and Sexton are still good comparisons. The Celts are actually in a worse bargaining position than Utah because they actually need the points. Utah had to give that much to trade Sexton, teams will expect they can get Simons with even more leverage in the deal.
   
3. Using All Defense is a poor representation for actual defensive ability and has little to do with contrwcts. It’s 10 out of roughly 450 players. Only 84 players were eligible for the award (Simons played 70 games last season, so he was one of the 84 eligible). The league only pays for defense when offense is attached, so contracts have nothing to do with it.
   

I would hope they let him play it out. If Sexton is his value, it’s not going down from him playing with the Celts. If he fits within the Celts system, you kick the tires on an extension. Maybe it’s worth it, maybe not. But may be worth it to see.
